Never seen anyone play an 8 string so badly before this was very entertaining
The best way to play extended range instruments is by not just going low because the instrument goes low!,,, but by including the lows as accentuating parts of your music! That said, it can do atmospheric awesomeness at will, and is far more useful than just a metal instrument! Also, the lows work much better through digital, over standard guitar amp/speaker options!
I dont care what anyone says, 8 strings are cool. You guys are clearly great musicians, but it wasn't made for the music you play, as you've said. If you know how to use them, they're really cool.
It was a fun video, its great to see other players work with products that are out of their realm. Too often on YT, it seems like everyone is an expert on everything..and thats not the case for most players.
I decided to give a headless 8 string, fan-fret, Multi Scale electric guitar a try.... and I LOVE it! There is so much about it, that I had originally felt, was so "wrong" about it.... I was shocked when it proved itself to be ultra versatile. I mainly use it for Ambient Guitar... NOT Metal! I am now rarely grabbing my old trustworthy baritone guitars since this has arrived. It's like having the baritone attached to a regular 6 string!!!!!
most people don't use the high notes but look at people like Tosin Abasi who absolutely shred on an 8 string
Oh my God first comment you’ve totally inspired me to get a new electric guitar and practice really hard. Thank you.❤ do you have any recommendations of what electric guitar should get?
Hey! welcome! Wow that depends on what you want to spend and what sort of music you want to play. Maybe the Ibanez AZES range would suit you?
Yaaa I’d be in the same boat of not knowing what to do with this guitar. A guitar that can do everything maybe means less guitars you have to switch between songs? I’m guessing?
Kudos to you both for giving that insane thing a go. Best I could do would be to play it like a bass. Emily's surf rock was hilarious. Very fun video folks love it!!! If you have an 8 string, you should find yourself a Baena
riff section, ambient section, done!
I’m betting Banea would have cracked up watching you two fumble with that monster. I really should wait till the end to comment 😂
Have you ever tried an acoustic guitar with an extra low B string and a high d string?
I could see this guitar being used for a looping pedal. You have you're bass doing a line, and then just play it like a normal guitar. Could be fun.
I’m not sure I’d want one of those but, as is the case with a baritone guitar, you’d get a far better sound through a full range amp, guitar amps can’t process the low tones.
Maybe you can switch between a baritone and standard tenor mid riff by eiðer playing ðe top 6 strings or bottom 6 strings depending on what you’re playing. It would make a great key change option.
The thing about 8 Strings is, that you have to setup the EQ and amp to adjust to the fatness. An 808 also helps. Otherwise it will sound like anus. And 27" is too flabby for anything under Drop A, considerung using the factory string gauges.
Nothing is easy for a beginner and as a smart one you don't initially buy an expensive sophisticated instrument.
Now you need to have a lesson from Tosin or Javier from Animals As Leaders and you might yet change your mind. That would be a fun video!
Hahahah I loved this vid.! : D Btw there is no other guitar that would fit on your hand than this Andy!
A great episode! Lots of fun, and definitely informative. I’m really not a fan of the 8-string guitars that I have seen, though I have never played one. As Austin Powers is prone to saying, “That sort of thing’s just not my bag, baby!” 🤷🏻♂️
As someone who has played THAT guitar every day for a year. It does it all, you can get some amazing crunch tone out of it on voice 2 with the neck pickup and the passive? Idk I flip switches till I like it lol. It’s my favorite guitar I’ve ever played
To me it's better to have an 8 string at Drop E as you can easily play more open chords and accentuate solos easier with another Low E at the top. Makes the brain remember the lowest string is just another E a lot easier, as well.
Literally could mod that to use the regular 6 strings to enable far more space between the strings although a 7 string would probably be better in that regard.
Played Scarlatti and lute stuff on a nylon 8 string. I always play a 6 string electric. It's fun to have a bass player do throw low punches and make strings sing in a low register. Charlie Hunter is amazing: I aspire to have a low percent of his musicianship and technical prowess. I'd like to hear him on a 6 string with an upright bassist, though. In metal ensembles, I just don't get it: coordination between a drummer, and 6 and 4 stringers can be plenty heavy. But I am sub mental.
