Hey guys! Sometimes Fatar put weaker springs in these keybeds. So if you remove the weights, be prepared to put the weights back... just in case your keys don't return all the way!
How are they holding up now? I want to do this so bad and remove the weights from the ts12 Keybed, clean my extra squeaky keys and make it a synth action but it looks so damn intimidating and overwhelming…I’m impatient and OCD so thats probably why…Lol
@@joseph395 they are holding up great. Keep all of the screws organized. I use a scribe now, instead of pulling on the ribbon cables. Pay close attention to, and be careful with the aftertouch ribbons. I did one TS12 that had 1 weaker spring like the ZR-76s have. I had to order a TS12 spring off of eBay. It was either that or put the weights back in. I think it is rare this will happen. The most tedious thing is routing the aftertouch ribbon cables. Pay attention to how those are routed.

do you by chance know of anywhere to get a SCSI for the TS series? I’ve been looking on reverb and eBay for the longest but have yet to find one.
@@joseph395 hey man, look on eBay right now. A guy is selling a couple repro SP-4s. (SCSI). I bought one for a TS-10.
@@HankCoffey that’s funny I was actually just about to reply and tell you I just found one on eBay (the same one) Lol at first it wasn’t letting me buy it because he’s in the UK or Poland (it states both) but I messaged him and he adjusted it so it can ship to the USA.. Funny. What the TS-10 boys know is we still have one (or 2) up on ya. The TS-10 has a one of a kind "synth-weighted" action. If you play it lightly, it feels semi-weighted and if you strike the key fast, it feels like synth action. It also has Polyphonic Aftertouch which the TS-12 doesn't have. Good job disassembling and doing your thing though! It kinda made me think of a way to have a weighted keyboard that can change to unweighted by flipping a lever or something. That's never been done, to my knowledge. That would truly be the best of both worlds.
I've been looking for years to find a video showing me the way into my Ensoniq ASR-88. YES! They're the same build. Finally! I am a piano player. However, for this clunky keyboard, making it a fast synth keyboard is doing it a favor. I need to fix a b6 key contact and then I'll pull the weights. What a great idea. Thank you!!! This just saved me from selling it for parts. I did not want to do that to such a great piece.
Hi Kim. Some weighted Fatar keybeds have weaker springs. Making the keys stay collapsed if you remove the weights. Keep your weight racks together. In case you have to put them back in. Most TS-12s have the stronger springs. I don't know about the 88s.

I love my TS-12 so much, I'll never get rid of it. But damn, my keybed is so clacky (thank you Fatar) and the mod wheel has collapsed. I guess it's time to crack it open (I need to change the battery anyway). Thanks for taking the time to do this video.

This procedure is on my schedule to remedy a squeaking sound on my TS12 . The keys squeak when you play them. Great meticulous approach to doing this job! Thanks!

Kt76 is similar. So I didn't take the keys off. I just pull the rods out. After the keybed was separate from the synth. Little by little the weight came off.. Love the sound of the TS12...
Cool, be careful, some Fatar keybeds won't work right with the weights gone. I tried a ZR-76 and the keys stick down. lol

Yes, it takes a while to get the keys out of these. It's not fun. But if you have time, it can be done.
FYI the clips at 7:23 are just ribbon cable clips no biggie if they break but they help keep the ribbon cables in place from bending and getting damaged
This was my first Keyboard disassembly. I'm familiar with the clips now. 👍
Did the same thing, but to my TS-10, also to my SQ-80 and SD-1. Gotta keep the keys and synths clean! : )

Great video! I have an album on the Spotify etc called Ensoniq Adventures that uses the TS12 & SQ1+. Absolutely love the board, but some of the buttons on the front panel have started to fail. Not brave enough yet to try and fix 😞
Did they start failing at the same time? Or 1 at a time? A group would probably be a connection or ribbon cable. Or damaged circuit.
Wow! You just solved my big problem, Hank. Really appreciate how methodical and careful you are. Love my TS-12, but those pesky keys are a pain. I'm gonna pick a day and.... get the lead out. Any idea of how much it weighs since you lost the weights?
Hey Mark! Man, my TS-12 is still real heavy. I haven't weighed anything. I'm going to guess the lead is between 5-10 lbs. I like it better with the lead out.
Eu também tirei o mecanismo e pesei, ele tem 2.95 kg (medida brasileira) e a fonte eu estou estudando uma forma de substituir, pois tem mais 2kg

With your keyboard stuff i was trying to think of things that might get you some decent viewing numbers:-
1. A friendly little competition of some type, making it different from others by you creating a backing track with keyboards instead of guitars.
2." How to play "some famous rock keyboard parts/riffs like...

