    What a sublimely elegant dancer she was. Wonderful performance.

    I saw her at SAB when I was there in ‘73. She wasn’t in NYCB yet. She & a friend were doing some casual practicing in an empty studio & she was doing these beautiful grand jetes across the floor. I was amazed - had never seen them done so beautifully.

      I’m sure she was in the company by then because I left in 1974 and could have sworn she was already there. I could be wrong.

      John Clifford I was relying on someone else’s comment that she joined in 1974, so I was assuming she was still at SAB. 😊

      I actually found this when I Googled her: a bio from ABT’s website, as she was staging “Mozartiana” for them. 😊 www.abt.org/people/maria-calegari/ American Ballet Theatre - Maria Calegari

      At any rate, she was a huge presence there in summer of ‘73, a promising top of the roster at SAB - it was clear she was going into the company.

    Wow, you can really see why and how each of these steps was crafted for Suzanne, and by Suzanne. I admired Maria greatly before; now even more so! I always learn a lot from the videos you post - thank you so much.

      Catherine Carter Actually this was created on Diana Adams. Diana couldn't do the premiere so Melissa Hayden did.

    I can't see the video because of a commercial covering half the screen.

    Thank you for this. Is it from the early 90s? Calegari was always a favorite and she's wonderful here. I saw her many times but never as Titania. There's not much of her on youtube but it's a great gift that you've posted the whole ballet!

      I've always thought Maria Calegari was an especially fascinating ballerina. I think she came into the company around 1974. Of the ballerinas who came along around the time that Balanchine passed away, I've always wondered what Maria Calgari and Stephanie Saland's careers would've looked like had he lived a a few more years. Of course, there were probably others who might've started to receive prominent roles and might've been more popular, but they always made me wonder. Beautiful dancers.

      I mean that's the year of this video -- 1974 was the year Calegari came out of SAB. She was a true ballerina, with all those qualities mentioned above -- musicality, technique, mystique -- wonderful in many roles.

      Thanks for giving us the date. I saw her in the 80s and 90s. She was everything you've described! I was once introduced to her by an NYCB dancer friend. Her aura and her beauty were so startling that I could barely take my eyes off her through a dinner.

    Mr Clifford, OMG, you've posted some PHENOMENAL vids here, & thank God the Bal Trust hasn't gotten snarky about them. Could you possibly post SUZANNE FARRELL: ELUSIVE MUSE (film), and also DANCING FOR MR B?
    WOW!!!

      Iain Davies-Hayle As long as the film has previously been broadcast it's OK. Aren't those other two films on UA-cam somewhere?

    Maria is wonderful ,,looks like farell..Oberon is awful looking..stocky peasant like ...give me snthony dowelll p,easeeee

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  7 років тому +3

      You've completely misunderstood the roles here. The man in green is NOT "Oberon." He is her "Cavalier," and "Oberon" appears in different scenes as per Shakespeare's description. They are not lovers or "partners." They represent two elements of nature, Spring and Winter. You must be used to the Ashton version where he presents them together and they do a Pas De Deux. Balanchine chose to follow Shakespeare.

    • @michelboudot2882

      John Clifford sorry was thinking Ashton version ..where Oberon is so beautiful.....who is that boy. Is it jack sotto...

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  7 років тому +4

      Michel Boudot Yes. It's Jock who was a superlative partner. Balanchine never intended that role to be anything more. Look at the complete ballet I posted.

      Hate the "peasant" language. Misses the point. He might fulfill whatever image of a "peasant" you think exists, but try to go deeper. He's quite clearly a cavalier. Even if he wasn't...eff the peasant bulls*t.
