All i can say is woah!!!, i thought style wars was the first proper graffiti doco about NYC. I was mistaken. This footage is simply incredible. Just to think that 40 years ago, these kids had the city in the palms of their hands. I especially found it interesting that the cops said we target muggers and rapists and don't even care about graffiti. Boy how times change for the worse :( Aleast graffiti is worldwide now and will never die, even if the subway scene does. Anyways massive respect from Melbourne, Australia !!!!

malt 79 No Doubt. In the 70's & 80's...the city and subways were so bombed, it didn't really matter if one more tag or piece was hit up. It was urban decay and the crime rate was so high, the last thing people & cops were concerned about was graffiti. It gave NYC character and it was more tolerated. The city was like a huge ton of fun...you could do almost anything within reason and nobody hassled you. Now, we live in a police state. But at least they can't take our memories away! :) Peace from New York City!

This clearly illustrates that Graffiti was alive and well before the term Hip Hop was coined. Most writers listened to Funk, a little Mo-town and mostly Rock! The only disco was Saturday Night Fever type music...take it to the bank...

@@OGGOAT23 You are mistaken, there was no hip hop in 73' (if there was, it had too small of an audience for it to be noticed). The subway trains were completely bombed inside and out before the term hip hop was even coined. I was born and bred and live in Manhattan (since the 60's) and I grew up and went to school with most of the Rock Steady Crew originals. But, this was way before even break dancing was being invented. The only music they had and what most people listened to was mostly rock, a little funk and some Motown. The only disco being played was groups like The Bee Gees via Saturday Night Fever. There was no hip hop and even in the movie (Saturday Night Fever) you could see how much graffiti was on and in the subways. The music being played in this documentary was basically funk. Otherwise, you'd hear at least one hip hop song. But, hip hop was not even on the map yet, even in 76'.Peace!!

I mean, I can still feel the rising sun on my shoulders and the smell of wet paint, strange places I would never have seen if I did not do this. @@Spencerrojas 99% of the city and trains are graffiti free and it gets buffed within hours. The only place you might still illicit real graffiti is on the roof tops along the elevated trains, like along Jerome ave, on the 4 train, in Da Bronx...for example. But, as far as regular street and subway graffiti, the shit is dead nowadays. You can walk up and down Broadway and you're lucky if you see a tag that's more than a day old. Legal graffiti, is not graffiti...its graffiti art. Real graffiti is more or less dead in NYC now. But, there was a time when city was completely bombed! Everywhere!

Graffiti originated during the caveman days, even King Tut's tomb had graffiti from people that visited his tomb, before America was even discovered. People have been writing on stuff since spray paint was invented as well. So in 1964, if someone wrote 'The Beatles Rule' on a wall with spray paint, in Idaho for example, that's called graffiti. Look at some of the Barrios in LA, all you saw was graffiti in the 50's. Watch West Side Story filmed in 1961, you'll see "graffiti." Have you heard of the movie "American Graffiti" it took place in 1963. Spraypaint has been around since 1949, we all know people used it to illegally write their names (and other words)...that would be defined as graffiti . Sure Cornbread wrote his name on a wall with spray paint. But, he certainly didn't invent graffiti. He's a good dude though.

Actually , graffiti & hip hop DO NOT go hand in hand. Movies like Beat Street, Wild Style, Style Wars confused people. The trains were bombed long before the term hip hop was even coined. When graffiti first started, the majority of writers were of the Hippie type. Mostly Rock music was listened to, along with a little Funk (this is not the original music soundtrack). The only Disco that was around was groups like The Bee Gees, etc;. Just watch Saturday Night Fever to get the idea. How much hip hop was in the movie The Warriors. The trains were bombed and it was all Rock music. I grew up with all of this and for some reason people think graffiti has something to do with hip hop. It's understandable, due to these misleading movies. Peace! 1Love! You're welcome for this documentary brother.....

great for you too respond but im from coney island brooklyn born and raised i know all about the warriors lol but i believe graffati and hip hop does go hand to hand just like those movies they all have graffiti in them most writers became d jays most bboys were writers and also rappers . so i think it does its the first element of hip hop

    • @DaveNiceNYC
      @DaveNiceNYC  7 років тому +2

Good points. But, I still have to disagree with you. I started as an observer in 69' and started bombing in the 70's. Upon growing up, I noticed and met more white writers than non white writers within the 5 boroughs. I can assure you hip hop and graffiti do not go hand in hand. At old timers day those very same writers were still listening to the same type of Rock music as we were listening to 40 years ago...they didn't become B.Boys, Break Dancers and DJ's.
Sure, some might have become all that. But, not the majority. Do you think Zephyr, Revolt, Rasta BilRock, Shock T-Kid, Kit, Mark 198, Seen, Boots 119, Haze, Sie, Hyper, Sach, Sash, RD, Lace, Klass, Kel, Mare, Chris 217, Comet, Blade, Dean, PJ, Oui, IZ, Mico, Cheat, Haste, Malta, Crunch, Taki, Min1, etc, etc etc (there's just too many to list) became B.Boys? No. Yes, a lot of writers were already into hip hop because they started writing when Hip Hop came out.
The Vietnam war was still going on when the trains were completely bombed. There was no hip hop, as the term wasn't even coined yet. All there was was Rock and a little Funk. The only radio station was WABC 77 on your A.M dial. We were all stoners. The first hits on the Subways stemmed from a psychedelic prospective.
I have a feeling I'm about twice your age. Otherwise, you'd know what I'm talking about. I was on deck since the beginning and I wouldn't lie about the facts.
It's these movies that confused people. When Henry put style wars together, he lumped Hip Hop in the movie. If he filmed it just 4 years prior, there'd be no hip hop, as there was no hip hop. Just Rock and long hair. Yes, perhaps there was hip hop around in the 70's...it just didn't have a large enough audience to be noticed.
The main reason I brought up the Warriors was not to talk about Coney Island...it was to point out the era. The trains were completely Bombed by Rockers not B.Boys. It was filmed in 79', yet the entire soundtrack was rock. Saturday Night Fever was only to point out the era, the trains were bombed by Rockers.
Anyway, this is all textbook. Take it to the bank.
      Peace & Love!

    • @DaveNiceNYC

Hey John, they were Central Park nobodies (perhaps east side...the bandshell kind of united East and West side kids due to it's center location in the park). Toys? Not true writers? Just 1 hit wonders? However, I might be wrong, they had graffiti cliques all throughout Manhattan. I just really never heard of them...locals perhaps? Someone else should know though. :)

Bottom line, there would be NO real urban graffiti if it wasn't for NYC. Later on, it appeared on the west coast and around the world. But, the entire idea of the way graffiti has become, comes from NYC. Common sense alone dictates it. Take it to the bank. Peace!
