The good news is that eventually Joey will have bought all the PS5s and honestly detailed what is wrong with them so none of us get scammed by dishonest sellers. Doing God's work.
😂😂😂 exactly!
If uart works, the Southbridge is fine.
£170 for a broken ps5 is nuts, I've bought a working one for less than that....
where u finding one for less than that 😭
Broken shit is ridiculously expensive these days. Used to be able to make some money from it or score yourself a bargain if you could get it fixed. Now shits.kore expensive when it doesn't work or if you're lucky you save £50 after spending 3 hours fixing it.
I mean, there’s no way you find a working PS5 digital edition for less than £200. If your PS5 breaks, it’s out of warranty and you keep the warranty sticker intact it values more money than one with already attempted fix. You can ask maybe £170~200 for a broken one with intact seal. Maybe £100~140 if it’s attempted repair. This is my thought.
@@Moothead2 sometimes you still find good deals I bought 2 ps5 controllers with stick drift for $45
Ya full of crap 😂
Are you for hire? I will pay you double of what you've made for the what? 70x5 hours you've spend recording these videos? So £171,40 .... you know what - I'm a generous man: £350 for 350 hours. That's a whole lot more than what you usually make doing this!
(Yes - it's a joke - step down white knights - he ain't no damsel in distress! 😀)
I really think you should move away from the PS5s... They are seriously just pieces of crap! Sony has all these components running at their very limits - since that's the only explanation for those insanely high failure rates.
Ok so normally I'm against this kinda thing - but really it's INSANE how many PS5 consoles I see bricked and how little Sony cares! It WAY too often seems to be "just out of warranty" consoles - and when you then open them up it's simply just component failings - since Sony is pushing the hardware WAY too hard to - I'm guessing - compete with the Xbox Series X. The difference is - IMO -the better cooling in the Serie X here! So - here is my "don't do this you naughty so and so" thing. If the warranty sticker is intact, then buy one of the "official resale" consoles, take it home, exchange the side panels if there are too many scuffs on the one you have which doesn't boot - and then stick that one in the box and return it. DO NOT buy a new one and then try and pass that on as a new one - or at least wait a few months. It's VERY easy to see if a PS5 is used because of the shitty quality of the plastics - especially the "shiny black middle piece".
- Frankly with the way Sony has been behaving ever since they started F-ing over consumers with their "Everquest Next/Landmark" hoax - and how they increasingly continue to be insanely anti consumer (latest with Helldivers 2) - and the fact that they seem to not give a flying F about the insanely high failure rates on "out of warranty" PS5s - you know what - I REALLY don't have an issue with people doing this! They are literally the most anti consumer corp there is these days - and they seem content giving the middle finger to the people who buy their stuff - so - go ahead - return the favor!
I'm gonna be really honest here. The PS5 content is starting to get a bit monotonous now.
Time to broaden you're expertise. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for your honesty, but I can’t imagine PS5’s going anywhere soon on the channel as I enjoy fixing them 😊
Is it just me or is it so satisfying when watching Joey reball a chip.
He could reball my chips tbh
Joey good tip to help you find short-circuits. Power each rail and measure the "current" drawn on each rail, compare the current draw with a known good board.if you have slightly higher current draw on say the 1.3 volt rail then you know it's a RAM issue, if the current is higher on the 5 volt rail then maybe it's the Wi-Fi module etc, if the current drawn is less on any of the rails this could indicates an open circuit somewhere. This will help you to isolate open and short-circuits.
Love this, thank you for the tip. I just have to get myself a working board and not be tempted to steal the parts :D
@@JoeyDoesTech I just updated my comment and added the following : if the current drawn is less on any of the rails this could indicates an open circuit somewhere.
I would stop buying ps5's they are rubbish and very poorly built
Ill still be watching when we get to episode 700 Joey😂
Fir the second one, that is an AI description. eBay has now brought in the ability for sellers to use AI-powered descriptions where it literally grabs everything from the title and AI specifics, and makes a description based off that. I can tell these from a mile away.
Very annoying! Thanks for the heads up 😂
The awful AI generated eBay descriptions are the worst. Yes I know the platform is PlayStation 5, force the seller to describe the actual product.
Agreed!
Joey, do you happen to know what enables the 3.3V line? I have no 3.3 or 1.8. Would the voltage regulator above F7002 still supply 3.3V with a faulty or no encoder, or should that 3.3 be always hot?
Why are there so many broken PS5’s. How common is an APU failure or a chip failure because it seems on this channel it happens a lot. Also what are some things you can do to pervent such failures????
I feel like the PS5 is made poorly. Seems like major components fail instead of lesser components
At this point the series needs to be called "Trying to fix PS5's." Also.. What evidence do you have that the Southbridge even fails often? Almost every one you've replaced still doesn't work, indicating the SB isn't the issue. Perhaps you jump to the SB way too soon?
