It's so they can get more authentic emotion in recording. Especially for a voiceover, where you're not seeing the actor, it's important to get as authentic a reaction as possible by getting the actor's first impressions. Not to say you can't get a great reading if you already know the plot, but it is always good to get the actor's first impressions of how a character may react as well. Even if you know the ending, it's always beneficial to try and do a fresh reading to discover your own version.

My sister keeps telling me that I should get this kind of job but I only do voice over stuff and I think you'd have to major in regular acting (which I can't do). Wow that was still her doing the little Rue voice. That is amazing.
