The Streets Have Changed: A NYC Bicycle Journey During the Coronavirus
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лип 2024
- I hadn't been on my bicycle in over a week, choosing to walk and run for exercise during the Coronavirus (and observing recommended precautions) but I was curious what my normal commute looked like. So on Friday I chose to get my exercise by bicycling in to Manhattan and brought my camera along as I visited many spots I might typically do if scouting for great locales to film footage for a Streetfilm.
The amazing thing is I have so much archives of New York City that in many cases I had exact matching footage from the last few years of each location or spot, showing what it looks like typically (or in some cases showing what it looked like before the streets received an intervention from NYC DOT) and in some cases is pretty mind blowing.
I hope this Streetfilm (likely the final "new" one shot until the world heals) is entertaining, gives you hope and stretches your mind to what is still possible when we emerge from this pandemic.
With factories, planes and cars idled, this should be the cleanest air we've had in a long time.
It is!
That’s the truth lol.
China had the Lowest C02 emission in a long time
@@arnold1112 You realize this was 12 days ago when doctors in NYC were telling us that masks are useless? Of course now they tell us the opposite.
@@StreetfilmsCommunity that was such terrible advice. I honestly think they told people that cause they knew there may be a shortage. Level 3 masks most certainly do help block bodily fluid. As long as you remove the mask properly it helps a lot.
"I hope people can look back on this as a sort of historical document."
Me too bro, me too...
if you are alive. no one knows.
Sure but where is the documentation of the hospitals and their overwhelming numbers.
I hope we all learn something that will benefit everyone ?lol
You now every now and then you come across something like this that will be used to teach people what happened here in the city. Thank you for your work!
Yea exactly. It's going to show that thousands of people died because idiots like this couldn't stay home for a few weeks.
Previously on The Walking Dead
that's fucked but it's so funny lol.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
@Bruce strkland I was just comparing the empty streets to the show.
@@savage4312 It is funny! 😊
Even in dark times, you have to keep humor up!
As long as it is not personal or insulting, keep the jokes coming!
English joke:
Crime was committed.
Police could not identify the suspects, because they were wearing full PPE.
They could however exclude all NHS workers! 😂
That was an awesome take of NYC at this point in time. Great Job and thanks for sharing.
Im lovin it. I wish the city was like this all the time.
ME TOO
Be careful what you wish for lol
I was around 9/11 the city is Already passing the number of deaths from that time. I felt the loss. If we keep having ppl die, it may very well stay like this
So eerie, like they're preparing to film some Apocalyptic movie. I loved the comparison shots. Thanks for posting this.
I hope that everyone are doing well in difficult these days. Stay strong and healthy. And Be carefull at all times.
And wash your hands regularly.
see you guys in 10 years when this is in my recommened and will be an adult
Bold of you to assume you'll survive the apocalypse
Maybe he thinks Will Smith in I Am Legend :p
Jonathan Low because it’s an apocalypse. Okay bud.
assuming you survive what't coming, this is just the beginning.
You want make it.
love streetfilms and thanks
Thank you for this. I was a bike messenger there in the early '90s. The only similar circumstance/memory I can think of is when there was a crazy winter storm in winter of '95-ish and they closed Manhattan to all vehicles except emergency personnel. Of course - on the subways and commuter rails we were packed in like sardines (no 6 feet apart rules that week!).
I've been filming private vids all over Manhattan on bikes a few days a week in order to "never forget"... Good job on compare and contrasting older shots. Nicely done!
Great job. Cyclists around the world like me (Australia) appreciate your work, keep up the good work. Best wishes & stay safe.
i suffer from social anxiety...this is like heaven to me
I wanted to see how the streets looked like now and u even provided a comparison cool!!
Great coverage! You have given me my first real sense of how much Manhattan has changed.
I'm thankful that groceries, banks and pharmacies are open where I live in Houston Tx. For the most part, everywhere is vacant like NYC
Makes me cry! But thanks for this short and informative video.
thank you for sharing this. I hope we can look back at this and learn a lot.
This is good for environment and animals, CO² gasses have fallen by 25% this week in america
You mean Carbon Monoxide and is the worse than Dioxide instead.
unfortunately too little too late for climate change 😣
@Ronnie Rising Yes, they do, and excess Co2 warms the atmosphere by trapping heat in the Ozone layer. Thats the problem- we are cutting down all the forests so the plants arent eating all our excess Carbon emissions. More trees, less pollution= massive reduction in global warming.
