Fun Fact: Monoliths & Dimensions was Fantano's first 10/10 album in 2008

Mason McClure 10 more and it’s a MAYBE
Don't forget to also use his seatgeek promo code
Mason, please look inside the 59 wallets. That's how you'll get your mom back.
Fantano requires 69 wallets for your mom back in classic/10 condition

9/10 for me, nice to see an album more on the metal side being reviewed after such a gap
hell yeah ikr. I review a lot of metal--lots else as well, like him--but I can't tell you how many times I wish he'd review some things I review just to hear his thoughts as well! :)
@@TheMetalTempestYT saw you reviewed numenorean, automatic subscribe lol
i need sprite Word! I’m fucking shook that he didn’t cover Inter Arma’s, ‘Sulfur English’, which for me is like a 9.6, and my fav metal album so far this year... I knew he’d be reviewing this one at least.. ‘Life Metal’ gets an 8/10 for me, but that’s after having only listened to it the whole way through once, and then listening to individual tracks a few times, so it may grow on me more. I kinda get why he doesn’t review metal as much as he used to, but it’s a serious bummer imo...
I’ve never been a huge metalhead (though that’s changing), and I often used to rely on Antny to point me in the right direction on metal, especially in the early days, circa 2010-2013, when he used to review a good deal of metal. I know where to look nowadays, but I still miss his regular metal reviews..
J Morris the Review Guy Hell yeah, man, I recently subbed to you. Gotta check out your last few reviews, I’m behind. Keep up the good work! ♾
Really
2nd metal review of 2019. At this rate we might get to see as many as 4 more reviews by the end of the year!
The next king Gizzard album is most likely thrash metal, make that 5
@@gino-tx2we What are you talking about? It's already out, and it's like boogie-blues.
Michael Drane Yeah, it’s definitely nothing near metal, but I think it’s pretty good!
no one listening to it right now, it’s interesting, not too shabby. I they supposed to be doing another multi-album year, though, or is it a one off?
no one Me either, but I’ve never been a huge fan of theirs tbh. I mean, I do think a lot of their albums are pretty good, a few are great, and they haven’t ever put out anything I think is genuinely bad, but they’ve also never put out anything that’s over an 8/10 imo.
I think they have it in them to make something that’s a real masterpiece, at least a solid 9/10 album, but I think they’re going to have to cut the fat and focus on one album per year, or every other year maybe.. I think that would help. Then again, lots of artists used to put out an album or two a year, and they were consistently phenomenal.. Maybe Gizz have it in them to do that, but I think they have to up their songwriting if that’s gonna happen.
No offense to anyone who loves them.. again, I’m not saying they’re mediocre.. they’re just not mind blowing most of the time imo..
5:18 For me it's the exact opposite: I love how Hildur Guðnadóttir's vocals are placed in the mix. It feels like I'm standing in a concert hall, listening to SUNN's music filling the whole room, while someone is standing right next to me and whispering in my ear. I love the intimacy. Even though there's waves of drone guitars rolling over me nonstop, I can still make out every tiny detail of Hildur's voice recordings like little clicks and pops of her lips (that may even be enhanced; I don't know. But definitely intended).
My thoughts exactly. In fact Beneath.... is my fav Sunn 0))) track of all time. Such a mantra building to an epic cresendo.
0:26 “Most people don’t take the duos music that seriously but I do”
Well, melon’s approval is all that matters in this world.
approval does not matter in this world.
Iorveth Unless it’s from melon.
This album has a great sounding due to Albini's work,
who tries to record an album as if you were listening to a live performance. It's worth remembering that it was recorded in analog.
That’s a funny way of spelling 9/10. In all seriousness I thought ‘Between Sleipnir’s Breaths’ was a high point of the album. Hildur Guðnadóttir’s compressed to hell narration/singing on that track was so bone chilling. I guess I liked how hollow and disconnected it was from the instruments themselves. But hey that’s just me :)
PsychicAndIce I agree 100%, the first time I listened to this album and those vocals came out of nowhere it floored me. I can’t believe he didn’t like it
Her voice coupled with those riffs is just one of the most sublime musical moments of 2019 for me. Definitely a high point of the album.
yes, your opinion is not unpopular
My favourite track on the album too!
I came here to say this

