What really breaks me about the last scene is how the music sounds like from a broken record and only when bojack drinks the alcohol, it turns into a beautiful memory, implying that bojack already used the alcohol at that age to fix his family problems and feel safe.

I love the fact that for the rehab, everything is therapy is a dig at the Malibu resort rehabs which are over priced and sometimes call everything therapy. Also the gag with the horse therapist. As in "horse therapy"

As someone who has been to rehab 3 times. Bojack is in the best position he can pay for personalised but expensive treatment. Where I am it's all run by "charities" that value quantity over quality as the government pays them per patient.
Edit: the biggest thing most addicts need is routine and stability. Housing, food, social and hopefully stable employment. Addiction is sometimes giving up. So giving people security and reasons to live plus plenty of psychiatric/psychological care. Addiction is often a response to other issues and trying to avoid them

I actually don't know any examplws for addiction not being the symptom of another problem.
I am not an addict, but from observation, I think people would really be doing something by starting to treat addiction like the illness it is, the symptom of an undetected mental illness, or a real life problem that has been ignored and now manifested in that way.
Even if I'm wrong with this assumption, it can't be wrong to react with compassion, when someone opens up, and support them to get the help they need...

7:10 Finding a non-church/spiritual affiliated program was key for me when dealing with sex addiction. I did not feel comfortable at all with the sort of implicit judgement that a lot of those programs seemed to have baked in and going to them delayed my seeking of help by at least a year due to how put off I was.

Yup, doesn’t help that a lot of community programs for addicts and homeless people are often directed by church groups, so it gives people very little choice. It’s either subject yourself to a religious environment that more often than not is going to impose judgment upon you, or just wing it on your own because the better alternatives are too expensive for you. It’s a horrible cycle.

I like your point about six weeks not being enough treatment, and to add to it, we find out in I believe the very next episode that the doctor on premises isn't a licensed therapist. He very clearly tells us that he's more akin to a real-world therapy animal. Bojack isn't getting the proper help for everything he's been through and the base issues behind his addictions, which leads him to spending months at rehab because he's in that stage where he's desperately trying to get real help from the best source he knows of.

Really love your Bojack videos. One thing to note, when the bottle turns into the stars spinning just before Bojack runs into the bathroom, I think that was a visual cue to show that thinking of drinking again was reminding him of the planetarium and Sarah Lynn. He has that negative association now really prominent in his mind now that he's been sober for some time.

My dad's alcoholism relapsed after about 25 years of sobriety. It started when he and my mom decided they could handle a glass or two of wine a day. My mom has never had a drinking problem, but for my dad, he gradually fell back into it over the span of a decade. Thankfully he's gotten help (surprisingly AA works for him) and has been sober for 2 years.

For my abusive ex. His substance use always seemed like a way to self-medicate his increasingly severe mental health issues. Alcohol and weed gave him a sort of calming effect. Problem was, he needed more and more to get the same effect and the withdrawals increased his instability. For the genetic component, his dad was a drug addict who died from and overdose.

Dealing with addictions, particularly opioids, is one of society's and healthcare's greatest failures in my opinion. It's gotten so bad that some of the doctors I have been to shut down the second pain is mentioned. They don't run any tests, ask anymore questions or even look at the area that's hurting. Meanwhile whatever is wrong continues deteriorating, so it's no wonder people turn to self medicating. That's just the tip of the iceberg too.

  • @dustycoal183

This episode was my first time truly understanding that substance addiction can just be a small part of someone's list of problems. In anti-drinking campaigns for kids they are often blamed as the sole source of all problems. It as a coping mechanism was only mentioned in passing.

I don't have an alcohol addiction, but my therapist speculates that I used my addiction the same way as Bojack did (escapism) and I lot of stuff resonated with me before i even learned I had an addiction (and thus it hit me harder upon rewatches).
I often say therapy is hard. I feel like the statement by itself doesn't carry the weight of the actual difficulty but.
The relapses, even knowing it's NORMAL and expected, there's still a sense of shame I felt every time it happened cuz it's like 'failed.' I think the hardest part was getting myself to try again and not just quit right there after 'failing' again.
By the end of the day, I had to keep reminding myself "If change was easy then everybody would do it" and if I quit it was my choice and my choice alone. I knew by that point that...while I was afraid of the changes and what those changes bring, I think I was afraid of who I was/where I was in my head before, and I didn't want to go back to that.

Wow, the world is crazy. Tonight, after a few months of working hard and fairly successfully to cut down my covid-worsened drinking problem to only drinking one bottle of wine per week and only on weekends, and/or having a couple drinks while with friends (paying per drink or just talking to people slows me down), I bought a bottle on a Monday and ended up drinking the whole thing without thinking about it, and I feel pretty shitty and guilty about it. At some point I ended up clicking on Bojack (which I’ve watched many times) on my “keep watching” on Netflix. Then, at some point while watching, I was trying to think of that wonderful line you’ve said, “insight does not equal change,” and popped over to UA-cam to try to find that video, but instead I found this, posted yesterday. Getting to that Action stage took me two years despite the nagging feeling that things weren’t right and I needed to make a change. The Maintenance stage has been so much harder than I expected. You think once you’ve “solved” a problem it will be over, but no. Right now I’m not really in a place where I can go to therapy and I’m not comfortable talking about it in depth with my friends. But this video really helps me feel seen, and reminds me I’m not alone and not the first person to struggle with this. It reassures me that my problems are not permanent, helpless flaws, and that I can make progress, even if it’s not as fast as I want. You have a very kind, non-judgemental vibe, and it makes me feel supported. So thank you, for doing what you do, and for being clever enough to do it through a show many of us already turn to in our darker moments.

