    In this 30-minute FF7 history lesson, let's take a good hard look at what this legendary game had to offer, and why it is still remembered as one of the most influential masterpieces of the generation. First in a two-part in-depth FFVII retrospective, where we delve into the beginnings of Final Fantasy on the NES, all the way through Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation, the best-selling and most treasured game in the franchise. Learn about the spin-off games such as Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2, and Crisis Core (PSP), as well as the game's inspiration to the gaming industry.
    We will explore the 2005 movie sequel Advent Children, the game's now 20-year old graphic style and mechanics, and what this means to the upcoming FF7 Remake.
    Story and battle mechanics research excerpted from Patrick Holleman's 'Reverse Design: Final Fantasy 7':

      I remember buying this game and thinking... this is what some friends wanted me to play... this?! I had never played a serious RPG and it would only a week or so until I would be hooked.
      I stand blown back when I think of how nostalgic this masterpeice is (intentionally misprint... FFVII inside joke).
      I'd even go as far to say that; "no game has ever captured my attention, made me ask questions or even felt so massive (both story and side progression) since".
      I would just like to state how incredibly awesome this two-part video series was. You both did an amazing job and it was not only reminiscent, but also did capture the essence of what I feel - is FFVII. Excuse me while I wipe my tears... seriously though, I can't thank you both enough for the work involved here.
      My hope is that it's possibly the remake will be enjoyed by long time fans (it may never be the original, but '97/'98 were unique times) as well as bring in a new crowd. For at least they'd be able to experience some of what I was so fortunate to.

      FF7 is an amazing game. I love it from start to finish. It will always be one of my favorite games. I got to watch my wife do a blind playthrough of the game (almost 20 years later) and now it's one of her favorite games as well. It's now something that I want to share with friends and family.

    Kids don't realize how important this game was back in the day, for many of us it was one of the first games we got with the PlayStation one, playstation one and final fantasy seven are inseparable memories. The 3d graphics, the cinematic cutscenes, the story line, the colours, the summons and limit breaks, the chocobos the airship the open world map, the bosses the music, sephiroph, aeriths death, jesses death, dynes death, the funny moments, golden saucer, the weapons, the materia, the cyberpunk city of midgar. The relationships between the characters, the swearing, the dark moments which were pretty dark for a kid. The Turks and their theme tune. Cosmo Canyon, Vincent and his mansion. Final fantasy 7 was epic, long and beautiful, what a memory. Would love to see a live action movie version like they did with Ghost In The Shell because I like futuristic cyberpunk Dystopia movies

Being a fan of someone's channel and then getting a chance to collab with them is quite a humbling experience. Although it was hard at times, I think we both learned a lot about what it takes to deliver a cohesive product that spans more than one UA-cam Channel. I have so many memories playing ff7 back when I was in the 4th grade. My Korean buddy first showed it to me at his house and I was amazed just watching him play. I took me a few months for my rents to buy me a copy but I played it for hundreds of hours. I still have the original copy and book that came with it. The story and soundtrack will stay with me forever. I don't have time for games now and unfortunately won't play the new one much but I'll certainly buy a copy or any bundle systems that Sony releases just because.

  • @jjb2655

    I agree. I also say it all the time, people just don't mention this enough - when this game came out we had just finished 16 bit master pieces such as Chrono Trigger, FF6, and Secret of Mana. We jumped into CD based music epic, pre-rendered graphics, unprecedented cut scenes and summon sequences, while maintaining complex story and characters. The jump was so large that nothing can compare prior to or since it's release from an user experience level! Not 8-bit to16-bit and not 32-bit to our current generation systems today. People today claiming FF7 as overrated or rank lower than it should be simply can't grasp this point. It is in many ways the Michael Jordan of video games.

    The story is so engaging, the characters so endearing, and the world of Final Fantasy VII is like nothing seen before or since. Yet despite all those qualities, there’s something truly indescribable that makes it standout from all the others in the franchise and the medium as a whole - and it’s more than simple nostalgia. This game had such a profound impact on so many people, partly because it’s so good, and partly because it arrived at a time when video games were evolving into something more than just ‘games’. For a lot of those people, FFVII is the game that defines that era, especially those of us growing up back then.

  • @dantespimp

    THANK YOU for that bit on Sephiroth. It's been very annoying explaining to today's gamers that the original FF7 game painted a gray-shaded villain that wasn't about world domination, but a product of his emotions and his past. A lot of gamers assume Crisis Core was the only game that made Sephiroth complex. However, FF7 had achieved this in the most subtle, genius way. From the irony of Sephiroth's snide remarks toward Hojo (calling him a 'mass of complexes') to Sephiroth allowing Cloud to visit family to hints of his relationship with Gast, FF7 required gamers to PAY ATTENTION and piece together Sephiroth's past and persona. It's a great injustice whenever I come across a new FF7 gamer, claiming Sephiroth in FF7 was black and white while Sephiroth in Crisis Core was complex. Far from the truth.

