That has more to do with the power ratings on each engine, Cummins has low power and high power engines for trucks maybe you are comparing a 400 hp Cummins to a 500hp Detroit
I run a ISX 600 with 2050 tq and flat out eat 99.9% of the trucks out there from coast to coast weekly. We do heavy maintenance schedule oil at 10-12k and PM's always early. Just hit 800K and oil samples show minimal wear. We are hoping the three trucks will in our fleet will hit 1.5 mil each before inframes.
Great job on video. I have a 8-71 Never had a problem with her it's in my 1971 truck............... Everyone what for it.. But really just love the old Detroits, I allso own a 3-53 In a piece of equipment.
Great video and a place to call if anyone had a question before purchasing their unit. But for me today’s ISX are disposable engine that will visit any repair shop ten times more then if you run a DD15. Maintenance is key and for maintenance you will need to go to repair shops but Detroit engines fails a whole lot less then today’s isx engines. Now before cummins was my number one go to engine but not after 2012 models came out.
New platforms usually have bugs to work out. The latest model engine seem to be doing a little better. Thanks for the feedback and yes maintenance is key.

I drive a cascadia with a DD15 , so far NO issues with engine , only time had an issue was the emmissions only two times had a check engine ligh on becuase of that , so far 280,000 miles on it ..👍
Dd13 dd15 best in the world runs forever and if you have basic experience with mechanical work you can basically do 90% of the work on it theres parts everywhere and they cost less if your just starting off in trucking dd13 or dd15 frightliner is the way too go and if you own a fleet its also the way too go cuz of the price on parts
I’ve had both engines. The DD15 is really smooth and quiet with great pickup. Any grade over 3-4% and a similar spec’d ISX will out pull the Detroit. The best motor I had was a 530hp ISX in a 2005 T2000, it would pull just about anything on a grade except a big Cat. I changed oil every 20k on all of them, and also added 1 gallon of 80-90 hypoid gear oil in the motor. In the mountains Cummins, on the plains Detroit.
The ISX is much more mechanic-friendly, the conventional front gear train gives a lot of space to work for air compressors and fuel pumps. The turbo is out in the open and almost all the fuel and coolant hoses are braided banjo vs plastic clip-connects. If you are wrenching on your own truck I would not even consider the DD15.
I ran the DD15 for a number of years in company rigs, there was a lot of things I liked about the detroit's but there was a lot I didn't like either. Company has a yard full of blown up dd15's tho all rods through the block. I own my own truck now with a cummins ISX in it and has been happy with my 650hp 2150 tq for pulling 140,000lb fully loaded weight around. Plenty of guys i know personally with the cummins have actually NEVER been to the shop in 600k miles for def related issue's, some are getting close to the million mark with out a def problem. probably because of the weight we're pulling keeps everything hot. But with the DD15 I was lucky to make 3 weeks with out DEF issues. My truck's deleted so I don't have that problem.
Add arch oil to reduce wear nd tear then yu can probably make it to 1.5.. adding a keyworth with a n14 to the fleet next cnt wait to feel her. My mechanic just rebuilt the engine 🙃
My truck (208 kw T800) has the ISX 485. The engine has 30,000 miles and is on its second turbo and fuel lift pump. That being said, it’s a powerhouse. I don’t have any trouble running Lookout Pass on I90 at the Idaho/Montana border at 63mph (darned governor) @75k gvw, with just a 10 speed. That being said, I’m looking at another truck with the DD15, so this video is a good comparison
If he's comparing the x15 to the dd15 I don't even think it's close..but if it's the the isx 08 tru 2016 then he's spot on..I personally think from all the research I've done on the x15 it's miles ahead
We run Heavy Haul in Michigan. Our company was all Cat prior to Acert. After all that we switched to Cummins. We had good luck until the 2009 isx. Our company then switched to Detroit. Freightliners and Western Stars. My boss hated Cummins that bad until last year. We have 12 Dd16 that are garbage. Shitty mpg and lack of power. Needless to say we Got the New x15 565 and will stay that way. The Detroit’s were good until they hit 200k once they hit that mark they lived at the Dealer
I personally feel that the dd15 is the better engine due to the fact ive seen a lot of isx engines with blown turbo's, blown egr coolers and of course fuel pumps