It's sad but true. This really is good for the Earth & planet, it's terrible but we humans have really let are greed get the better of us. I don't like the virus, but I am glad at least one good thing is coming out of this, I hope pollution goes down big-time after.
@Shamoun Kyriakos I'm sorry but I must politely inform you that you are mistaken. Average or small quantities of CO2 are fine yes, but only to a point. If they exceed a certain percentage then it is in fact capable of causing a body harm. Where I fear & feel the confusion is coming from, is the lack of considering how grave and far the extent of deforestation has gone. We no longer have the forests of old that we did even a mere fifty years ago. Much less a hundred. Trees do need carbon dioxide, but...we don't have the trees. Thereby leaving over time larger & larger amounts of Co2 in the atmosphere, which is heating the planet & if nothing else is causing lung problems for those in Beijing & Hong Kong China. Which is why masks are common there. It isn't lies. It's just a point connected to another dire problem, and one that greedy corporations do not want to be addressed or fixed because to fix it will lose them a severe amount of financial game & certain politics in ANY party will contrast the scientific fact & muddy the causes & effects because those same greedy companies will pay them either under the table or upfront for them to argue & nay say what actually is. Listen I work for Starbucks, I love my job, & maybe I am a hypocrit, but I know that somewhere my company is adding to the destruction of the rainforest, so that coffee beans can be farmed. No one is clean, however to say that something is a lie, when it is poorly stated but true, won't help. Also I really felt like someone should inform you of the destruction of the forests around the globe part of the conversation because if we did have the forests then you would in fact be mostly correct. The sad truth of the matter though, is this: we do not. They are gone, however, the good news: If companies like Starbucks could be redirected then maybe, just maybe we can have those trees again? We have to hope so. Thank you for reading & in you're way caring.
Truck and delivery drivers must love it!
First of all let me say I am so sorry for everything you guys are going through. I am glad you are able to enjoy the beauty that is there. Good Job NY! Awesome self control! We are hoping and praying that the new infections and deaths go down fast.
I am glad that you showed the before the NY pause picture since that really highlights the dramatic difference. I live in wedged in the hills and mountains at the edge of the Cascade range in rural southern Oregon. Your quiet is so nice to see. Now our streets in rural Oregon are utterly dead now. I miss seeing people walking, biking and going to Farmer's Markets. People are taking the physical distancing seriously here and I am glad that New York is as well. Since we already stayed 9 feet apart during regular times people feel the need to drive into the mountains to exercise away from one another.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this..
And yes, this kind of thing happening around the globe, that alone gives me chill😵😵
Cycling is the way forward, the world needs to wake up to this. Here in the UK the bike is making a massive come back and I hope it stays big time after the virus has gone. We too can breath fresh air here also.
I love it! Imagine the city was always like that but for good reasons.
I wouldn’t mind visiting New York again of it were like this
Katie M I’m originally from Staten Island and the only time we would go to Manhattan was at night when downtown was calmer like this. It’s not a bad place when it’s 85% empty. Now I’ve moved to the NJ shore. Never going back
Great video! Love seeing the contrast shots. Stay safe!
The present is different from the past, and the future will be different from the present. So it has been and always will be.
Thanks for doing this. Shout out to New Yorkers and sincere hopes this will end soon.
You see I love this. A bike is great for your health but it’s an absolutely superb form of transportation
Excellent before and after videos. It's really amazing to see how this virus has affected New Yorkers lives and places all over the world.
Nicely done! Thanks for the impressions and comparison!
Best video thank you sir.....you're service congrats 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏continues video s waiting for watching
Was in Brooklyn Navy Yard at same time of your video. Went up Canal over Manhattan Bridge and it was like driving on Easter Sunday. Great video. Thanks for sharing as others should see this.
Very informative video.
Here in Philadelphia things are close to normal.
I cycle everywhere I go.
Friday it was pretty quiet with very lite car and truck traffic.
Yesterday and today traffic much more normal.
But I did notice a big reduction of pedestrians and jump in bicycle traffic.
Looks like we're getting our exercise in, in Philly !
Again, very informative video!
PEACE !!!!
It's so wonderful to see so many walking around the city kind of videos. That's what I'd do in real life if I could but obviously, I can't afford that. thanks
Stay safe, keep social distance, wash your hands frequently.
Thank you for doing this!!!!
