  • In this video I will show you the best way to learn the beautiful and ancient Celtic language of Irish - just like a native speaking child would through immersion and by picking up words and phrases depending on the situation. This is the only way to learn a language and improve your confidence.
    Video translation-
    Dia duit agus fáilte, éist liom le do thoill, ceart go leor? - Hello and welcome, listen up please - ok?
    Cad é seo- what is that
    foirgneamh is dócha - a building I guess
    Ah feicim, foirgneamh na scoile - ah I see, a school building
    An maith leat scoil? - Do you like school
    Is maith liom é - I like it
    Ní maith liom é - I don’t like it
    Ábhar - subject, Ceap - to think
    Cén t-ábhar is fearr leat? - What subject do you prefer?
    Eolaíocht - Science
    Is breá liom é, is í an eolaíocht an t-ábhar is fearr liom - I love it, Science is my favourite subject
    I ndáiríre?, cén fáth? - really? Why?
    Ceapaim go bhfuil sé an-spéisiúil - I think it’s very interesting
    Clog - clock
    Cá bhfuil sé? - where is it?
    Féach ansin, ar an mballa - look there, on the wall
    Ceart go leor agus cén t-am é? - Ok and what time is it?
    Ceathrú tar éis a trí - a quarter past 3
    Ar fheabhas, tá sé in am imeacht - wonderful, it’s time to leave
    Is fíor sin - that’s true
    Slán go fóill - bye for now.

    You are too right!! My father, although fluent in Vietnamese, taught English to the Vietnamese after the war in Johnson’s Vietnamization Program. After the first day all the teaching was done in English. Humourous aside: everyone always knew which Vietnamese students were taught by my father because they all had an Irish accent! lol

    I'm absolutely loving everything I'm learning about Ireland - mythology, history, the language. I'm British but can call myself an Irish citizen now, thanks to my late Grandfather. I want to soak up everything I can about this draíochtúil place.

    What level is this aimed at? The speed between concepts is very fast. The icons didn't help me to know what you were saying either. Maybe it's not for beginners

      The technique is applicable to all levels, but the words used, and the pace of speech here, are more oriented towards beginners.
      I think the idea is that this reduces the interference of one's native language in the learning of the target language. It might help to have optional subtitles or something, but even if you don't get 100% of everything on the first try, you might be surprised how well you do after a couple tries. And you don't have to understand every sentence or every word 100% before moving on to the next. In one of my in-person language classes, we did exercises similar to this (two native speakers conversing at a beginner-friendly pace, and the students writing down everything they heard as they were able to), and you get better at it quickly. And maybe you get only 50% of something one week, but then even just two weeks later understand much more. Exercises like these might be best if combined with other exercises, of course.

    Hello there. Thank you for this! Are there any longer videos, or stickers, or flash cards you can point me towards? I'm 32 and living in America, because I'm American - but Irish makes my soul calm so I spend time daily thinking about Ireland. I love speaking Irish and want to speak it more often. Thanks sir! go raibh maith agat a dhuine choir!

    Fáilte ar ais Dean! Is breá liom na físeáin seo. I would love to see more like this and I've also been thinking about how cool it would be to have an Irish language channel similar to Dreaming Spanish or Hola Spanish here on YT. I think you and Molly from Gaeilge i Mo Chroí are on the right track with her as Gaelige videos and your Learn Irish like a baby videos. Maybe you could do something like that with her and/or other teachers. It's something I would be willing to pay for if there is enough content.

    I like the layout of the videos and the content, but it's wrong to teach people to pronounce things without the correct consonant and vowel sounds. The fundamentals of the language come from consonant / vowel modification. Sure, it's boring and 'not fun' but it's critical. You can't make simple plurals without it, a learner can't advance their knowledge of the language without it. I also think it's a diservice to many of your viewers because many viewers from Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, China etc. all have these sounds and functions in their own languages. If we'd call it out to them, then they'd be able to fly with Irish! For example, a Russian would be able to replicate the difference between Cathar vs. Cathair (кагар, кагарь) no problem! the only difference is the sound in the 'r', but in the videos, that is not being called out! To further illustrate the point about these sounds, it's important to differentiate between fóill (as in slán go fóill) and fol (bird moulting). Similarly, scol = a shout out, vs. scoil = a school.

    To be honest, you shouldn't be learning your own language. You should pick it up at home as a baby. No point blaming the educational system, the government, or the English. It's solely the parents' responsibility what language their child will speak. My brother picked up English by watching cartoons. That was 30 years ago. Now we have the internet and endless resources of content in every language.
    If your parents didn't give you this option and you decide to learn a foreign language, the same method applies: watch cartoons / films on the target language, supplied with grammar and vocab learning. The only way to learn a language is in action. Otherwise it will be just another school subject that you forget as soon as the exam is over.

      You are either deliberately or accidentally misunderstanding the problem. How can a parent teach their child Irish when they can barely string a few words together?

    • @buskergirl
      @buskergirl 11 місяців тому

      @@LearnIrish Never said the parent has to teach them. I said it's their responsibility to provide the option for their kids, ie instead of teletubbies, make them watch Irish content. Or French, Japanese, Spanish, whatever language they want their child to pick up. The technology is there, but an infant will not search the internet for Irish fairy tales, the parent should.

    • @LearnIrish
      @LearnIrish  11 місяців тому +10

      Unless the parents make an effort to live through Irish then it's pointless. Putting a 3 year old with little to no Irish in front of a screen with people talking a different language to the one they hear at home and then hoping that they suddenly become bilingual is just wishful thinking. As I have tried to explain you either don't understand how a language is taught or you're just unable to understand the logic.
      Sure if it was that easy then I would be fluent in French in 6 months.

      This kind of ignorant and arrogant attitude is what put me off Irish in school. The most confident comments are always from people who have the least amount of knowledge.

    • @LearnIrish
      @LearnIrish  11 місяців тому +4

      Resorting to insults means you have lost the argument. Is that the best you can do? Go back to blaming teachers? Cop on.