Yep, i've watched 2 companies go bankrupt over ISX and X15 motors, blowing EGR coolers and Turbos, which usually resulted in total motor destruction for one reason or another. I'm and O/O now and run Volvo D13's
@@TATEXPRESSINC Love it, look at getting a second truck, with the new D13TC motor. I've had all other makes and engines, including the X15. I will only run the 2019+ D13's now. I'm also based in Western Canada, and do a lot in the mountain's/PACNW, and the D13 impresses me. In the US we run 80 000lbs gross, in Canada we run 102 000lbs gross.
Weve had engine problems on 2 of our dd15s one at 800k and the other at 1mil miles. A big issue is drivers pressing the override button when the engine is trying to protect itself for low water or oil. On both trucks it was cracked liners that cause water to go into the oil
I have to stick with Cummins, I know how to work on them, know how to drive one and Cummins supplies everything to the owner that the shops supply to the mechanics in regards to manuals and parts. And the Cummins Inline 6 reader with the Insite software is readily available on pllaceds like eBay for around $250, if you own a Cummins, you need this diagnostic tool. The fuel pumps on the CM-2250 and newer are well known. They need to be rebuilt at 400,000 miles. Just a fact of life with these motors. And that includes the newest ones out here. Yes, they are big red crybabies, but once you understand what is going on under the hood, and drive and maintain it properly, they will go the distance. To do that, you need regular old school PM service routines, 10,000 to 18,000 miles depending on usage and conditions. Regular EGR Tuneups and do not lug the motor! That is the cause of the liners breaking loose, maintain 1500 rpm in pulls and when under a heavy load. Make sure the truck is geared properly for the application. You do not want to be running the mountains with 3:20 gearing when a 3:70 ratio would be more appropriate. Just me, but I like my Cummins.
There's the problem with the dd15 you have to buy a Freightliner to get it and Freightliner is a garbage the Cummins x15 comes in Pete and Kenworth those trucks are better than a Freightliner so I guess I'll go with the Cummins
Actually Pete’s and kenworths are shit. Old school drivers like them because they think they’re better, but in reality our T680s are the most unreliable of the 3 brands we use the other is Freightliner and LT international w/ Cummins. I definitely like the international engine the best, it’s noticeably stronger and and sounds better, but the cascadias are like airbuses interiors. Way nicer. I’d buy a freightliner strictly for the interiors and prices & availability of parts and service center. Paccar aren’t as nice as you think.
after reading the comments it seems like the experience between these two engines is all over the map. Some have good experiences and some have bad experiences. Many variables may be involved between owners and how often and what type of maintenance is done, how the rigs are being driven (if the driver is beating on it or not) what and where they are hauling, etc.. who knows.
Good day. I’m working on a 2012 KW with a isx15. Truck code keeps saying to service the Dpf and the Scr system I hard them both cleaned. Put all new temp sensors and out put Nox. Still saying the same and won’t regen. I’m leaning towards the ECM that controls it. There seems to be a lot of codes for the same issue. Pins and plugs look very good at the ECM. Do you think it could be the problem ? One code says the engine exhaust temp is -40 also. And I replaced it too. Nothing changed. Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated.
I have a 2022 Cascadia. DD15. Brand new. Only 50 miles when I got it. Gets about 7.1mpg based on the 7k miles I’ve driven it so far. It’s pulling a flatbed where I’m more often than not, gross weight around 78k. I have 8 batteries, Freightliner calls it ParkSmart, in the truck instead of the usual 4. So I never have to idle the truck when I’m taking my 10hr. When I take a 34, I’ll keep the Park Smart running but it will usually need to be recharged before the 34 is up. So I’ll idle the truck for 3 hours a week at most. Just my brief experience owning a Cascadia.
We run Volvo’s d13 frightliner dd13. But I understand we are getting a few international with Cummins in then. Not to wild about that. Do like the Detroit.
Larry, on the late models the engineers seem to be working out the bugs. Yes, Detroits are solid engines. All depends on the maintenance. Thanks for watching and make sure to hit that sub button.
I’ve had 2015 isx engines , they all burned oil, needed dpfs cleaned at 120.000. Then 2016 dd15s, needed nothing more than oil changes up to 350 k , then needed dpf cleaned. Both engines were idled all the time. Used by OTR drivers idled every night. DD15 is way better. I dont know about the lastest isx 15 never had one