You are welcome. It was the last time I ventured into Manhattan - nearly 2 1/2 weeks ago. Can't imagine now.
Bicycles are better at social distancing than cars, buses or trains.
Indeed.
Gabriel G I think (hope) he means a single-rider bicycle creates more social distancing than car pooling.
social distancing? You mean physical distancing.

A dramatic 5 minute movie called "Empty Streets"
@@StreetfilmsCommunity Do yoy know Louis Rossmann? He's another new yorker who likes to make youtube videos while riding his bike around new york.
Fantastic report!
Yeah, i’m sure that was crazy smelling the change in the air. Lol, love that Norwegian cruise line add
The thing is: NYC's air has been much better the last 20 years. Or at least it seems like it is. Then you smell how fresh it has been of late.....WOW!
Streetfilms
I believe that!!
Thanks for this! Empty Times Square completely freaks me out.
If anything, it just emphasises the shitty air you're normally breathing in NY and other big cities. As a small village person from Scotland, I love my fresh air, but whenever I go to London, the snot in my nose turns black.
Oh really....miss the vomit and piss on the streets do you ?
the air is shitty because of the cars---so how do you get to London?
I don't go to London but same, every time I go to my country's capital I have a dry cough for days. And ours isn't as big and full as London lol
Plenty of fresh air in Duns.
Great documentary. Stay safe. God bless.
“ Historically documentary.”
Okay, lol 😂 😂😂
Nice work. Thanks.👍
Incredible!
Excellent and thank you :)
I haven't been there in over 21 years maybe a little more.It has changed a lot from the videos you show.I miss it a little but could never do all that commuting as i use to when i was younger.
That was very well done, thank you! New York sure looks different from when I lived there back in the early 1970s! And of course the city looks different now for what it would have looked like a month ago.
FEELS THE SAME HERE IN LOS ANGELES
thank you for your sharing on the current street view of NYC as a cyclist, which gives us a direct presentation of the existential impact that the virus has bought to the city, and what is really appreciable is the comparison of same sites' view with the previous norm that conveys the degree of impact.
Informative. Good video!
Wow! New York City's streets are running at the capacity their supposed to run at! The highways are actually giving speeds above a snail!
I walked along Skillman Avenue and on the Queensborough Bridge that day, and they were indeed quite barren, even at sundown.
Thanks for this. Stay safe
Watching this 04-03-2020. As the epicenter of coronavirus in the USA. NYC last nite had 1,000 deaths. Stay safe and avoid all human contact!
Thanks for sharing. I was wondering what Central Park was looking like. Stay safe out there. Peace. (DH, Oklahoma City, Mar 24, 2020)
Thanks for the tour.
I've haven't been to NYC for 30years. I moved to P.R It sure looks different no bike lane when I lived in.nyc.
Born snd raised in Harlem
Reminds me of "I am legend" I Hamilton (near TORONTO) in Canada HSR wants people on the bus 6 feet apart. Yesterday there were 6 passengers and 2 drivers. One driving and one going to the bus garage at the end of shift. The bus was full no more pickups. They maintained normal schedule but would not pick up anyone. No pickups and the bus gets ahead of schedule because no time is needed to pick up anyone. Slow the bus down do a service adjustment so the drive times are right.
This reminds me of the scene from on the beach almost surreal to see New York with almost no cars compared to the way it is normally., the city that never sleeps right now is taking a well-deserved rest.....
Fun video man, entertaining - but simple ( :
That's a very smart bike you have there.
NYC is still beautiful....god bless america
It's the same here in CHI~ Town, Man... It's eerie.
Thanks...this is cool
virtual one of the only videos not from the media but from a civilian that shows the streets.
I live in the UK, in the seaside town of Bournemouth, and its great to see so many people cycling and jogging during these unhappy and worrying times! I go out for an hours ride each day for exersize, and it is much like the scenes in your video- much less traffic, much more people enjoying the relaxed pace of cycling and walking! Keep up the good work, stay safe in the big city!
Still more crowded than most medium-sized cities in North America before the epidemics. lol
Well that is because here in NYC there are almost 9 million of us living within the five boroughs that make up New York City. New York State itself is massive compared in size as far as space goes however in totality the population of NY State is 19.54 million yet it's about 5000 square miles bigger then the UK with a far lower population so throughout the state it would be way less populated. Also certain spots that are just regular active zones out here as well. I live close to Yankee Stadium and in between a mall and a shopping district called Third Avenue and trust me it's like Central Park even right now as scene in this video. After 8 pm it's pretty much dead.
