  • Many singers experience tongue root engagement as they sing higher in pitch. In this video, I share an exercise for releasing tension at the tongue root and retraining the tongue root to lean forward.

    Definitely helpful! For someone with normal vocal tension, this definitely gives relief. Thanks for your time!

      I think i may have overdone it by singing with the tongue root tension and now my throat hurts and kinda swollen

      I'm so glad to hear this! I have several videos on this topic of tongue root tension in my Eliminating Tension playlist. You should be able to type SingWise and tongue root tension into the UA-cam search bar and find them.

    I honestly have no hope! I’ve been trying to counteract this for months and everything I try doesn’t seem to work! I always feel my younger engage and push out the bottom of my jaw and I’ve been told that tension, assuming that’s right I can’t seem to get it to relax! Any other tips?

      Muscle relaxation drugs because it sounds like the tension is coming from your internal stress

      Thanks, Rachel. Do you use a similar exercise with your students?

      I usually do the tongue resting on bottom lip, but I will try this one, its less embarrassing haha

      I do many weird looking tongue exercises with my students... but they're highly effective!

    As ever I get put off by my ' break' especially on the third note of the last of the three 5 tone scales... unless I ought to start on the D4 feeling like I am in ' head voice' ... or do I just let it transition... ?
    in fact if I start the first one of C4 feeling like I am in head voice position... laryngeal tilt? Then I have no problem!!
    I listened to you many times and you are in one register

    I know you’ve expressed your feelings on the subject before, but do you see yourself making a series on vibrato in the future?

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 років тому +4

      I could post a video or two on the topic of vibrato, but since I don't believe in teaching it directly (but do believe that it's already there and we simply have to create the optimal conditions for it to emerge), I would likely focus on exercises (e.g., agility) that will encourage its appearance.

      Enough that you can memorize what it feels like to not contract the tongue root while you sing.

    You said for the tongue to lean against the front wall of the pharynx but the tongue itself is the front wall of the pharynx

    • @Naypa11
      @Naypa11 Рік тому

      When vocalizing it won't retract towards the back of the pharynx, dampening resonance

  • @TadeusOfficial

    How far back does the tip of the tongue have to reach?

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 років тому +2

      Not far at all! I only slightly curl mine back and allow it to sit comfortably behind the (alveolar) ridge behind the upper front teeth. If you let it curl too far back, you'll get tension and the tongue root won't be leaning forward.