    • @Indigo_Gaming
      @Indigo_Gaming  7 років тому

      I'm glad you appreciated that bit. I thought I might have been seeing things that weren't there, but despite the series of "Sephiroth-lites" we got in JRPGs following Final Fantasy VII, I still think he was a very layered and interesting villain. One extra bit of depth in the story of VII was the fact that Cloud had illusions he was telling himself about what actually happened, so you really have to read into the game's plot to figure out what was really going on.

    I love FF7's music and I think it's the purest example of its brilliance. While it's visuals, writing, graphics, and storytelling are all locked to or limited by its time and place on the PlayStation, the music is a beautiful window into the vision of the project and why it is so loved. If I were to give a kid today a PlayStation controller and memory card and told them to play FF7, i am certain they will not have the same experience with it that I did when it was first released in 1997. But the music has stood the test of time. It can be enjoyed by anyone and understood for its brilliance in any time and context. It is the true essence of the creators vision. It communicates what everyone in the Squaresoft studio wanted to communicate. It is in my opinion unrivaled in video games as the greatest soundtrack of all time.

    Final fantasy seven was the first game I got when I finally bought a PlayStation in 1997. I had growing up playing Krono trigger, Final Fantasy for and final fantasy six, as well as Mystic Quest lol And discreet as those games are, final fantasy seven resonated with me from the first time I saw the promotional art of cloud standing in front of the Shinra tower. I was obsessed. I dug into the game and didn’t stop until I had uncovered every possible secret. The story riveted me, probably fertilized the SeeDs (wink wink) of my environmentalist opinions; The music stirred my heart and my imagination, the story took me around the world and into outer space even.
    I remember once defeating Gi Nattak And then I forgot to save, or my save file got overwritten and I ended up having to start over from the beginning. I was so devastated because I thought I had gotten so far in the game LOL. This was the most epic-in a literal sense of the word-game that I had ever played to that point. Probably still, although subsequent Final Fantasy us have had pretty epic story lines.
    I fucking love this game. I could fucking talk about it all goddamn day

    I'm an old time gamer, I was 33 years old when I played FFVII. I just bought a Nintendo 64, had it for two weeks. But because they stuck with cartridges with the promise of adding a disc player later, I sold the 64 and bought a Playstation. Glad I did, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to play this masterpiece back then when it dropped. I still have an original PS1 copy, a PSP copy and now a Nintendo Switch copy. It may not be seen as the greatest RPG of all time to others, but it is to me. That first time you summon Knights of the Round, after sweating to breed a gold Chocobo to get the materia...awesome!

    Loved the Golden Saucer. It gave us a break from time to time; a form of comic relief from the constant battles.
    I passed many hours trying to breed the best chocobos and racing them at the saucer.
    I also enjoyed the flirtatious nature of Cloud's relationship with Aeris, and his obvious love of Tifa. My favorite scenario was when Cloud had to dress up as a girl to rescue Tifa from the house of ill repute. I have the game saved to the start of that part; and get a great thrill out of replaying it with every possible combination of key items; just to see the differences.
    I'm always looking to buy one more copy of the game; just in case (gasp) anything should damage my originals.

    Just a quick note about the beginning of the video: Final Fantasy didn't come from nowhere. It's hevily inspired by Enix's Dragon Quest, and both are tributary to Wizardry games. There were a lot of adventure games and dungeon crawlers for the early PC market which inspired console developers of the mid 80's.

    My first Final Fantasy game that I cut my teeth on was Final Fantasy 10. I have only now just started playing the older Final Fantasy games including 7. When I was a kid I went for the Sony created alternative Legend of the Dragoon. Which was my first introduction in to JRPG's. Its the only original Playstation game I have left. Although I've bought more since this revival really started to kick off these last few years. It will probably be a while before I am able to beat all the final Fantasy's leading up to 10 as I am also on a quest to play the original kings or the CRPG's as well (I'm about halfway through Baldurs Gate).

    Great video. I'm curious if anyone knows what the quickest time is to complete this game. I've played all the way through five times. the first time I maxed out my timer and probably put in another hundred hours past that. I've also completed every aspect of the game in about 60 hours on another run through, and I've defeated sephiroth in about 18 hours on one or my save files. I'd like to run through this game the quickest anyone has ever done; I believe I can do it in about 13 hours after noticing I never turned up the battle and dialogue speeds that you can set upon starting the game. I'd like to know what the quickest time is as I plan to do this feat this year and I will video tape the entire thing.

    I remember playing both FF6 and FF7 and loving them both..but I remember the schism that 7 created among players. I remember numerous arguments between gamers who loved one but hated the other, specifically because of the differences between the games. I finally realized the differences could be boiled down to the difference between reading a book (FF6) and watching a movie (FF7). I wonder how the reboot of FF7 will turn out, and how it will affect future games not only in the FF line, but to other games the world over.

    Great video essay, you guys!
    To add a little to the conversation: I played this game once more in 2018 and I was surprised at how well it still holds up. The controls feel a bit clunky and the 3D graphics are of course dated, but the story has lost nothing of its impact, the music is still absolutely phenomenal, and the gameplay is still good.
    One thing that does feel a bit off, though this is a minor thing, is that the game is still a product of it's time, the decade after the Cold War and before 9/11. With the coming of the remake, it does feel weird that the protagonists of this game are eco-terrorists.