It’s the same problem as the “secret cure for cancer” conspiracy theories. Aside from the fact that you need to keep a very large group of lab personnel silent, you also have to ask why very rich and powerful people die of cancer and struggle with addiction. Also I don’t know where you get that all religions are majorly traumatizing. That’s pure nonsense.

Amazing video as always and as addiction psychology is my academic and professional specialty you covered it incredibly well!
You’re exactly right, six weeks simply isn’t enough treatment. It could be argued that the real work (dismantling maladaptive coping strategies and building up new, healthy ones) takes months if not years, depending on the history. And I would go so far to say substance misuse disorder is a ramification of mood disorders or other types of mental illnesses.
I’m very lucky, my father was what is commonly known as a “high functioning” alcoholic, and I’ve never been drunk in my life! I’ll have a maximum of two drinks if I’m out and then I kinda fell like that’s enough? But it’s something to always be vigilant because the risk factors are there, as you say.
In good news though, St Thomas’ in London has opened up a new substance dependency ward for those who need supervised tapering or withdrawal management! It’s a drop in the ocean, but it’s a start.
Looking forward to the next video!

This was great, I’m glad you’ve started skipping forward in the series. Thanks for another great video!
I feel like all of those models can be correct depending on the person’s circumstances. They’re all potentially useful for analysing any particular person’s situation.
I’d say models one and two feel the most relevant to me, and it can be especially “exciting” to remain self-aware of those aspects, since I also have a genetic chronic pain disorder and rely on some pretty heavy painkillers to even be functional.
I’ve got to tread a fine line between not having enough and my body pain being totally debilitating, but also avoid chasing 100% complete pain relief. Keeping the middle ground of enough to be functional without building tolerance or chasing something unsustainable is a lot of work - especially since I know I could theoretically take a bigger dose of some of these painkillers for “recreational” experiences instead.
Though perhaps model three is as well since I have no point of reference for how anyone else experiences these substances. Though I have my doubts, since I socially smoked as a teen but never developed a habit, cravings, or dependence on nicotine.
I correctly guessed the relapse rate of opioids before you said it - those withdrawal symptoms are enough to get most people to give-up.
I have complicated feelings about that matter in particular when it comes to myself, since I’ll probably need to take them forever for my joint pain, and I definitely have a chemical dependency after a decade. But the dose isn’t high enough to feel anything cognitively, just physically; and it’s definitely not an emotional coping mechanism or anything for me. So, being able to relate to the chemical neurological side, but not to the social emotional side when people talk about it can feel… quite strange sometimes. Especially since some of my pain doctors prefer to say “chemical addiction”, while my generalist doctors specifically dislike that term and choose to instead say “chemical/neurological dependence” since it’s not harming my ability to function but enhancing it.
Something else I found interesting is how your graph of addiction recovery can also absolutely apply to my chronic fatigue management. Whether it’s about household chores, hobby activities, or being consistently social with friends and loved ones. In a fatigue flare-up I’m usually anxiously trapped in that “planning” stage while I can’t do much of anything but sleep. When my fatigue is lessened I always go into the “doing” stage - but my fatigue never stays low enough for that fifth “maintenance” stage!
Heh, that all ended up a bit longer than I’d intended! But hey, it’s all important to me, and all relevant to what you’ve said, so I’ll keep it all in. Thanks again for the video!

"I don't have a problem with alcohol. I can drink a fifth every night and still speak, function and drive as though I am sober. I can handle it better than anyone I know. I don't act the fool when I get drunk. I just drink because I like the way it tastes. I don't have a problem because I'm smart about how I drink and I don't get myself into trouble."
Now, with 341 days of sobriety under my belt, I realize just how deep my denial, and just how dangerous my habit had become.

I love watching you, so thank you for making videos. I would love to watch you react to some medical dramas where psychiatrists are used in emergencies. One I can think of is "Iggy" he is a main character in New Amsterdam, it is an American medical drama television series, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheime. However, personally, I find it better down than most medical dramas. Iggy is the Head of Psychiatry at New Amsterdam Medical Center and a respected psychiatrist. I would love to see you react to some of his focus episodes like, ua-cam.com/video/wX6TbOIS0ZM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MDTV or ua-cam.com/video/XSYCrtY0Z3M/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MDTV. Either way thank you for making videos. ❤

Can't believe you cut away from one of the most powerful and heartbreaking moments in the show to rapidly blather on about psychological theories of addiction. Let the moment breath.

You should definitly react to the episode “Good Damage”. Diane’s story here is arguably more relatable than Bojack’s.

Never develop Parasocial relationships or longings!! Fell in love with some videos, one was with PhilosophyTube's "Men. Trauma & Shrek" ....watched it 18 times!! For good reasons. Apart from it's brilliance.

I was kinda hoping he would touch on the fact that Jamison was a compulsive liar and possible narcissist.
She told everyone her addiction was bc her parents ignored her for her little sister - turned out the kid was hers and her parents spoiled her rotten. When confronted by BoJack she showed no remorse whatsoever. In fact she lied about everything that night, and her ex-friends, while not great people themselves, pointed out that she was a toxic asshole so they cut her out and moved on.

You ramble sometimes. All I heard rich person speech and I can feel eyes glaze over and my brain turning to ocean noise mode. Then you get back to the good stuff and I switch back on.