FINALLY A METAL REVIEW, THANK YOU MELON GOD
He's done others...
Spoogebooge so far most is been awful rap albums
Spoogebooge But this year? Other than saying a couple words on a couple metal albums, during his “whyyounoreview?”, I’m pretty sure this is his first metal review of 2019... which, for longtime viewers, like myself, especially when there’s been a handful of fucking phenomenal metal albums this year (eg: Sulphur English, The Approaching Roar, Empath), it’s kind of a serious bummer.
I’m not even a massive metalhead, and I’m not saying the channel sucks without metal reviews, but I definitely don’t dig what he’s choosing to review this year, at least not compared to past years. A little less really shit rap and pop (and I like both of those things, just could be less crap), and a little more music with aggressive guitars, and electronic, and definitely more jazz, would be more to my preference, along with pop and rap... and I know that puts me in the minority, and this is a business, so yeah, it is what it is.
All this said, he’s introduced me to at least one hip hop album I love, and one pop album (baroque/indie pop, but still pop) I love, both of which I’d probably not have found otherwise, so I have that’s cool. I just miss the “middle period” of TND, with what I thought was a better variety, but whatever, I’ve been watching these reviews since late ‘09/early ‘10, so I’m not gonna stop now just bc there’s more stuff I think sucks..
Dashie41 Some good hip hop too, though! But yeah, more shitty rap and pop than past years, and severely lacking of shit with aggressive guitars. ‘Life Metal’ is dope, it’s an 8/10 for me, but at this rate he’ll only do like 3-4 proper reviews of metal albums in 2019... I’m hoping he doesn’t wait till the new Darkthrone album to review more metal, but my guess is that he’ll definitely at least review that one. (Though I’m worried he might “WHYYOUNOREVIEW?” it, like he’s done with all other metal albums up till now in ‘19)
@@nikolademitri731 what was that baroque/indie pop album called? You peaked my interest

Anthony is the time of real one to sit down at a metal concert.
Dude, you get mad if a band sounds the similar to previous albums they’ve done and then you get mad when they evolve. There’s nothing wrong with this record. It’s solid, sounds great, and it’s got a different quality to it without being too drastic. Plus the cover is badass.
This album honestly blew me away, probably up there with my top 3 fav Sunn albums. Novæ feels like a religious experience each time I listen.
Thank You Anthony! :-) I hope more metal music is reviewed as I've noticed there has been far less for some reason so far.
That big sigh at the beginning scared me, but I knew this was a good album.
Release the gizzard review coward
LMAO
So demanding
Just a heads up to everyone interested in this album, they'll also be releasing a companion album or EP--unsure yet--entitled Pyroclasts later this year, date unreleased.
On a separate note, I also reviewed this album if anyone's interested. Have a good day yo!
Thought I put Blood Fire Death the first time I listened to this.
Overt intro theft is overt.
One of my favourite bands to see live, can't wait to see them again this Autumn.
Thanks to you, I discovered Sunn O))) and I fell in love with these guys. The best ambient music, for reading, praying, working and just listening too.
You should check out Merzbow, Venerology is a great album for reading.
check out the cryo chamber channel they have a lot of great dark ambient stuff

