When we do it, we generally have one that is a year old and one that is fresh from this year and you can pick from whichever you want. The older can is generally really bloated and smells a lot worse and tastes more fishy. Once a year is enough tho!

well, the same goes with sweden. don't trust sweedish delicacies, not ven when it's candy" . i am serious, have you tried sweedish candy? lol.

Kyde and Eric you said and I quote "It tasted like a shit" I'm wondering when the last time was when you tasted "a shit" lol. I've seen this type of fish before on the food network and the hype is a 30 and the build up to the smell is off the charts kinda like the durian fruit they won't allow it on bus or train. You have my respect Kyde I would never try a lot of foods that smell or no smell l'm not the taster. I think after this if you can do it maybe I can try others. I love watching yer videos thank you for entertaining us 99.9% of us all just love you 2. Good luck in the future I'll never stop watching these. To bad a tv channel doesn't pick up on this and give you yer own show you 2 should try I'd watch and I'm sure yer audience would be in the millions. Peace out love & respect to you both

I was searching for videos from foreigners tasting our Swedish food and found your channel. Sometimes it's hard to describe why you find something "good", but I found it here. I suspect it's the incredibly genuine vibe you have - the down-to-earthness that people otherwise (for whatever reason) try to hide away.
The first video of yours I saw was the one where you ate at Pelikan in Stockholm, and without seeing it in the feed I knew that these two wouldn't leave the country without trying surströmming. Being from northern Sweden it's sort of in my DNA, but although I probably eat it a couple of times every year, it's not really something I lay at night dreaming about. That said... You are an absolute boss Kyde. While I can see quite a few people (those who like fishy food) manage a surströmming-roll with all the condiments, you actually ate some directly from the can without even a blink. I'll have to petition the king to grant you honorary citizenship or something.

Kyde is possibly secretly a Swedish 'norrlänning', a northerner. But for sure you should have gotten the one with the wolf, it is hella smelly, haha. We opened it up under water and everything and the whole house smelled like death. Some of them come pre-cut to make it easier, so when I saw you pick that one I was like 'oh no, that's going to be just whole fishes isn't it'. It is good with some cheese as well, and red onions. I actually like surströmming more than the pickled herring. :) my boyfriend, Japanese, is super excited to try this when we go to Sweden to visit this summer. We don't really eat this where I'm from either, and funny enough the only time I had it, I tried it at a friends house in Japan.

Kyde, you're so hard core! I haven't tried anything nearly as challenging as some of the stuff you've had, but I've tried some pretty unusual stuff. Like you, I never flinch. If you're going to put yourself through the trauma, may as well come out looking like Chuck Norris. Eric, given your dislike of fishy flavors, it was definitely badass of you to get that into your mouth! I'm really loving your European adventures! Thanks for sharing! 😊

This is beautiful. When Eric said you'd gone to a park I was a little worried the police might come arrest you for stench disturbance or something. And nice on the tunnbröd! That stuff is awesome. they have a thing called a tunnbrödsrulla that has hot dogs, mashed potatoes and coleslaw in it instead of surströmming which is amazing. But yeah, Eric, I think you had the normal reaction whereas Kyde's just a badass. When I lived up north my friends kept daring me and I never got around to it, but my landlord in Uppsala would open cans to troll his friends so I know the smell all too well xD

Surströmming is salty as it is from the time when salt was used as a way to preserve food.
The "myth" is that a Merchant was trying to save some money (as salt was expensive) and used as little salt as he could to preserve his fish and meat, but one batch had too little and it started to ferment. He then managed to scam a village somewhere by selling them this rotten herring which he otherwise would just have to throw away as it was fermented. The next time he went there the village asked him if he had any more of that fish because they really liked it and so a tradition was born.
Again, this is a myth and story so no claims to the validity or truth behind it but that is the origin story I was told.

+Baby laughing I'm not sure which sliding cabinets you are talking about. There were huge sliding door closets built into the apartment. Everything else we basically got at Ikea. They can ship things if needed, and it's not super expensive. -E

Should've gone with Oskar's Surströmming or Röda Ulven Surströmming instead of the rum herring thing. My bet is that's what is different.

The background to surströmming is that once Sweden was very poor, and salt was very expensive. When the herring needed conserving somehow, the people doing the conserving added only enough salt to keep the fish from getting inedible. The smell was apparently not seen as a problem.
And while many foreigners seem to consider the smell something worthy of military weapons, I am unfazed by it. But then, I am Swedish...
