I feel like it's very telling that before the "Venezuelan blast" (8:09) North and South America had a lot of green... afterward (8:18) they were *all brown.* So, I'm pretty sure that did a LOT more damage than it appears. Especially considering the first shot pretty much vaporized Africa.
I like how quickly it went from the focal point causing mild temperature shifts, to feeling like your skin is on fire, to energy exceeding that of Stars very quickly, to more energy than the universe actually has in all its stars.
Universe sandbox is one of my favorite games to watch Gray wreck havoc with

I love how the first time Gray makes a laser that does damage on a global scale, it's aimed at Africa and disintegrates a good portion of it. Poor continent can't catch a break from Gray's rampage

That number after the E is how many times you multiply the previous number by 10
12e5 is basically 12x10^5 or 12x100000. And reads 12 times ten to the power of 5. If the number is nwgative it coes on the oposite way. 12e5 would be 12x0.00001
It's just a way to write hube numbers. The same way you could write a googol, (a one followed by a hundred ceros) like 1e100

Perfect example is the sun. Not a laser but still works. The light isnt enough to directly cause something to burn, but if you take 1m² of sunlight and focus that down to 1cm² , suddenly you have a light drill capable of straight up evaporating rock
