I was actually involved in the design of Five Guys’ new signage and digital menu system and the main reason they don’t like showing photos is simply because they feel that no matter how good the photography is, it can’t capture just how good their food tastes. In their words “photos of the food doesn’t do the food justice”. It’s also a cost cutting measure in that they don’t have to reshoot anything if there’s a change. There’s also the issue that the idea is it’s completely customisable and loads of combinations. So a photo could either put some people off or be a misrepresentation of the product. The idea of photos on the menu cheapening the product is more related to the classic cheaper fast food chains or Asian food menus with washed out photography.

When there's only a few choices in simple text on the menu of a well-known restaurant, you end up choosing the main/original burger on the menu out of faith that it's going to be good because it's what kept them in business. And the customers do find it good. For returning customers, it simplies their cravings from "what type of burger do i want (cheeseburger, quarter pounder, hamburger, etc)" to "I want a Five Guys burger"
Ngl its entirely justified imo. I'm not a fan boy of either; I've had five guys once in my life, mcdonalds I have maybe 2-3 times a year. The £11 five guys bacon cheese burger I had on my one visit was vastly better than anything I've ever had from mcdonalds, completely worth the higher price tag from what I ate.
With five guys you can customize your burger. So its allways worth it since you get exactly what you like and the topping dont cost extra so you can get 3 sauces and all the toppings. Also they give a shit ton of fries extra so your really full and satisfied. And free refills if you order a drinking cup which is absolutly not common in Germany, I really love that!

The real reason for no pictures is the fact that five guys started as a very cheap and minimalist company with as high of a focus on quality food as possible to get word about their establishment out through high reputation. They kept red and white checkered patterns and had a very limited menu to help achieve this cheaply. This is only the broadest overview, but hopefully it will help
from a five guys employee - they actually don't show the pictures because every store is modelled exactly the same as the very first five guys restaurant - and they didn't have pictures on that original menu

They pay like $1.50 more than other fast food places, they have buns shipped in from first-party bakeries, and all the ingredients are higher quality and never frozen. Whether you think it's worth it is up to you, but they def have way higher costs than other burger joints.
