Can I Fix This Broken Tascam 246 That Was Sold To Me As FULLY Serviced?

- I bought a "fully serviced" Tascam 246 off of Ebay. I thought I got a pretty good deal but when I received it, the unit didn't work. Several months later I worked out a parts/repair price with the seller, hoping the unit could be repaired. Watch as I go to work trying to fix this beautiful, vintage multi-track tape recorder.

Thanks for watching. See you in the next one! 😊
Love the 246. Such a great sounding deck!
I’ve really enjoyed recording on it. It’s amazing how hard you can push tape and it sounds great.
I also own both 246 and the 388. Agree with you; just love those VU meters!
I wish you good luck with both of them!
Thank you! Only problem I have now is finding time to use them.
@@Retrothusiast A common problem 😉
I bought one off ebay with minor issues. One big thing that wasn't disclosed was that it plays 10% too fast. It's 2nd VU meter flickers and needed new light. The headphone outs were both buzzy and nasty sounding on my unit. I am in the process of repairing now. Thanks for the video
Good luck with the repair.

Wow that's crazy I'm thinking about getting one but a little discouraged because of this same reason
There are sellers on eBay that charge a little more but appear to have a good reputation of selling restored units, but they do cost a bit more than others. May be worth it to you, though.
@@Retrothusiast yeah that's what I was thinking too that why I have to wait until it won't hurt as much lol
Yeah there are some Sorry Pieces of shit out there.
Awesome!
Great video
Thanks!
There is nothing the retrothusist can't fix
as soon as you open a box and see a "fully serviced" unit with dust in literally every crevasse you know you're in trouble.
Kinda feel bad for the seller who probably lost out on a great sale due to minor oversight in fixing it. But should have tested it first I guess
Yeh, the whole transaction was a mess.
How about a video on how to use it? 😊
Yes! I am planning one of these.
You picked it up pretty cheap? Or you paid quite a bit for it?
LOL, you caught that, huh? Both. At first I paid full price for it, but ultimately got it real cheap since it needed repair and the seller refunded me… the risks of not having a script! :)
hi! thanks for your channel! i just replace new belts, new pinch and new idler tires. now i put play and it stops in 5 seconds... on fast forwr and rew the same only 5 seconds. BUT if i keep pushing the play button keep playing but you still hearing the 5 seconds intention to stop.. and the same with rew and fast forw. the counter works on play mode but in rew and fast forw dont show any movement on the counter... can you help me please... sounds goor and very powerfull rewind and fast forrward. it is only that 5 seconds issue. please help thanks for everything!
Hi there. I'm certainly no export, but you might verify that the pinch roller motor is powerful enough to keep things moving. If I'm not mistaken, the FF and RW motor is different. Either way, good luck and I hope you figure it out. There are very few shops left that repair these.