Very fascinating
How long do you think the restaurants and Broadway shows will be shut down?
nice job I enjoyed it
Hare Krishna! wishing blessings to all my people in NYC & around the world!
Nice one buddy stay safe
Cicyclists should all be wearing protective glasses in case someone coughs or spits in their eyes . Sunlight and exercise are vital to maintain a strong immune system and it is extremely good for the mind . I think people will lose their minds from "cabin fever" and information overload long before ever catching the virus while cicyling . We are learning more every day about how to deal with the virus so the keeping distance is vital . From what I read the virus does not last long in sunshine The surfaces outside could have the virus so wear thin breathable gloves anyway .
This is exactly the same in the UK.. Let's hope we can learn from this.. Stay safe everybody..
Cool Video, thanks for showing.
Also good NY UA-camrs : riding with Jahv and Kelsey Leigh
I was out two days ago trying to find a bike and luckily I was able to find one. They really do seem to be selling out. The Walmart I went to the Walmart worker said they stock up and within an hour sell out.
It's hard to imagine that Central Park was ever not car free! Wow. Same with 14th St Bus lane
5:51 what bike brand and model is this? (looks so awesome sleek and clean)
where is the green market located in Manhattan?
Born and raised on Staten Island and have always hated the other boroughs but now they almost look like a nice place to be.
Clarence, I see you are riding a WorkCycles bicycle. I guess very few Americans know how to appreciate the quality of this bicycle. Good for you for having this bicycle.
As to the corona virus … brace yourself. Expect it to get worse.
Regards from The Netherlands.
p.s. Your backlight seems disconnected. Looks like you have a Shimano 8 gear hub. Good for the city. I own a WorkCycles with a Rohloff hub. Which is more suitable for hilly terrain. But I digress. What I want to say is for you to try a leather Brooks bicycle saddle for this bicycle. Very comfy. Both in summer as well as in winter time.
Disadvantages: a) It requires more care and maintenance, b) it is slightly heavier, and c) the coating will color/contaminate your pants slightly.
Thanks Clarence👌
This is so cool, thank you for the great footage! I love your bike, it looks like a very rugged version of our Dutch bicycles. I'd love to see data on air pollution during this crisis, I'm afraid it will be pretty mind-blowing. Hope we learn something from that and keep some of the positive effects of this for longer.
It is an environmental gift........ Would we ever get the world to stop!! !!even for a moment?
Look at us all now!!!!! NATURE BREATHING WITHOUT ALL THE INDUSTRY!!!!
ITS A MIRACLE FOR MOTHER EARTH. We can learn a lot at this moment people....
I KINDA LIKE WALKS WITHOUT WORRYING about the CARS !!!! The spring birds are returning as well..,
NEW PERSONAL SPACE, FORCED VACATION.....COULD BE WORSE!😁
Thanks to Canadians across this country!..merci. STAY HOME BE SAFE
This is always how it should be. By bicycle. Be smart. Stay safe. This is no joke and should not be taken lightly. At this time many cities are implementing citing people without essential work authorization letters in possession.
Thanks!
Nice movie and be safe.
like your bern helmet. they are made less than a mile from me. cool video to show current conditions.
Cycling is way more ideal then using a car in the Coronavirus crisis.
❤️your bike 🚲. I’m in les n people are all over fdr running
Great video man good coverage on everything....Sorry that your government did not jump on all of this sooner given that it knew about covid19 b4 Christmas
Cool! seattles on its way back as well.....
keep documenting
New York is quiet now I love it
Bicycles are good when you're by yourself and only going a short distance. And also when you need to do a few errands.
Stay strong nyc from wa state
Thank you for this illuminating video. I'm curious, if you're cycling behind others aren't you constantly breathing in their expelled air?
Whether or not that is happening, it is much better than being in an enclosed subway, a bus, in a cab, and Uber or even inside of a store.
@@StreetfilmsCommunity This is true.
I am at home watching virus pandemic and zombie movies for 5 days now! Think I will becoming zombie soon if this is not over within the next few days..... From Bangkok 😄
wwphuying 😂
Try next few months, at least! Cases are still going up in Thailand. Meanwhile, binge 'Containment'. It was a 13 episode series that aired in 2016. Pretty good show. Really freaky in hindsight.
