  • Getting used to all the nuances of medium format can be quite a challenge by itself, but in addition, figuring out which film stocks go best with certain scenarios can be overwhelming. In this video, I go over some of the most popular films, some of my faovirutes, and when you should shoot each film stock, depending on your subject. From Portra 400, to HP5, to Cinestill 800T, there is a film stock for any type of shooting.
What is your favorite film stock to shoot? I would love to hear your guys' opinion in the comments below!

I literally j picked up Bronica ETRS and put my first roll of portra 400 thru it. I went ahead and picked up a roll of Gold, HP5, Ektar 100, Portra 160 and a roll of 400h. Excited to do some tests. Nice video!

I like portra 160 in my 645 for the smaller grain shooting it at 100 and being able to use 2.8 lenses, 400 in my 67 because I trade larger grain for higher iso... I shoot it at 200. Hp5 in my 67 as it has minimal grain and plenty of sharpness there. In my 645, I love acros 100 at 200 or tmax 400 at 200/400.

Kodak actually re-engineered Tri-X in 2007. The old emulsion had more silver, and had a gritty grainy look, very popular with artistic photographers. The new emulsion has finer grain, and is technically a better film, but I preferred the old Tri X.

I like lomo but it's a pain in the arse to load into a tank sometimes cos of how thin the film is.

Great video. Question what medium format film stock is best to get that cinematic feel not just scenery but for portraits too?

"I only recommend pushing when necessary"
Me who develops hp5+ at 3200 asa: Bet.
Joke but I mainly shoot 135/35mm
I do not have a red filter hnce the high asa numbers,I like grain and pronounced contrast hence why the choice and I am using all ilford chems.
Tri-x is a bit to expensive to me.
I live in Norway which has a lot of forests I like fuji greens but not the horrible green cast it gets when underexposing, then again I do not really like the ektachrome blues.
My dad used to shoot Fuji provia 100 and 400x this was back in mid/late 80s. Fuji Provia 100F is production atm (shame that you guys cant have velvia due to reasons.).
Have a silbera roll of 135 but not developed yet, would post pics but I cant since if I did share a link it'll be deleted.
If you bothered to read this have a good morning/day/evening/night where-ever you guys live

Take a look at SantaColor/ other kodak aerocolor based stocks. They have really cool greens in C41, but awful skin reproduction (it's ok if it's for landscape)
