1s😁 Great review Very in depth. On the portals looking to upgrade my Gen-7 with them when they come out and looking forward to getting my Gen-8 when it finally get here 😁
It's such a shame that Redcat is so expensive over here in Germany. And since it's almost the price of an Axial or Traxxas over here, it doesn't get much love.
Quick question about the notchy gear issue. I'm just wondering if water getting into the diff may be an issue if you back off the screws a little or clearance the carrier like you did? Would packing the housings with grerase eliminate any concern? Again, love the channel! Keep up the great vids!
The diffs aren't water tight, so water will get in anyway. If you go through a lot of water, packing the axles full of grease will help to keep it out.
It's a little bit hard to say since the Gen8 isn't out yet for us to get a real world account of capabilities or durability, but based on the info that I have and my experience with the portals, I'd say it depends. The Deadbolt has the benefit of a massive aftermarket, so parts support and upgrade potential is essentially limitless, but overall I'd say that's where the Deadbolt advantages end. I would expect the Gen8 to be a much more capable truck out of the box, and should have adequate parts support directly from Redcat.
They sued arrma cuz their truck with laid down shocks was better than traxxas, if redcats portal axles turn out brtter than the ones on the trx4 then redcat will likely be sued too even tho traxxas didnt invent horizontal pushrod suspension or portal axles
Im guessing the updated spool is also a sintered metal piece. It just started larger and had more machining done to it. Could be wrong. Itd have to get under a microscope to be sure.
Great job with the honest info, keeping it real. not phony acting with poor beats,/sounds that crank up 10 db on the 10 ads inserted in a 4 minute vid... keep it real . subd and thumbed. BTW how did you get the upgraded part? any links? Im tired of buying replacements (OEM) thankfully LHS has plenty available.,
Redcat provided the replacement parts to everybody who participated in the Beta portal program. The replacement parts are exactly the same as what now comes in the portal kit and on the Gen8.
Thanks for the info. I just bought a set of the beta axle set on ebay for $40 shipped. And was wondering why the gears are so notchy. Thanks for the tip on the diff housing.
Can’t wait to get my Gen 8 Boys ! People are going to be shocked at me since I only do Gas ⛽️ and Modified Nitro Engines RC’s lmao 😂! I’ve always had a thing for crawlers special place for them in my hart. I’ve had some crawlers 3 to 5 years ago I had Axial’s and a crappy Summit and even a home made customized LST with a Nitro Engine that had Reverse, 2 speed really low gear ⚙️ ratios and another set of 2speed with hi gear ⚙️ ratios so it was a 4 speed at the end of the day and I locked the slipper clutch and used Shoe Goo glue on the front and rear diffs . I swear it out lasted and out performed both of my traxxas summits lol 😆! This was a great 👍 video and very well explained hope you guys had a merry Christmas 🎄🎁! Once I get my Gen 8 maybe you guys can tell me what to get or recommend . I will always be a Brappp ⛽️💥💨 head but I will definitely get more crawlers in the future.
LOL U gotta be busy man too, if ur seeing me everywhere then u must be in just as many places lol also means u got great taste in rc videos🤣Happy Holidays brotha
Just bought a redcat 7 for my son for xmas but might get the gen 8 for myself soon. I'm new to RC crawlers but have been into RC aircraft since 1985 and had my fair share of full size crawlers in the past.
Great detailed review..nice studio also👍.. Definitely getting the Gen8 after I upgrade my Gen7 with the Portal Axle kit. That BPC chassis along with the portals...going to be a fun upgrade to install.
Interesting. You're the only one I've heard with that problem. Guys are breaking the new upper portal gear in the fronts, but I never heard of anybody breaking a pinion. Maybe yours was a fluke.
I asked the question on there Gen8 Facebook page and was told it was a common problem. I wouldn’t know really as I’m new to the hobby. I wasn’t doing anything crazy either. I did basically the same night run as in my video on that Facebook page. I did go through some light mud and water in my ditch. But nothing crazy.....they covered it though, without any questions. Just asked for a pic.
Only the use will show how robust the updates are,but they look not bad. I run my TRX4 hard (rock an river crawling) and non part breaks even non in the portals. If Red Cat can compete only time will tell, but i like the Scout very much for look ,equippment and the prize this can be a change in the scale crawler market .
You're right. Time will tell, but the updates are a huge improvement over the original design. The portals did great on an easy trail drive today. They even survived my 6 year old driving on 3s.
Did you notice the panhard is a little too long? It's not adjustable and it throws my front housing to the passenger side a good 1/4" and the bumpsteer is terrible. Bad enough to push the driver's lower link into the frame rail. Got in on the pre-order for the new portal upgrade kit. Got em today and am a bit disappointed in what it's done to my nearly perfectly tuned truck for my $100...
I definitely noticed that something is jacked up, but I haven't had time to see what yet. On throttle the whole truck leans hard to the left and it drives me nuts. I get huge tire rub from it.
@@BudgetRC_Channel So I took the dremel after the panhard and took off about 1/16" or so. It helped with the bumpsteer a fair bit. I'm running into the steering link binding at the horn and not allowing full drop of the passenger front as well. I think an angled rod end and a couple shims to lengthen the arm will remedy it. The panhard and steering link are the same part out of the box and everything is assembled in the upgrade kit, so they saved an extra assembly, but threw a bunch of bind in the front geometry.
@@BudgetRC_Channel No problem man. You put a lot of time in you videos so if it helps at all, then all the better. What I've figured out is that with a stock spring and shock truck the issues on the panhard may not be as bad, but the steering link bind will be worse. I run my Gen 7 with a ton of droop, which was making the panhard long sitting level and static. When you take the extra front upper link off you can move the angled ball end to the horn end of the steering link and help the bind, but may still require some shimming to add length. In addition to cutting the 1/16" off the panhard, I had to space it off the axle housing mount with just under 3/8" !! of spacers to keep the lower end of the pandard from hitting the frame at the lower corner at full compression. Got most everything working but the bumpsteer is inevitable with a servo on chassis setup...
Your channel is simply outstanding. Smart & informative. Can't wait to see your review on the Gen 8. Thanks. Quick Q. I'm usually of the belief that the less parts something has, the less chance there is of something to break. Would this be a fair assessment or question to ask? Will crawlers with portal axles, despite being better for crawling with the clearance, fundamentally be more prone to breaks? Curious on your thoughts. Thanks.
Generally yes, the more parts there are, the better the design and manufacturing has to be to maintain a certain reliability. One could argue that a stone wheel is more reliable than a steel wheel and a rubber tire, but we've accepted that the benefits of a wheel and tire are worth the potential tradeoff in reliability. It's up to the market to decide whether the portals are worth the potential loss of reliability. The popularity of the TRX4, combined with the lack of portal problems would indicate that portals can be very reliable when executed properly.
