Soldering tips:
* Solder is important between the two conductors, but as thin as possible, since it has higher resistivity than what you're soldering. Solder around the edges, or on the outside may give you a pretty shiny surface, but doesn't help the electrons.
* A major job for the solder is to mechanically hold the parts together. Thin between the parts works here to, like adhesive. Extra thickness of solder doesn't improve the strength.
* Patience is a virtue. Both parts must be above the melting temperature of solder. Don't continue to apply extra solder to get it to flow to the edges of the pad. Wait and let the high temperature flow to the edge of the pad, and the solder that's already there will follow the heat to the edge. (Yes, it's possible to have too little solder, but that takes real skill.)
* Once both parts and the solder between them are above the solder's melting temperature all the way to the edge of the smaller part, and the parts are squeezed gently together, remove the iron, BUT DO NOT ALLOW the parts to move until the solder has had a chance to cool enough to solidify (with those big key arms this could be as much as a couple of seconds). You need something that doesn't wet to solder and that doesn't suck too much heat away to hold the parts through the cooling process. Ceramic tipped tweezers are ideal, but maybe held by a helping hand instead of yours. Not a great problem here, but SMT parts need to be held when the first pin is soldered since surface tension of solder to iron can pull an unheld part off when removing the iron. You need to hold this to keep surfaces that may not otherwise lay flat in as close contact as possible.
* Clean surfaces are import. This is most important with bare copper. Tinned copper doesn't re-oxidize anywhere near a quickly. The primary purpose of flux is to last minute remove any oxide (and maybe other dirt, but you should have cleaned already) and it is somewhat activated by heat. And don't use acid flux, is is used for plumbing. It's good to clean of any residual flux when you are done, using, for example, rubbing alcohol - though this is more of a problem with the flux in rosin core solder than when using liquid flux.
Now wave the board over you head and scream like a chicken.
My only concern, how much stress is it putting on the jack it’s plugged into and the solder joints of that jack. Otherwise looks very interesting.
I am glad to know I am not the only ham out there with more CW keys than CW ability. My people.
Globs are SO CLEAN.
I just ordered one. Thanks for shating.
And in next weeks episode we will be resolding the radio jacks from all the extra 'sideways' force applied to it... Nice idea but honestly the radio jack socket won't thank you for it after a while.
Nice to meet you this weekend at Galveston. I ordered one for me and one for my dad. 73 KF8IV
I ordered one a couple weeks ago after seeing it on NJ7V's youtube channel with the intent to use as a backup on SOTA activations. I bought mine assembled, as my soldering skills (or lack of) are sub par. I ordered some couplers from Amazon for almost nothing and I can now use it with the cord I use for my normal cw key while out on an activation. I played around with it and was impressed. It will be a great backup key and well with the money to me to have it assembled before shipping.
Great to hear! I like embarrassing myself in front of the world by showing my soldering "skills". It is a super cool key.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for putting it out there. And thanks for the morale boost when it comes to my soldering 😂
Im glad I am not the only one that collects Morse Keys while not knowing CW. 😆
They are just so cool!
@@hamradiotube hell yeah they are!
Nice................
Touch is everything, especially if you're an old duffer with essential tremor. Having to mash at a key to get it to work wears me out too quickly. Thus I use (and highly recommend) a paddle set with bearings and micrometer adjustments. (I was off the air for CW for years until I met Piero Begali. He helped me find the perfect mechanism/paddles for my shaky, stuttering paws. I can assure you that once you've tried one of Piero's keys, you'll see the difference immediately. Thanks to Piero, I'm back on the air. Not as fast or as steady as when I was a youngster in the USN but at least still on the air.) I had looked at the TinyPaddle for a SOTA/POTA kinda set up and may yet try 'em, if only 'cause the price is so, well, much lower 'n any other mechanical system. It's the slap action that slows me down, not to mention having to hold the key in one hand while using the other hand to key. When your paws shake with precision tasks, well, it ain't pretty. And as for building them, I don't think there's enough medication to allow me that charming privilege ;-) Thanks for the video & review. Stay safe & sane, amigo. 73 de W8IJN
Wait... You had the helping hands all along and you waited til the end to pull them out? 😆 This is a cool little set of paddles, but most all my radios have the key plugs on the back.
Kool, and get a male to female cable. Like the blue housing.
Nice job Mike, I ordered one. I saw it on Thomas' channel as well, but at the time I wasn't learning CW. Now I am.
Hey thats so cool! Good luck!
Get s headphone extension cable that has one female end
That'll do it.
A little lanyard and boom stylish necklace 😎
You should have plugged it into the Baofeng to see what happened. They are disposable anyway. For the female connector idea, just get a stereo 1/8" jack extension cord... will do exactly what you want there.
Nice like everything you do kid.
Just punched the buy button! Now to find a stereo extension cable on amazon to go with it.
Heck yeah man! Git you some!
@@hamradiotube guess it's time to re-learn code since I haven't touched it since they dropped the code requirement
The Long Island CW Club has been a game changer for me. In just two weeks learning so much. Hope to see you in one of their zoom meetings some time! Ive seen other UA-cam hosts in their classes....hint hint... Best, from Central Texas!
I just became a lifetime member. One day I should start taking the classes.