I remember the days when the driver understood his truck what it could do Now a days the office makes sure you need to sit in a truck and struggle thanks 👍
Ive had Cummins products more than anything else, but they were old school pre emission units. The ISX style engines gave me nothing but grief because of the emission controls. They are rough running units, sound like locomotives as they pull. I like the sound and feel....it proves that it's doing something. The DD15 feels soft despite having higher compression and turbo compounding, but i believe its all in the tuning. With the right tune the DD15 will out pull an ISX.
I own Volvo d12 at 950,000 I did overhaul now I will drive it until it blows up then I am getting Cascadia with DD15 and 10speed manual. You can keep your automatic I dont want it. I want to be in control of power
Thanks for sharing the video. A friend who is a mechanic recently told me how bad the DD15 engine is and how he does not recommend that engine. They seem to be similar in many ways.
I really appreciate Comparisons. I work for a fleet right now and the oil change intervals are 50,000 miles which I always thought was way too far better to change it sooner than later! I have a question for you is there any additives that you would use in order to clean out the engines to help maintain them? Especially I hear they get clogged because of the DEF system when you are Idling a lot!
Thanks for watching be sure to subscribe. It is not recommended to add any additives in the DEF System. If the system is clogged than the root cause should be found. Yes, high idle time will cause excessive soot build up and I would recommend an oil analyst if they are doing 50k oil change intervals.
TAT Express Inc. Thanks so much I will definitely do that! And yes I did subscribe. What about additives to the fuel or oil do you recommend anything like that?
@@americanjustice2722 I use Edt every day diesel treatment. Can't tell last I recently tbh. Yes high idling cause soot build but overall the diesel we use now is trash lack lubrication. Shit burn like a candle. Wiry the additive burns way more cleaner. I had 3 isx15 nd 1 mx13. Drove a dd13 one time in a Volvo. Gets good mileage. Opinion keep maintenance on point use additive to increase octane. Also use archoil nano additive. Works wonders. Truck sounds like a car.
Coolest additive ive used in a toyota echo is NMF no more friction' but its designed for semis. It reduces vibration and they put a water jug on the truck and after adding the water stops vibrating substantially... thought it was snake oil but its been used in racing for years and its very interesting stuff. Runs amazing in a car, would put it in company freightliner but.. its pricey. Works tho i swear. Reduces friction and demagnetises steel buildup in oil so it gets flushed through the filter in about 10 mins. Dont ask me how it works, witchcraft or some such as the inventor is some crazy middlestern chemist that invented it.
Thanks for the information but I assume you are talking Tractors but what about smaller engines for Box Trucks like Freightliner M102. Would these comparisons be the same? Thanks!
My dd15 has about 710,000 miles (had it shoot a year). But I found out last week I need an overhaul. Coolant is leaking from cylinder 5 and it’s leaking into my oil causing low oil pressure. Is this something that just happened randomly?
If it's not a 60 Series, don't buy a trash ass Detroit! Cummins ISX can be taken ANYWHERE for service or repairs. The junk DD13/15 can only go back to Freightliner. I'm driving on for a buddy right now. The original engine blew up, the used replacement engine blew up & had to be rebuilt. All of this in 18 months & it's been tuned to 550/1850. It still doesn't pull for shit. The Cummins goes all the way to 605/2050 & pulls like a freight train! Gimme the ISX any day of the week.
@@TATEXPRESSINC Nope, it was bone stock before it was rebuilt. These emission engines are throw aways. You can't give me a new Detroit! IF I buy a 2011+ truck, it'll only be a Cummins.
My friend have 4 trucks with Cummins ISX 15 and they are a real headache . All months trucks need to go shop. Specially for DEF and DPF system . I personally do not recommend Cummins isx they have a lot of fails like : injector tip , 7th injector ( dpf) , oil pan leaking every 200k miles , sensors fail , at 450k miles turbo goes bad . It happen exactly the same things to my friend’s truck . I prefer DD15 , Volvo D13 over Cummins ISX 15 Or go with new Cummins x15 they fix all nightmare with ISX15 .

