Amy that was perfect! Your video has been shared on a popular radio station in New Zealand. Reason on all the kiwis commenting here within the last 24 hours :)
What she says about New Zealand pleasantries is so true! I didn't realize it fully until she explained it. We had a guy from NZ working here in the Midwest with a bunch of us Americans, and every time you saw him or he needed to consult with you about something, it wasn't just a "Hey, I've a question for you" and etc. It was, "Hey, how's it going?" And he would come about to the point of consultation so gently and sweetly that it made you feel like you were his best friend.
Thank you sooooo much for this video! I had a voice acting audition sent to me by my agent that called for a New Zealand accent. I almost passed it up, as I didn’t feel confidant. But after watching this video, it all made more sense. I went for it, sent my audition in, and very quickly received an email back from my agent saying, “Chris, good to know you can do a convincing New Zealand accent!” A thousand thank you’d for sharing your expertise and breaking it down in such a clear and concise way. 🙏🏾 Wishing you the very best!

@@Rooxie973 And as far as the nationwide thing goes, yeah it would have been about 150 years ago and there are old recordings of people who grew up during those times you can still hear today. New Zealand is about the only country that can track its accent with recordings from basically the beginning of its existance. Check this out. ua-cam.com/video/ccGgcmE0D68/v-deo.html
Hey, thanks for this! I study German and French and have taken phonetics & diction classes in both, and it's way easier now that I know IPA to distinguish between accents, but videos like this really help hone it in.
Every country has its own accent which brings an extra flavour to the language. Travelling in England, a Kiwi girl told me that the English gave her a strange look after hearing her accent. But I love the accent though I am not a Kiwi.
Starting the video in a kiwi accent was great. actually thought you could be a kiwi yourself. so refreshing to hear it done with respect and not overexaggerating.
Very impressive example of the middle register (perhaps higher) of the urban kiwi accent. Enjoyed it very much. Loved all of the little tidbits (moolk/milk, flowuh/floor, ketch'n/kitchen, 'vehnts/events).
this is probably the most accurate video of a non-Kiwi doing a kiwi accent, man I swear if people saw you around in the country people would think you were a kiwi
I'm genuinely impressed by this. I love doing accents, I'm a bit of a parrot, and my mum is Aussie, dad is a New Zealander with a very neutral accent. I've mastered a few accents, to the point where people can ask me to do a specific region of South Africa, Republic of Ireland or Northern England (I can't figure out Manchester or Newcastle though. Geordie is just incomprehensible). But even though I've got Kiwi blood in me, and I've been to New Zealand more often than anywhere else, I could never wrap my head around the accent. I always got stuck on the way the "i" becomes a "u" sound. My cousins would make fun of me if I dared to try my version of the accent, but I'd swear at them in German, which normally put a stop to that. Anyway this video, 9 years old be damned, might help me practice my NZ vocals. Thank you!
This is so true. Kiwis like to exchange niceties before they actually discuss what they are after whether it's a face to face or phone based conversation. They are very polite, generally. They would always say, "Yes, please." or let your pass car with a big smile or let you use an unconsumed parking ticket.
I don't normally watch things posted on my wall on Facebook but this certainly peaked my interest. As a Kiwi I have to say that you have nailed this as about as perfectly as you can. Well done.
spot on. not just the accent, which was very very guhd, but also the tendency towards banter before transactions. my mum does that heaps. well-observed and thanks for the hint of home.
not sure how well she did with the new zealand accent bc i'm american, but from what it sounds like she's amazing!! plus i watched her vid on american accents and she nailed mine (midwestern). i live near STL so it's a little more dialed back but the smaller cities sound JUST like her impression. impressions are a true talent!!
90% there, which is kind of incredible. little micro sounds of british/australia in there, some words abit forced (but that's super nitpicky at this point) but absolutely the best nz accent i've ever heard from a foreigner.
One thing I noticed about New Zealand, is that in Aukland, a lot of people say their i's like a really sharp "i" sound, really like and "eee" sound just shortened right down (similar to a white south african Johannesburg accent). But some accents it's more of a short "e" sound, and others it's the more typical "u" sound, like "fush and chups".
We have a pretty tough accent to imitate, but she is the best I've seen. The only area I think she misses is on the country itself! It's pronounced more like 'Nyu Zullund", I don't know any kiwi that actually says 'Zeal'. Also, she doesn't mention that all 'tu' sounds become a 'chu/chew', and 'du' becomes 'ju/jew'. Eg- 'Tha rint us jew on choose-day'
You sound great! I needed to learn an accent for theatre class, and you helped a lot! You're very pleasant to listen to, and your tips are very helpful. Thanks and great job!