@@hamradiotube THIS RULES!!! They have so many classes PER DAY!! Im so happy that you became a life time member. I go to about 10 classes a week. Oh gosh, cannot wait to see you in one of the classes. The teachers are AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I just book mark the schedule, open up a google doc, and copy and paste the classes that I want to attend, and then I track which classes Ive attended. Wait till you open up the drop box, you will be like a kid in a candy store. You rock!!!!!
I'm also learning... learning... and where is the light on the end of this tunnel? 🤣
Hi Mike,
Nice emergency key. Kit seemed easy to put together. Have a Happy New Year and stay safe. 73 WJ3U
TeamReplay for the win
I also do not do code, but I can appreciate how awesome that key is. Great video mate
Ditto on the Thomas K4SWL's channel; interesting backup keyer. You should look at a qrp labs kit (QCX mini) transceiver to go with it. Happy New Year Mike from the U.K.
Sounds familiar….Saw this on Thomas’s channel, bought one, learning cw too. I bought assembled and kinda glad I did. 73 KD2LMR
UA-cam sure does make our wallets thinner doesn't it?
So cool, just ordered one. I think a headphone extension cord might suit your needs (male & female).
Awesome!
1/8" stereo coupler, used to be able to run to Radio Shack to get them but you can not order from Amazon or get at Lowe's / Home Depot most of the time. Problem solved for using it with a cord or you can also use an 1/8" plug stereo extension as that has the female on one end and the male on the other.
Yep, that'd do it.
They now have one with the female jack
OMG Mikey... you such a nut at times 😂😂😂😂👍 Happy New Year & 73 de Your Friend Uncle Guenter
I'm concerned it will wear out the jack. Shoe field use would be ok.
Remember, this is a BACK UP key.
Mike I'm sure you can buy a female too female adapters GW6BXU
Yes you can but that would double the size.
I just got a couple portable iambic paddle keyers. I dont know how to code yet either, but I am trying to learn.
You can't learn without one I wouldn't imagine.
@@hamradiotube well, I also have an MFJ-422D that runs on a 9v battery and allows me to practice without having it connected to a radio, but the reason I ordered them is because of the supply chain issues. I wanted to make sure I had them before everything fell apart and I couldn’t get them.
I got mine a week ago, have yet to try it though. I got the assembled one btw.
Awesome, get it on the air. I'll expect a full report in the morning.
@@hamradiotube hahaha wilco
If that's all your key's/paddles, then I have more... And I ALSO don't do CW yet...
I would like to make your problem my gain :-) I'm just getting started and have one of the stainless magnetic amazon units. What are your thoughts about that vs a bencher or kent? I would like to stay with iambic. Major feel difference or anything. Thanks in advance and great vid. 73.
This is a cool video I have never seen a key that small. I think collecting CW keys is awesome because that’s a lot of history there. I have an old Viber Plex bug and I think it’s around in the 1940s. I have a lot of respect For CW operators, to watch them operate to me it is poetry in motion. Thanks for the video and that’s awesome little key. Take care Mike have a great tomorrow.

Steve
Exactly. I love my J38 because of that. So much history with those little keys. It's awesome. Thanks for stopping by. Now you have another key to buy.
I realise you said this is a back up key, however, one thing that puts me off is you are putting strain on your radios key connector, which could lead to early failure. How easy would it be to make a small flying lead with plug and socket on you could even glue the socket onto a heavy base. I think that would then protect your radio.
Just an observation, hope you dont mind me posting. 73 Mark G0NMY
Very cool! Definitely worth the extra $5 to get a built one vs the aggravation, screaming and cursing when I'd be trying to build it.
I still think it's fun to build it myself. It actually turned out great. I'm really happy with it.
@@hamradiotube I do need to find a way to practice soldering without worrying about completely ruining something. After some practice I might be more confident to try again. (You should have seem my Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W * the header pins I TRIED to solder. Luckily I had help getting it fixed.)
Its so crazy simple to build. Screaming, cursing? HA!
Where can I find a small keyer like this???????
n6ara.com
Looks like it could mess up the plug on the radio with repeated use.
Well it's designed as a back up paddle so repeated use is beyond the scope of its intended purpose.
I love it. Please do not attempt the MARS mod on your 705 with current skill level of “soldering”
Hahaha! Don't worry I'm not going inside of that one.
Why all the PREMIERE stuff? Lose that habit and Just roll it when it ready. The PREMIERE alerts are (for me anyway) irrigating and clutter my feed. Thx for the vids es 73!
I agree. I build a play list every day or so when I have the time. Then you're watching videos and it comes to a stop and you gotta frig around to get to the next video.. UA-cam had an error that seems to be fixed now, but the only way to bypass these was to page back delete the Premiere then go to the next. I truthfully dislike and ignore a lot of the,. Half the hams on UA-cam seem to be doing it now.
So you're saying you have alerts to let you know when new videos are being released to UA-cam, then complain that you're getting too many alerts? Why not just turn off the alerts?
The reason for the premier is to align with other ham radio UA-cam creators so we can have a set of videos to watch.
There's many reasons other than just that's what I want to do with my channel. Mostly because there is a live chat during the premier that allows for interaction with everyone viewing. It helps grow the community and answer questions live. Thanks for watching though. I appreciate you being here.
C'mon DUDE! You cannot alcohol clean a contact and then put your oily finger back on it. Clean it again!
And, be stingy with the flux. Otherwise, you'll have a messy cleanup on the PCB after done.
It is too big.