Twin, I appreciate your input. In the video I am talking about the ISX15
How did you get 600hp?

Great video and a place to call if anyone had a question before purchasing their unit. But for me today’s ISX are disposable engine that will visit any repair shop ten times more then if you run a DD15. Maintenance is key and for maintenance you will need to go to repair shops but Detroit engines fails a whole lot less then today’s isx engines. Now before cummins was my number one go to engine but not after 2012 models came out.
New platforms usually have bugs to work out. The latest model engine seem to be doing a little better. Thanks for the feedback and yes maintenance is key.

I had isx 2250 with Volvo 13 sp best truck ever owned cause 485, 1850. I have decided runs Nor Cal to so cal if u been to Cali u no Grape vine it's steep hills. Avg 40-45mph with close to 79-80k if u gonna buy Cummins make sure replace camshaft after 500k
Sohc u get best torque but less hp from
Dd15 dohc more HP but Less Torque
Trust me I've driven both Freightliner and volvo.
By far Cummins been best choice for me

Cat pulls the best
Detroit is the least thirsty
Cummins does booth good
Cat 15,13 3608, red top n 14. Detriot 60. All overhaul. 750 to million engines
Thanks for sharing
This a great comment 👍
I 100% agree
Troy, thanks for the input. You may be right about truck running hotter temps could be reason for no faults. Make sure to hit that sub button.
Driving truck is not for speeding, Best thing as fleet owner is maintenace and emission cost. Thank you for good info.
We have seen good ISX15 and DD15. A good maintenance schedule is key.
Thanks for watching. Be sure to hit the sub button.

Yep, i've watched 2 companies go bankrupt over ISX and X15 motors, blowing EGR coolers and Turbos, which usually resulted in total motor destruction for one reason or another. I'm and O/O now and run Volvo D13's
Dues, how are you liking your Volvo D13
Sounds like driver problems not engine problems
FWIW anecdotally I have seen a lot of comments from DD15 users that oil issues can arise. That is the biggest knock I've seen on this engine.
Volume is too low, your close intro has a higher volume. The info on both engines is good and thank you for sharing!
It’s ur cheap Samsung 😝
Parts availability is way better on a Cummins. Down time needs to be considered in that aspect especially in todays supply chain world

Ur doing a great service to humanity
I’m looking into purchasing a 2010 kenworth t800 it has a Cummins isx. What are your thoughts on the isx? Is it a good motor?
We Bought ur old location ! One on Wilmer tx finn road ! Heard a lot of good review about tat keep it up! Take care !
Paccar aren’t as nice as you think.
lol this comment was a pile of garbage.. Fuck paccar garbage
You can thank the Germans for that. They bought (and ruined) Detroit Diesel and they bought (and ruined) Freightliner, and ditto for Western Star.
I have the dd16 in my 4900 and it’s been over all a great motor
I drive a deleted isx this thing is a beat powers through mountains no major repairs for a year since I’ve been driving just minor maintenance

About maintenance
Or better no maintenance..

The dpf filter...
Thanks for watching
heard the DD15 series 60. isn’t a bad choice engine for starters
What do you recommend to look for in buying one. ☝️
after reading the comments it seems like the experience between these two engines is all over the map. Some have good experiences and some have bad experiences. Many variables may be involved between owners and how often and what type of maintenance is done, how the rigs are being driven (if the driver is beating on it or not) what and where they are hauling, etc.. who knows.
A good maintenance schedule will help.
Great video. I hope my series 60 lasts forever...lol. But I would prefer dd15 if forced to choose.

We are looking at taking an ISX for a somewhat good deal. AS long as they are dependable motors, I think I'll bite.