Well, we all had a good bit of fun, and now over to Henning for the weather forecast...
Since 2023 seems to have been the years of 'Learning to play left handed' . You should make 2024 the year of learning 8 strings. Blast out some cream riffs on it
Hahaaaa this was delightful 🤣 also....Ibanezezezezez ! The size of this guitar fits you Andy 🤪
I came to accept that I'm one of those that just doesn't get it either. I will get down on a 7 if it's required (Deftones, Korn, etc) but anything beyond that just hand me a bass.
As a fan of metal, I am NOT a fan of 8 string guitars. Some of my favorite bands use 8 strings, and that's cool. (E.g.: Meshuggah.) But I think having that 8th string is just silly for most bands. And I don't think we need an 8th (or even a 9th) string.
I own (and very much of a fan of) a 7 string guitar. I have a Schetcher Demon-7. But when you get down to 8 and 9 string guitars, you end up being in the same audio range as a bass.
Emily's opening riffs sounded a lot like Johnny Cash! I love Johnny Cash! That guitar is made for country (Johnny Cash style) I have never been enticed by 7 or 8 string guitars, But after listening to Emily play, I am having second thoughts! Andy... You need more practice on that thing!
Haha, thank you! I figured that riff rules on baritones, so why not this thing?
Entertaining video :D from my view, it would be informative to hear from somebody that feels an 8-string guitar is a very good and useful thing and show us why. Not that I'd be convinced, but I'm not helped much by seeing people who saying the same thing that I'm thinking which is "WTF"?
If anything proved how pointless an 8 string guitar is this video has nailed it.
Your speakers wouldn't last long i could hear them breaking up!
In the right (Very Large) hands i am sure it can sound good, some of the clean tones were good
but for most players it is just too much.
I have a 7 string Schecter but rarely play it, i struggle to reach to 7th string!
6 Strings are enough for most players.
Why?
I love this review. Not every product is spectacular. This guitar sounds terrible. But I enjoyed spending time with you all!
having played one of these in person with the right amp it sounds good, well i mean it sounds good if you like the kinda music its made for haha.
It doesn't sound terrible, they are not the target audience as Andy said.
There is a different technique to it. It's not the guitar, it's them being unfamiliar
please do not allow bad playing and bad tone effect your opinion of an instrument.
If I had one, I'd string it ADGCFADG, with the high G being an .007 octave G string from a 12-string set.
You might have a hard time tuning to double drop A on this scale length.
The Meshuggah ibanez custom could probably hold tension that low but at 27.5in at the high end of the multiscale youre asking for all the flop
You gotta Djent dude.
Now *this* is what I call guitar content! Brilliant 🤣
Oo I have watched the P&P theme song just months ago, but wasn't realising it was a Gibson ES-335. Oh no wait!!! It's a semi-hollow red Ibanez! :D
achilles heel of extended range electrics is the pickups. they never seem to sound right.
Damn it Andy... You are the only bloke I have seen who makes an 8 string monstrosity look SMALL! 🤣
The one person on this planet 8 strings makes sense is Tosin Abasi.. slapping and shredding at the same time.
I think you pretty much have to be a crazy virtuoso such as Abasi to get the full use out of an 8 string. Just using it for chugging is kind of pointless, just use a bass. A bass is not a sacred instrument that must only be played with a clean tone using your fingerpads. You can use a pick and distortion, and from what I’ve seen with people doing it on UA-cam it sounds better than an 8 or 9 string anyway.
Fun Video Andy. I guess the same would happen if you handover this guitar to me 🤣
Love Pete and Pete!
Emily playing rockabilly licks on an 8 string is the funniest thing
where is Dean Lamb when he's needed
I really only need a 4 string guitar.
maybe get a better tone first
Seven strings overwhelmed me so I am not going to throw any stones :)
Never heard an 8 string guitar sound good!
You could start a Duane Eddy tribute act.
I think I better stick with continuing to learn to play with 6.......
