- Twenty plus years ago, Cuba was a steam heaven for those of us who were allowed to visit. The island was full of vintage steam locomotives dating mostly from around the 1910's & 1920's and almost all built in the USA. In this episode of my review, we see two mills which offered the sight of steam working hard and, in one case, at some speed. We start on the system serving the sugar mill of Marcelo Salado. This offered a great stretch which ran alongside a straight road and allowed the locomotive drivers to get their trains up towards 50mph on a good day. This system also offered the rare treat of seeing a Porter 2-6-2 saddle tank working for its living.
From Marcelo Salado, we move on to the sugar mill of Ecuador where some particularly heavy loads give us the great sounds of hard working steam. In one sequence the 1910 built Baldwin 2-8-0 number 1904 struggles for some time on greasy rails while shunting an odd wagon or two.
Recorded by me in June 1998.
