The boy constantly tries to escape death and the idea that his close family/friends are dead, but he finally accepts the death of his loved ones when he takes the monster's hand. Then, the monster replaces some of the people seen in the boy's past memories, representing the death of those people and the boy's acceptance of their death. These are all flashbacks, as the boy has been trapped beneath rubble and is later rescued.

In my opinion, I believe the demon depicts the idea of death. No matter how much the boy seems to avoid it, he can't - it's always following him around. And towards the end where he finally accepts it, death becomes a companion of sorts, until where he is saved from under the rubble.
