Hmmmm... my history of my Greece is completely different... under the Italian occupation a fair amount of Greek women were raped... a fair amount of Greek children were beaten... a fair amount of Greek seniors were killed... a fair amount of Greek churches, shops, and homes were pillaged... a fair amount of Greek Jews were taken by Italian soldiers were deported to their deaths. The Italians were as cruel as their German counterparts... sometimes more so. Greek women caught engaging in "horizontal collaboration" with German, Italian, and Bulgarian soldiers after the war met reprisals... so very highly any Greek woman (especially her shared hatred of the occupying forces) would even flirt with an Italian soldier knowing what is in store. The Greeks would have never joined that party. And there was a curfew, so an outing like that would have never, let alone Greeks wanting to party with their Italian occupiers. However lovely Penelope Cruz's character, as a Greek peasant girl living on a remote island, away from the world, would never have known how to Tango... let alone know that the dance of Tango ever existed. What a sh*t, director's licensed movie... just as pathetic as the book... and actually quite an insult to real Greeks.

You are right this movie is made about ordinary people in wartime ...I found the Tango dance scene so beautiful then been danced outdoor made it more romantic with no fuss at all...I dance Argentine Tango for about 16 years and I see people dancing Tango with no passion at all and they study the dance.. In this movie it is danced with such a beautiful natural way ........Quote...Great Tango dancers are not great because of their technique_they are great because of their passion ......Very special movie indeed....
The way Antonio looks at Pelagia when she is dancing is priceless! it's so obvious that she danced for him and only for him, beautiful scene!
