  • Outbuildings are an obvious asset to any small farm or homestead. They provide shelter and space for livestock, feeds, tools, and equipment-and farm or homestead growth is usually accompanied by the need for more space. But rather than construct whole new buildings to meet the need, it can be much more economical to “add on” to an existing outbuilding, in the “pole barn” construction style. In this Farm Hand's Companion Farm Bulletin #17 you'll see the various ways a side shed can be attached to an existing farm outbuilding.

Good morning Pa Mac. After watching this videos on some of the designs of past, I now see where some of my ideas evolved from. My mid-western heritage. That isn't a bad thing because it has worked for these past 78 years for me and July 4th will be the first day of my 79th year. I have seen a lot of these designs through the years and how they have held up and some are still being used by the real farmers that are still handing them down to those who still want to take care of their families. Sadly we see those buildings being turned into housing developments by those who would rather have a bankroll and fun than actually have a family and share their time with them and continue a happy and growing life.
Thanks for keeping this way of growing and nurturing a family like the ones who built this fine country. Stay safe and keep up the great work around there. Fred.

Great video Pa. My experience is that you can't have too many shelters.

Sad you had to put a warning up front. There are too many lawyers, not enough doers.

I love some of the older farmhouses where they take you in and show you the original house inside only to find great great grandpa had a family of 8 in what we would consider a garden shed these days. Add on here, a room for grandma there and you got a big house suddenly.

I built two atriums for My golden Phoenix bantam using this method. I actually got the idea from you a few years back when I saw you doing an add-on to your barn.

Might want to check with your insurance company before adding one. Farm Bureau rejected insuring my barn for adding one for my 3 tractors. They said if I would have left a 12” gap between them that they could have included my barn with my farm owners insurance. This was probably around 20 years ago. They may of changed their policy since then.

When building a shed, always make it 2-3 times bigger, or more than you think you need. No one in the history of mankind has ever complained their shed is too big. In the north, where there is significant snow, a steeped pitch roof is best, with long overhangs to keep water and snow away from the building. A gable-pitched roof is best. A lean-to always looks cheap and added on to. If you have many broken-down cars on your property the lean-to roof is probably what you are after.