I'm still catching up with the really interesting series but I often feel frustrated - while DC checks on any circuit board will tell you some things (although resistance mode has been known to blow some chips, depending on the DC voltage applied by the meter), they're only telling you what is across a particular net. More importantly, they give you no idea of what's going on inside the chips - they're only testing chip internal nets that are exposed. A 'scope may tell you a little bit more, but when I saw that the HDMI was being recognised by your monitor, yet there was no video, I immediately thought "something's wrong on the chip logic somewhere".
I also puzzle why a chip/crack on the corners of the APU always seems to indicate a broken chip.
Watching Joey poke his face with those grimy gloves... My skin would break out so badly!
Its crazy how big you’ve gotten.. keep ip the amazing work joey! Your videos are a must watch weekly!!!
We're only just getting started! Thanks for watching :)
Just for our entertainment, could you try removing an APU from a donor board?
I really like the honesty in the title: "Trying to fix broken items". Not "Fixing" but "trying".
Have to be truthful!
Do you repair Motherboards?
I have an Asus Crosshair viii Hero, it needs a new AM4 Socket..
As soon as you mentioned that your monitor behaves differently but still says no signal, my first suspicion was that IC - it has to mean there is some sort of signal going through, but too mangled/incomplete to display anything. So if there are no shorts and voltages are fine, either that chip is dead or the actual graphics part of the source of that signal (APU?) is dead
Hey Joey. Just noted at 23:05 when you were checking over the diodes. On the second diode. Your probe actually slipped under the diode and looked like it was raised up and off center. I don’t think it was fully soldered down? Cheers!
Do you have a broken one with working APU so you could attempt an APU change?
That south bridge balling was just 😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you 😁😁
Hi, maybe my question is a little silly, but why don't you try to change the APU, isn't it gripped the same way as the north and south bridges 🤔🙂.
I replaced a laptops thermal paste and cracked the cpu in the corner, it still works but freezes frequently so I figured it probably is the cpu that I damaged😂
Very unlucky with the first one, but the second one was a hell of a chase on something you can't see. Nice one!
Excited for when you get past all these ps5s. I am a little tired of seeing them.
Great video as usual. However the channel is Joey does Tech, not Joey does PS5's. Can you look at other tech, retro handheld games, older consoles etc.
I wonder if you could have caught this by looking at the signals with an oscilloscope. If the port was vga then I would expect something to be wrong with vsync or hsync, with those symptoms.
I have the mako ifixit kit and it is absolutely fantastic. Had it for a couple years now.
You should add low melt when cleaning the solder balls from the old SB. Makes using the wick easier and less risk of damaging the pads/coating. Saw the technique on PCB Solder channel... a German technician.
I wonder if those who buy your faulty ones also have YT channels ....
I like your channel, but please rename it to Joey does PS5 😄
that little chip on that APU is nothing. core itself is way deeper.
Excellent video m8.... so from now on even if the diode readings say yes... the encoder still may have blown lol
How strange that you found good measurements around the retimer chip although the problem was eventually caused by the chip itself.
I know! Doesn’t really make sense to be honest, but I’m not going to argue! I don’t think I measured all aspects of the chip, so assuming something went wrong somewhere :)
Genuine question. how come you need the stencil to apply the solder balls when it looked just as good when you applied the solder with the iron ? cant u jst use the iron to put the solder on it so you dnt have to use a stencil or solder balls?
Great question. The solder with the iron isn’t thick enough. Whilst it looks even, it’s not got enough depth to sit on the pads on the board. Sometimes if the board is a tiny bit uneven or warped, the contacts won’t correctly align :)
Electrical design engineer here. First off you channel is very entertaining. It's fun for me to see the perspective of a repair technician on consumer electronics! Just going to clear up a misconception that I heard @15:35, uncleaned flux on the board is not going to interfere with a BGA chip assuming that you reballed it properly and got it into position. The whole purpose of the flux is to lower the surface tension of the solder and protect it from oxidation while it is molton. It is good practise to clean it out though as a lot of low quality flux is corrosive and will cause problems over time if left in contact with the solder.
I have designed a lot of electronics over the years so if you want the perspective of the industrial side of things ask away and I will answer if I am able.
Also my two cents on liquid damage is you should probably be replacing more of the thin film resistors that show signs of corrosion as they are very, very susceptible to that sort of thing and a single one of them at too high of a resistance could cause a chip not to turn on properly, especially if connected to an enable pin. Ceramic capacitors are much more resilient as the outside of them is coated so they don't tend to fail in the same way.
Also pro tip there are some easily cleanable flux vapor devices that will aid in your thermal camera searches of the board as they minimize the reflections in IR and are easily cleaned with a IPA swab. Not useful in every case but especially if you have a very reflective board it could make a big difference. The flux tends to melt in the hot regions too on its own so sometimes there is no thermal camera needed even.
When you do the reballing bit, would heating the chip from the underside with a heat plate work as an alternative to hot air? Or would it cook the chip? Thanks for great content, Joey!