Very good. I've lived in Australia and New Zealand so I can detect both accents... The way 6 is pronounced is usually a good differentiator... roughly...Australians say 'sex' while Kiwis say 'sux'
Amy, you're very impressive :-) This has to be the closest approach on UA-cam by a 'foreigner' to the 'standard' NZ accent (if there is such a thing :-) ). BTW it's fairly easy to enumerate perhaps 5 different (still-stereotypical) accents within the NZ range. If you get a chance, see if you can find videos from the 70's of 'Lynn of Tawa' (Ginette McDonald) :-)
That was absolutely bang on. I wonder if you could do the different Kiwi accents. For example although I do mostly sound like that accent, it is very much a North Island accent. Have you tried a Southland accent? We roll our 'R's heavily and it produces what I would call 'thick words' which I know sounds odd.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm a student and I have a course on different accents and varieties of English. And gosh was I lost with this one! As a foreign speaker I find English accents hard to notice/find the differences, but your videos are very helpful xx
Wow, I know this is not an original comment, but this is great! Another NZer, impressed by how good and consistent your accent is. It doesn't sound like a Wellingtonian accent to me though - more like an Auckland accent. Not sure what it is; maybe a *little* more nasal and with more uptalk than most Wellington accents. (I'm from Christchurch and it was interesting when I'd been in Wellington for a while and could suddenly hear an accent from my family down south.)
my goodness. It's impossible not to instantly adore this woman! She does completely nail the accent, but what she really gets right is the 'pleasantries'... and it is really cute... at least until you're in a hurry in a supermarket and spot the shortest checkout queue only to wait while the nanna in front of you takes 10 minutes to purchase her bottle of milk and denture adhesive, and makes the checkout girl an honorary granddaughter.
Can I just love you now Amy lol (one of the lines from my pleasantry arsenal haha joking) you really brought this accent across like you actually have it! I am born and bred in New Zealand :) living in the main city haha so surprised at how well you've brought it across! 99.9% there. Liked and subscribed, you awesome Amy you.
I lived with a Kiwi in NYC and wow, you really got not only the accent, but the tonality. I learned to tell the difference between Kiwi and Aussie bc the Kiwi will use a "short i" in place of an "e" so that the word "bed" becomes "bid" and "head" becomes "hid". Both Aussie and NZ folk seem to favor ending many statements with what sounds like a questioning tone...as in - "I live on the 5th floor? With my 3 children? So, it's hard for me to carry groceries upstairs?...."
You must know Andrew Fitz if you worked at the Regency Cinema. Small world.. you probably had served me coffee! And your New Zealand accent is real good.

Wow that's spot on! You're good as! Forwarding this to all my Canadian friends.
is that what we speak like? O.O
I think it is how we speak!!!!!
Amy, you're very impressive :-)
This has to be the closest approach on UA-cam by a 'foreigner' to the 'standard' NZ accent (if there is such a thing :-) ).
BTW it's fairly easy to enumerate perhaps 5 different (still-stereotypical) accents within the NZ range.
If you get a chance, see if you can find videos from the 70's of 'Lynn of Tawa' (Ginette McDonald) :-)
Kiwi here.. yeah you nailed it. Best none NZer NZ accent I've heard.
Your Aussie and NZ accents were both bang on. I legit thought you were kiwi first, then I thought you were Aussie when you switched! Well done!
This is pretty much the Auckland accent only haha...
It would be fun if you would do a tip video with the scouse accent (Liverpool)!
Yer I live in nz but my dads from Liverpool
I'm a kiwi, your kiwi accent is PERFECT. you fooled me! well done I'm really impressed
Can't believe you only have 575k subscribers. Forget the linguistic talent, you deserve 5M just for your gorgeous smile!😍
This is probably one of the very few New Zealand accents I've ever heard attempted correctly. Well done
Love these videos. Thanks for posting Amy. You're amazing!!
Oh my gosh, the regency lounge! I knew you looked familiar!
Have some NZ friends and family and I can pick out a kiwi accent pretty easily but I can't hit some of its core sounds for the life of me.
I am mesmerised by this.
I lived there for a year. She is brilliantly accurate. Love her green eyes
Outstanding Kiwi accent for a foreigner! I've never heard an American do it so well!
Amazing how when switching accents the whole face changes as different facial muscles are used.
I'm a NZer and I say Amy's reproduction of NZ accent/speech is indistinguishable from the genuine article. Extraordinary
I am an American and her American accent is perfect . . . cannot detect a hint of aussie. Good Work.
Braidon Benjamin She's actually American. Her Australian accent is just that good!
New Zealand. Accent. Not. Australian.
Yeah, I still get the two mixed up.
Braidon Benjamin her American should be perfect -- she's American.
The fluidity in which you switched from New Zealand to Australian to American broke my brain
You must know Andrew Fitz if you worked at the Regency Cinema. Small world.. you probably had served me coffee! And your New Zealand accent is real good.