    • @Indigo_Gaming
      @Indigo_Gaming  3 роки тому +1

      That's a common issue with remakes. Entertainment is often a product of its time, so creators instinctively try to make the story relevant to current events again, often missing the point of the original.

    I still remember seeing FFVII first time in some gaming magazine... It was before we had internet access in Poland (well, it wasn't cheap then and needed for kids ;) ), I watched photos and read articles from 2 or 3 magazine I had with this game in them for hours. After a while, I bought a pirated PC copy for like 20$ (games was hard to get that time, most stuff in Poland was pirated and it was normal for us) and had to wait another year before I could play it (was a jump for me from 486 to pentium III if I remember good).. but boy, it was worth it. I didn't go out to play with friends outside for days. It had never seen graphics, massive world, great battles and story.. I had a bug (with kernel file missing) at one point in gameplay, couldn't repair it, so I just started new game and played it again and again. Shame, we had no steam then so I would know how many thousand hours I played it till now (sometimes I go back even now, still one of the best games out there)

      Yeah, it's really fun to try to get high scores on and get rewards. I think one point that gets missed, in the theme of why everyone loved this game is, simply the colors of the game. They are still cartoonish. This allows the players to enjoy the "fantasy", meanwhile it captures the thoughts, "the mind", the hearts and souls with their storytelling that is far too real. The final Fantasy Remake, with their new game designs, and graphic engines will remove that "fantasy" or cartoony imagery, and will make the end user left less satisfied when compared to the original 1995 FF7 . While true Fans will most certainly enjoy the remake, while trying to relive the flashbacks it will leave less for imagination and therefore wont be as Cartoony or fun in otherwords......................I think :D

      Thanks Toni, I agree that some of the charm and character of having cartoonish superdeformed characters got lost later in the series. I guess that's a tradeoff for more realistic and high-def graphics, but I do miss the over-the-top reactions and expressions of the little character models/sprites on-screen.

    • @cookieskoon2028
      @cookieskoon2028 5 років тому

      I honestly think it's less the cartoony proportions and more the overall presentation. You can have realistically proportioned characters in a vividly gorgeous game. As an example, look at the first Fable. It is definitely stylized, but still believable (aka not Chibi). Its use of color and whimsy is excellent in a 3D medium.
      Another example is Breath of Fire IV. Those 2D sprites had very believable proportions and still came off as expressive and cartoon like. Suikoden 1 and 2 are also good examples.
      I think relying on super-deformed chibis is a cop-out in the place of true creative expression. It is the "'member berry" of modern gaming trying to cash in on nostalgia without substance.

    Only people truly growing up in these time periods playing this can really understand the true experience that is FF VII and to that respect the PS era of rpgs. Its a shame all these millennial's with their there photo realistic graphics just can't see what makes these rpg games special. I tried to get my sister to play this and she couldn't get it into it. I asked her why? "Because the characters look like blocks and there is no voice acting". Well allow me to pass on some wisdom or knowledge to the uninitiated. First of all with respect to these classical hardware and rpg roots, the story telling medium really had no limits at this time because your dealing with sprite work and 2d backgrounds overlayed over polygonal textures. Just imagine the scope you had at your creative fingers to not only tell a massive story but create a huge world. We were not confined and restricted because of advanced technologies that were using today. With PS1 graphics, you can tell a fantasy epic that spanned 60-80 hrs. Can you do that now consistently like you did back then? Hardly! and here is why, all your games on modern generation hardware either have to tell a large scale story as a multiple episodic game series compromised of many games or things have to be prioritized to appeal to a certain audience. Example being many games today opt for more open world gameplay and structures in favor of placing more focus on narrative. As a result your left with lots of games that look huge and massive in scale from the out set but from a story perspective and design perspective, ultimately your in a much smaller space. and that is ONE of the MANY reasons why old classic story telling rpgs completely dwarfed the likes of many modern games you play today in this genre. Anyways this is just my personal insight into it. I have always been a huge fan of classic rpg story telling for this reason. I feel like after i finish a PS1 rpg, I went through a 60 hr epic narrative with a massive world teeming with many design philosophies and diversity. When i finish a PS4 game, its like ok. Finished act 1 and that was a splendid experience but where is Chapter 2 now?

    FF7 was so.. topical for its time. The environmental pollution concerns, the cloning of Dolly controversy and Japan's struggling economy of the 90's were all alluded to in the game's themes one way or another. I don't think any other FF game tried to connect to the real world issues nearly as much as FF7 did.

    I enjoy the VII series and XIII series equally. Both for different reasons.

    Well, maybe not so much EU/ANZ players concerning being put on the same page. More like utter confusion given that none of the previous mainline installments were localized until VII in PAL regions. VII really open the door to get more RPGs in those areas, though, and ports of the older ones came rushing out quickly over the next few years.