the first video Anthony made was the video of him reviewing a sunn 0))) concert he went to.
Heyyy I'm really glad you decided to review this. Picked it up on RSD and immediately checked it out and really enjoyed it
I loved the record
They have performed many times with a trombonist the last few years... I have been waiting for them to incorporate that into a record because those spaces in the sets were incredibly
The brighter tones and uplifting frequencies made this an amazing release for me and I felt as though it was just as experimental as anything!
This is the album that got me into drone metal as a whole. I cant stop listening to between slepnir's breath
I’m really unsure what you’re listening to this album on, but I’m going to guess initially it was mainly headphones as you mention in a previous video that you do that a lot while listening to review material. I’m sure later that you listened to it on a hifi, but I think the initial listens on headphones may have clouded your judgment slightly of the later hifi experience. Hildur Guðnadóttir’s vocals sound epic on my hifi. The placement and EQ is sweet and clean. Listening to a stereo mix on headphones obviously is a binaural experience not a stereo one by the very nature of headphones themselves, making the imagined soundstage sound less natural and therefore discerning the true placement and EQ of the vocals trickier to assess, especially considering the wide frequency range the instrumentation fills.
I think you should give this album another listen with fresh ears, but only in stereo as nature intended, as I really feel Albini has caught the true tonal essence of the band for the first time. Gone are the usual multilayered ProTool overdubs that the band normally default to, which i feel in some of their past albums has, in my opinion, muddied their sound on occasion. Pairing back their sound from a artificially created, digitally manipulated wall of sound and just recording the actual musicians then laying that on tape has created what I really think is their best sounding album to date. Sometimes less truly is more. I can’t wait to hear what Albini has done for them with the sister album Pyroclasts.
Sounds like a grower for you. Might appear in a 'changed my mind' vid next year
With this review, this is the first metal review of 2019 and the first metal review Anthony has done since he reviewed High on Fire on October 19th, 2018. That is a gap of 6 months 11 days. At this pace, we can look forward to one (1) more metal review in 2019.
I agree just about everything you said on this one. I also really liked the gothic feel to Troubled Air... kinda wish they would've explored that a bit more.
Finding that the more I listen to it though, I really love it and the fact that they’re at such a high point in their career.
I’m so hyped for their next album (coming this year)!
I never really followed the band for as long as Ant but damn I think this is a great album and has made me a fan. Gonna see them live asap
This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time from sunn , I know it’s not for everyone, it is also far from perfect, but god damn the intro of “Between Sleipnir’s breath” sent me to another dimension. I could listen to it on loop 24/7
I actually loved the woman’s voice on the intro song, it’s one of my favorite sunn songs, my favorite is Agertha, I don’t think the guitars and the atmosphere can be deeper and heavier that that
Great job on this review, do you think you could review the new Cranberries album, In The End? I loved the album and it’s heartbreaking that it’ll be the Cranberries’ last after Dolores’ death last year :(
Sunn O))) is the reason why I'm into TND. Thank you for reviewing this, AntFan!

great review. i agree with all your points..... very happy to have a new Sunn0))) album.
Anthony really went in on this one, good review!
Nice review! Agreed on most points. My favorite track is definitely the opener. Yesterday I listened to Life Metal on repeat while mildly tripping on psilocybin mushrooms, sitting alone in a park and looking at the sky, it were some of the most blissful hours of my life. Probably shouldn't do that while listening to Black One or Flight Of The Behemoth :P Salute from The Netherlands!

jeddersfield the artwork is absolutely stunning and I looked up her other work. She’s incredible

I definitely found this album to be phenomenal, it seemed like what we're used to from sunn but happy
Albini helped produce this? I now may have to listen to my first Sunn album.
I have that same Imperial Triumphant shirt. Saw them live three times last year.
great review. thank you very much!! even when I didn't´t share your bit to negative opinion about the vocals of the opener.. I guess they are brillant..absolutely fitting! aaaand there are detailed descriptions missing about the massive genius energy-bow-looping of the chello that guiding to the end in fractal perfection.. ;) but all these details would take your review to infinity.. ;) perhaps there will follow an review about pyroclasts? would be suoerdope! :) drone on and best greetings from Berlin!
I was surprised when Cal began to suck Thanos' chin in Endgame.
It was nuts seeing them live! Good album.
The drone of any music of this style need to placed within a tambir of the instrumentation. Lower tones need to be droned with certain strings muted. Determining what strings are responding to the amplifier is a must treble causing all the highest strings to respond but one to respond. If the horns are in the key of c minor for example the drone of the instrument would be lower in order to bring out the sound.
I hope you'll review the new Possessed, it's surprisingly good
Anthony please do a black metal starter pack