It deffo would! I just don't have the tools yet :) Thanks for watching!
You should Try fixing gpus
Idk when you change your channel's banner but I think its really cool 👍
Thankyou!
Just come across your channel Joey. Great content.
It’s beyond me to try any of this stuff, but it’s still interesting to see how you manage to bring some of this ‘junk’ back to life. Keep the winning streak going! 👍🏻🏦
I was screaming retimer at the screen for so long 😂. You checked the port and everything was good. You usually say when there's no shorts, it could be an internal short on the IC so that's what made me go retimer
RETIMER! nice one Joey!!
Hello! After long consideration, I have finally pulled the trigger for the Manta Precision Bit Set, which with the 10% off code became a bit more accessible for me. Went for the big set, as it had a couple of bits that the Pro Tech Toolkit did not have. Waiting for the delivery now! I'm so happy for the future, not needing to buy entire sets for one bit that i need
I don't know why people keep assuming that a corner missing off a heat spreader is a cracked APU. Definitely never the case. Unless there's actually a crack through the silicon or substrate..
Very happy for you that you were able to get the second PS five up and running! I have a PlayStation five at home launch model that has the exact same issue. Everything checks out OK and I get no display. I’m going to check the retimer and maybe possibly just blindly replace it and hope to have the same result!
joey im not a technician or anything like that but i can spot a bridge and a loose connection when i see one lol - when u first showed that HDMI re-timer (i think you called it, the Panasonic 739 chip) at 26:59 u can see 2 loose connections in the lower left and a possible bridge in the upper left - swapping it out might have been unnecessary but great job getting the fix !
CHAAAAAAATTTT!!!!
One thing I draw from all of this is not to own a PS5 at all, ever... I see so many times just how janky and junky these expensive machines are and Sony know full well their product is bogus and it surprises me not that their machines do seem to expire rather rapidly once warranty is over like there is a little chip in there that overjuices certain lines and bingo bango your 5 goes up in smoke and you gotta buy a new one or pay extortionate amount for after warranty repairs to them...
why only ps5?
ALL the PS5s!
Hey Joey, corner cracking on the APU is mostly related to fall damage bud.
Edit: the second one, I'd always go for the hdmi encoder even if they show good readings. They're tricky tbh. The last option is port replacement. Great fix though!
Appreciate the comment pal, thank you as always :)
If only it came for sale on Ebay :/
It did! and it went really fast :)
I like seeing how it’s fixed and different issues. Saying that, this shows that you shouldn’t base a business of repairing faulty stuff from eBay unless you are super picky.
Correct! Completely agree.
When in doubt, change it out? I think you have gremlins in your shop. Great Repair and Video! I'm sure we were all hoping for 2 for 2. Better luck next time! Thank You. 😀
Thanks Ajaks!
With the power of iFixit it will be repaired.
Perfect! Thx for u Vid.
No giveaway link in dicord
Moral of the story is, there is no money to be made doing this lol. Entertaining none the less.
TRUE! Unless you scour the internet and IRL for REALLY low prices, then there's a chance >.
Not another ps5😒
FIRST? Yes. Im weird.
Thanks Darksy ❤️
How much do you usually make a month doing this?
I doubt he makes much actually fixing the consoles. He makes all his money from the channel. He's said he makes as much as he was working full-time at a repair shop
@@thadofalltradesi guess it depends on the products and what are the easiest to fix and buy cheap.
Joey, i like the content you provide. I really do. But please, stop with the click baiting on the titles. You do not fix faulty "items" or "electronics" (well, you do. But it's misleading) instead write what you actually do. You fix faulty consoles. Nevertheless, keep up the good job and thank you for the content. I am glad for your success and i wish you even more success in the future.
This series isn’t exclusive to consoles, that’s just one of the most common items he buys. Item and electronics are both words used to describe console anyhow
@@samsheehan7914 Hey Sam. I know where you are coming from and I don't disagree with you at all. What i mean is, instead of writing "I BOUGHT 9 ITEMS FROM EBAY, CAN I FIX THEM?" (It's just an example) "I BOUGHT 9 PS5'S FROM EBAY, CAN I FIX THEM?" I think it would actually be beneficial for Joey in terms of searching UA-cam and views (I think people search for ps5 fix, xbox fix etc mote than they do fix items). But then again, he knows UA-cam better than me. This is no hate comment against him. He's a great guy. With very good knowledge when it comes to fixing consoles. I've learned a bit from him also. Hopefully he doesn't take it in a negative way and keeps growing his channel.
I appreciate the honesty and feedback dflexi! These titles generally do better for the channel. I don't feel like they're misleading as the items I'm attempting to repair are electronic items 😊 I find that if I put "Items" or "Electronics" the videos perform better, and personally I don't feel like they're clickbait. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the videos 😊
@@JoeyDoesTech Hey Joey, Then you keep doing what you're doing. Best of luck to you and the family ✌🏼