I believe these are specifically targeted toward the DOOM players,
I could be wrong as i dont know a lot about the market or genre really,
I just know ive only ever seen these types of guitars played by DOOM players in videos,
That guitar is for when you are going to play live immediately after you fire the bsss player for your band. Or your bass player sucks and you turn down his amp at the beginning of the set and you cover the songs for him during the set with your 8 string guitar. Then after the set is over, he brags about how great he played the set! Of course, I am not good enough to do any of that. I get confused with 6 strings.🤣🤣🤣
What is the link to Emilys channell??????
Yeah I don't think I want one of those anymore... 7 it is..
i have two guitars tuned down to drop F#… they’re both 6 strings hahaha
Regular guitar players trying to figure out how to make a setup on 8 string xD
This is what i was looking for......definitely in the right place!!!
I play 8 string bcrich - if you don’t like it or want it send it to me - I will love it. !!!!!!!!!!
I think the fact we have 6 string guitars but only reason fingers is weird
Did Baena leave his guitar there lol
A month later. I was pleasantly surprised and upset at myself I didn’t just watch the full video
Listen to deftones, they use a lot of detuning and it gives the music a very gloomy spooky effect.
Wow! That was fun! My brain hurt looking at that beautiful guitar, too. Emily did well. Andy was like I'd be--shut down, unless there was a slide around, then I would try making some horrific slide guitar noises. Emily is the only person I've ever seen play the Pete and Pete theme song (Hey Sandy by Polaris). The first time I saw her play it, she played a tiny snippet, and I just about fell off of my chair--I recognized it immediately. Thinking about it though, she's about the same age as my daughters, and my girls and I would watch Pete and Pete together.
Everyone plays metal on these…I’d like to hear more jazz, post rock, even roots music.
a lot of the metal played on these are very jazz influenced. look up covers of meshuggah songs.
Okay, so an 8-string is an overcomplicated Bass VI that doesn't sound as good. It all makes sense now!
no they just have bad tone and bad playing lol. at least for what would be played on an 8 string normally.
I found something that interests me less than a baritone! 😃
actually i would love a baritone for a few specific textures and things haha. but this... uhhh no thanks.
send it to me instead lmfao I use 8's exclusively
I've been thinking about a 7-string multiscale lately, but I'm not even remotely intrigued by 8-string. It's a lot to do with non-long fingers, too. I don't think I'm built for it.
Hahaha loved this video so honest guys
If you guys hate it, ill gladly take it off your hands 😝
Lol!😂 I have enough challenge on six string.
Hahaha, now I definitely do not want a 8 string
Watching non-metal guitarists struggle with a guitar designed for metal musicians who resent the fact they need a bass player is very amusing.
I mean I struggle with a 6th string lol
Yeah, no doubt! Like Keith Richards says "five strings, three fingers, one asshole" :D Rock on!
Any guitar with more than 6 strings is pure evil and against the order of nature! ;) (except for 12-strings, of course)
... hey, if you don't want it, you can give it to me, I'll be happy to take it away!
8 strings are weird, but nothing compared with those flutes that austral aborigens insist to blow in; why do they need them so looong?
not a fan of 8 strings. seems silly and some marketing guru created an answer to a problem they created. I think they should just be a new instrument.. maybe that's just my old-age-conservatism coming in lol.. Anyway fun silly video of a fun silly instrument.
Lol when you have all the guitars and a fat wallet full of extra money.. sure...
That guitar sounds absolutely horrible; not sure why they made it!
It sounds like a great guitar for the indie busker who wants to cater to a wide audience.
I want 3 of those. 1 to familiarize, 1 to frankenize, 1 to finalize.
I wonder if it was ftretless on a metal "fret" board....
Personally I stay away from guitars with more than 6 strings
Why would you make a video about a guitar you know nothing about?
That’s the equivalent of asking grandma who drives a Toyota Carola to make a review video about an F1 car.
"Just use a second guitar". Or how about not?
I would call this episode of guitar geek .. guitar from another earth 😁.. because that was like wow .. eight string quitar 😊
Definitly one of the guitar videos of all time, 69/10
This was entertaining. Country music sucks.
Not only do they looks terrible but people play crappy music on them and 7 strings.
Just play the damn piano :)
A positively awful instrument. Good luck to you folks that like it but I will give it a miss thanks. ahahaha. :D.
I'll just be diplomatic and say, it's not for me.
Why does that surfboard have strings on it?
😂😂😂😂