start with the classics, 'accesible' bm will only get you familiar song structures which you can latch on instead of allowing you to actually get into it. start with death metal, then listen to hellhammer/mercyful fate/bathory/celtic frost >darkthrone/immortal/mayhem/burzum/emperor/enslaved/beherit/dissection. This will allow one to understand the music much better than if they started listening to some diluted heterogenous mix of genres.
just listen to Emperor.
Ok, I feel you. But like, where would you want them to even take their sound going forward?
I’d be interested to hear them play 4 nites per song rather than two. Really show that talent they have for playing guitar.
Ive waited since M&D for a Sunn O))) album. And this scratches the itch Kannon didn't. I understand its pretty barebones, but you also get the raw concert experience from this if you listen loud enough. I wrote this before I watched and you hit all the points I just made
The vocals in the first track... Maybe help bring back the attention of the listener? In the middle of all the buzzing and massaging she starts whispering to you?! It gives a momentary illusion of sorts, allowing the next build of sound to be a little more effective. I like the vocals. It makes me feel nostalgic of altar, but not too nostalgic. This album sounds great. I know meat and potatoes are pretty good, and there are many subtle ways to prepare the two. But What does a fungal chick pea sunnO))) burger sound like? Probably pretty good... I just want more from sunnO))).
Props to Anthony for being able to talk for a little over ten minutes about a drone metal album, lol.

It's because Sunn discography isn't as good as their live performances
Only when it comes to timbre, not when it comes to creativity
Just because an album's production is good doesn't mean, it's substantive. You can have an excellent pop album but it could be filled with terrible lyrics or no personality or charisma. The same thing applies to SunnO))) just because the guitar tones are clearer and fuller, doesn't mean it's automatically good.
Key word is *sounding*
Maybe Pyroclasts will be the more experimental counterpart to Life Metal's more straight forward sound.
Either way I loved it, I'd give it an 8 or 9.
Oh that's sick that you reviewed it! I gave it the exact same score and felt about the same way! Didn't think you'd review it! :)
Well he's a huge Sunn O))) fan so it only makes sense that he'd review it.
Hey Anthony, have you considered reviewing The Tallest Man on Earth's new album?

I never really listened to drone metal except dopesmoker but this was pretty great I really liked it.
I like this as much as Sunn O)))'s best albums. The clarity of the recording is impeccable, yes, but the intensity and organic feel of this album make it stand out in the experimentation from White1/2 and beyond. It is a great reminder that Sunn O))) are the best at doom/drone without their previous flourish.
Saw them perform this album Sunday and I highly recommend you go check them out if you like colossal sound and your ears ringing.
Whats really cool is that altar by sunn was released 2 days after i was born
Every album they have there’s a song that’s so good you need to hear it again

Please check out and review Syntheosis by Waste Of Space Orchestra! If you're familiar with Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising, it's their co-operative effort and it's absolutely incredible. One of the most intense musical experiences I've had by just listening to a record in my car.
I was hoping you were going to do this one. I'm still getting used to the brighter, more positive spin on this one. I always liked them as the more evil of the drone bands. Still un-fucking-deniably heavy though!
You should reviewed albums such as I forget where we were or noonday dream by Ben Howard. I think he is a great artist and you should check him out
So what you're saying is, if you're a newcomer to Sunn, this is a great place to start. Baller, I didn't like some of their other stuff so maybe I'll be into this one.

I was really hoping for an 8 or 9 on this one

Sunn O))) are so epicc. This album is like floating in clouds while also flying through an underground cave
Didnt you make your first video about seeing this band live?
Love the content, Melon. I know you must get bands and artists hurled at you all day, so I'm going to continue the trend because why not. I was really surprised when I googled "Anthon Fantano Gus Dapperton" and got no relevant results. While he's not exactly ariel pink, I think he's got some catchy stuff going on. But I'm also a music pleb. Keep it going, Anthony. I don't even fuck with other critics.