..there must be tons like this, especialy those massive rock hits everyone knows from the 80s(an area that is one of my weak spots!)
3. You are very good at the ' how to' type videos like maintenance, but maybe a keyboard one connecting to computers and then online. MAYBE if you create your own competition make a video explaining how you did it...
... how you created the chord run, adding drums, then getting it online (very weak area for me!)
4. There must be others!

@@The1stMrJohn I'm doing great JohnJohn. We can pretty much get anything anytime. Except for toilet paper. Thanks for the video suggestions. For now, what I've been doing is trying to make videos of things I'm doing anyway, that would get views. Tomorrow's video will be explaining how to use the internal sequencer on that keyboard. I am doing a bunch of upgrades to it, so the next videos will be showing how to do those upgrades... While that's not the hottest searched topic, it's something I'm doing anyway. There's also going to be a video of me putting the aqua HB back together. I haven't done that yet. When I run out of stuff to do around here, I'll think about making planned YT content. I'm going to make videos that I want to make. I'm not going to make videos that I think people want to see. I'm trying to do both.

all voltages should be fairly low in non-switching keyboard PS units...save organs w/ tube(s). I use E6000 to fix key weights
Thanks, Hank! Was looking for instructions on disassembling a KT88 when I came across this video. Recognized the assembly as being nearly identical so I went for it. Mine was a little easier in that I only had to remove one PC board. I noticed that the springs on the black keys are a slightly yellower color than the silver springs on the white keys. Wonder if they are weaker because of the shorter key length. Just a thought as I don't have a way of testing them. I am keeping my weights in because I want the weighted feel. I took my board apart to try to eliminate the squeak in some of the white keys that is caused when the radiused edge of the prong that depresses the weight rubs across the red felt. Any suggestions?
Thanks man, I don't really know what would help you. I modified my keyboards on here a few years ago. And I haven't worked on any lately. Wish I could help. I'm not an experienced tech.

Very helpful, thanks! I'm going to have to do this to my TS-12. But unless I missed it, it seems like you didn't show exacty how you're prying the keys off. What kind of prying is required at the top of each key? Also, do you notice considerable hiss from the audio output? That's the weakest part of the keyboard for me; I'm wondering if they all have this issue.
Thanks! Don't pry, hold the flat surface of the screwdriver up against a green clip. Push the flat surface against the clip, while pulling up on the key. It's scary, you don't want to break a key. Just don't pry. You are pushing against the green clip.
Be extremely careful doing this... The ribbon cables are 30 years old. Someone messaged me saying some of their keys do not work anymore. That is from damaging a ribbon cable.

Thank you! This video is very helpful. However, I am having a problem getting my sustain pedal to work. I've tried each input jack and I've tried multiple pedals. Any suggestions?
Maybe the footswitch is disabled in system settings somehow?

My Footswitch1 and Footswitch2 are both set to SUSTAIN

Did you ever try modifying the chassis or keyboard to make it weigh less?
I removed the key weights, that is about all you can do.
Been playing my TS-12 for about 20 years. I have 2 keys that started hanging. Just curious, would you disassemble and deep clean, or maybe just try to lubricate around the trouble spots?
I don't know if lubricating without disassembly would do any good? Key pivots are under the faceplate. You can try to hit the weights through the keys. But that would probably soak the bottom panel with oil. I'd take it apart, but man, it's going to take a full day. And it's a pain in the as. I am making it look easy with video editing and speeding the video up. Since this is showing you how to do it, it might not be so bad. I had to figure everything out, so it took longer. Be careful and pay attention to the 2 aftertouch ribbon cables routed under the mod wheel. That is the most important thing in this whole video. They are routed a particular way. That whole corner was the biggest pain of all. Good luck. lol
@@HankCoffey That's not the answer I preferred, but am SO thankful for both the response and your time investment in detailing the disassembly. I'll need to field strip my TS-12 during the next few weeks.

Como eu amo este teclado eu ainda não sei nada da arte porém para eu aprender tenho que pegar um para eu pode aprender mais meu medo e eu pegar um TS12 e ficar na mão sobre as peças de reposição

Olá. Eu fiz esse procedimento e funciona normalmente. Mas a segunda tecla não funciona. E também a cada 8 teclas apertadas 1 tecla não toca. O que pode ser?
Isso é ruim, você está tendo problemas. Provavelmente é um fio danificado. Verifique todas as conexões dos fios. Um pino pode ter dobrado quando conectado. Ou talvez sujeira em conexão. Você precisa ser extremamente cuidadoso com os fios da fita. Meu português pode estar ruim. Eu estou usando um tradutor.

@@2008compositor Sim, me avise. Verifique os 2 cabos que se conectam no centro das teclas. Sob as placas de circuito. É uma conexão ruim ou fio danificado. Verifique se a conexão está limpa e sem sujeira.
@@HankCoffey verifiquei com milímetros a corrente continua dos cabos flet e chicote. Mas não é os fios. Será que pode ser a placa das teclas que sai os cabos flet?