I’m thinking to get Cascadia and there are two options: with DD15 and ISX15. Is new cascadia with Cummins15 engine 450 hp, 2.85 ratio - good deal ?
I remember the days when the driver understood his truck what it could do
Now a days the office makes sure you need to sit in a truck and struggle thanks 👍
It’s worth mentioning the doc/scr in a Detroit can even up costing around 20k.

🤣 My mechanic told me not to buy anything else but a D-troit
then some say to only buy pacar and others to only buy cummins .. it's all the same 💩
What does a after treatment include
Are the d13 a good motor
Hands.down Detroit DD engines are reliable still perfer Cummins bcuz the ease of maintenance.
"Be sure to hit the sub button" is a bit redundant in the comments. We get it. Great vid.

What are the recommendations for Volvo dd15 diagnostic tool?
Lol I'm still running my 3406 425 b model cat. 1,349,000 miles. Keep your Cummins and detroits.
I've seen more trucks with the hood open with a Cummins than a Detroit
That's not only because of the engine. Radiator goes bad too
It’s because there’s a million more isx’s
Fleet guys are abusing basically anything they touch
After working on trucks for 12 years and now running a c15 CAT; I wouldn’t even think about running a dd15. Cummins walks all over them all day long
How do u figure the ISX has a single over head cam when the side of the motor says dohc?
That's what I just asked him because I had a volvo with dohc
2010 came with a single overhead cam with the high pressure common rail fuel system .
If I was looking for a pre-emissions engine do you have any recommendations?
Thanks for the information but I assume you are talking Tractors but what about smaller engines for Box Trucks like Freightliner M102. Would these comparisons be the same? Thanks!

My dd15 has about 710,000 miles (had it shoot a year).
But I found out last week I need an overhaul. Coolant is leaking from cylinder 5 and it’s leaking into my oil causing low oil pressure.
Is this something that just happened randomly?
If coolant is not maintained, internal corrosion will occur
TAT Express Inc. thank you. Have you seen this issue before?
If it's not a 60 Series, don't buy a trash ass Detroit! Cummins ISX can be taken ANYWHERE for service or repairs. The junk DD13/15 can only go back to Freightliner. I'm driving on for a buddy right now. The original engine blew up, the used replacement engine blew up & had to be rebuilt. All of this in 18 months & it's been tuned to 550/1850. It still doesn't pull for shit. The Cummins goes all the way to 605/2050 & pulls like a freight train! Gimme the ISX any day of the week.
George, thanks for watching and appreciate your input. Was the tune used on both DD15 engines before failure?

I prefer DD15 , Volvo D13 over Cummins ISX 15
Or go with new Cummins x15 they fix all nightmare with ISX15 .
What did kenworth say about automatic transmission service and rearend service

I love my Cummins isx its a work horse parts just are just expensive
How is an overhaul + labor for a DD15 cheaper than a fuel pump + labor for an isx
I'm looking at a Walmart truck with isx15 and tripack. It has 608k miles, but asking $30k. Think it's a good deal or will it cost more in the end than a dd15 with similar miles for $33k? Both are Walmart Freightliners and both have tripacks.

Found your channel couple weeks ago. Really helpful, thank you! I have a 2016 DD15 and do my PMs every 15000. Is that over kill?
TNG64, That is not over kill. What type of oil are you using?
Really appreciate your quick response!! I use Mobile Delvac 1300 Super saw 15w-40.
SAE
@@TNG64 I just switched to Mobil delvac from rotella in my Cat, was having issues with evaporative loss and read a few folks saying delvac does better. Will have to wait and see. That's the oil change interval I do too though: 15,000. Anything past that and I get leery about it still being able to do its job effectively lol.
What about an ISX dated from 2006? I’m heading to look at a 9900 eagle with a build date of June 2006, only has 460k original miles on engine, as well as the rest of the chassis. How was that engine? I believe it’s the CM870 then.
ISX has issues with Crank Shaft. DD15 has higher after treatment replacement cost due to one box parts are all one.
How much is more, for the Cummins?. And how much is more for parts?
