Joining Angle Iron at 90 Degrees using an easy Cope Joint. Preparation for Welding.

- I was welding up an industrial-style cupboard I am making which is made mainly from Angle Iron and thought I would do a quick video on how I cut some of the 90-degree joints for welding in this project.
I have been using this joint or doing the 45-degree cut for many years, BUT, I did not invent this joint, people have been using this joint for many years before we started using it.

@Hello Gavin Clark, How are you doing?
You've just solved two problems for me - interdependent problems with the 45 degree mitre. Getting both square and dimensions right can be tricky. I sometimes gain and lose 1mm or 2mm in dimensions, by ensuring that the item is square. If I gain on the length, I lose on the width, and vice versa. This method guarantees dimensions and makes keeping square much easier! I can't wait to try it. Thanks so much mate!!
Thank you I am glad it was of some help. thank you for your comment
Thank! I'm a beginner who really needed a straightforward method to cut and weld good, clean, 90-degree corners. Awesome!
Been doing it that way for years!!
Makes for a good fit every time, it's faster, easier to weld and much easier to clean up!!!! Any grinding is out in the open more!!
Hay mate iam 20 year welder boilermaker thank you so much for sharing this this will be my preferred method from now on.
Thank you I am glad it was of some help.
Struth mate. 20 years a boily and this is new to you? You didn't learn much in early days. This is kindergarten stuff.
I learned this method when I first learned to weld! Were you asleep in welding class?
Thanks, always done 45 degree but from now, I'll be doing it this way. Thanks from UK.
Thank you
Wow! What a coincidence? I have also independently conceived this idea sometime early this year, while contemplating on how to fabricate iron doors and windows using mostly angle iron bars and glass plus pieces of flat bar strips,it then turned out that this was an irreplaceable and most reliable option for certain areas of the design, so I say well done to you and for any one who is interested in my own design idea ,you can do so by directly responding to my comment for me to provide more details
Instead of having to miter (2) separate 45 degree angles to match perfectly on four different sides, I’d much rather cut (1) 90 degree angle and slap it into a factory edge. Well done brotha! 🍻 I’ll have to forever use this lol so many times when I was starting out in fabrication, I struggled to get a true 45 degree miter every time. This technique is so simple yet, it’s clearly a thought out engineered design, meant for structural integrity as well as aesthetically pleasing weld joints.
👏 👨🏭 🍺 🍺
I use this technique for making equipment stands for A/C units. This makes a stronger stand than a 45˚ miter and it is easier to keep the stand square. Keep all the welds on the bottom for a smooth top surface
I'm from the Philippines, thanks for the new technic, I'm a newbie in welding and I love making thing, your video will help me a lot.
Thank you I am glad it was of some help.
Thanks mate. I struggled cutting 45° before, your way looks easier and heaps neater. I'll give it a crack. Cheers.
No problem 👍 Glad it gave you some ideas, hope all goes well. Thank you for your comment.
I'm building a welder cart and I tried cutting your way. Easier, cleaner and finish is better.
I agree that each person should choose whichever method works best for them. With that said I suspect a lot of people who have trouble ending up with 90-degree corners, cutting half as many times with one quick slice on the 45 may have a heat distortion issue. Once you figure out where to tack first, which beads to run first and in what direction 90's are quick and easy.
I agree with you, but as some people only ever make one or two welding projects in their whole life, it's nice for them to have another way that may be easier for them to make the cuts. Thank you for your comment.
Yes this has been my preferred method for a while now. Makes it simpler and don have struggle with getting the angle dead on.
Yes I agree nice and simple.
@@GavinClarkdiy Also I have been using a lot of old bed frame angle and that shit is hard a awedding prick and makes the friction saw blade want to squirm and wander especially on a 45! So that's when I started doing them like this! Also just found your channel and love your other videos! Watching them is like a vacation for my brain! Lol, keep up the good work Sir!
@@tomwyrick2824 Thank you very much Tom, I appreciate your comment.
Going to make a plate to block my mower discharge. This will work great for me. Thanks!
Awesome, I am glad it helped, thank you for your comment.
I have been welding for some time and honestly I never thought abought that. This is simpler and think much better..
Excellent technique...I grind a chamfer on the outside edges as well for better penetration of thicker material. Weld on!
Very good advice Mondo, I agree with you. Thank you for your comment
@Hello RideEm, How are you doing?
I used this technique to make a cooler holder for my tractor. 1 1/2” angle iron. Got it perfectly square. Lots of welding surface. Will be my method of choice from now on !
I've Always had problems cutting angles, as they say there's more then one way to skin a cat, you just made my life that much easier, thank you for this video.
Glad I could help, thank you for your comment.
Good deal! I use that method of joining angle iron more than several times in the past.
Yes it is not a new idea, many people use it, thank you for your comment.
I'm a maintenance tech and fulltime welder in the oil and gas industry. 45s are used in all heavy duty builds.
@Hello Daniel Aguado, How are you doing?
Hey Gavin - thanks for this really useful tutorial. Your method for joining angle iron is very clever. I think it helps keep warp under control, is easy to clean up and easy to make joins discrete. Cheers!
Awesome, thank you, I am glad you liked it. Just for the record I did not invent this method it is one that we have used at different times over many years. Thank you for your comment.
glad I've been doing this all the time (I used to weld 45s back then)
Thats a very strong joints and most of all it was clean a perfect 90degree
Thank you.
wow, even your tack welds are a thing of art, bravo!
Thank you very much!
Just what I needed to know thanks mate
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it.
Thanks Gavin, I'd always done 45 degree cuts and they needed more care and time than this. Thanks again.
Thank you very much, I am glad you found something useful in my video, thank you for your comment.
Gavin Clark Great tip! I am going to give this a try next time I weld up angle iron.
Thanks for demonstrating the cope joint. I'll try this next time I need to weld 90 degree angle with my everlast welder.
I am glad it was of some help. Thank you for your comment.
Very good technique, simple, easy and strong bonding.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it.
I came for the knowledge. I stayed for the accent. Great video my friend.
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
This is great! I had no idea this less complicated version of a cope existed. 45 is a slow pain if only one chop saw is available. Have to keep changing between 45 and 90.
I've been welding the 45 cuts for years. ..for me it's quicker and neat
I agree with you but some people struggle to cut a 45, thank you for your comment
tutorial video please
Nice. I will try this method on my next project. I have had the legth issue with the miter before .
I believe this is a stronger joint vs. 45° .
Great, no need for a 45 and less material to cut, thanks Gavin.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it.
Very cool 👍👍
Gives you one more weld line than a standard 45
Yes, you are right, but probably a bit simpler joint for some people to get 90 degrees with.
Thanks from Kenya
Thank you very much, Greetings from Australia.
Without cutting any angle by jointing both together is very stronger and better😉😉😉 im a filipino welder
I’ve done them both ways. I also grind chamfers on the edges so I can flush grind the welds.
Same mate, makes for a neater final product.
nice to know this kind of technique. another idea to work on my plant holder ...
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I wish you the best for your project.
Good idea.. cutting at 45 degrees requires accuracy...
Doesn't require it but it makes life easier.
Excellent it looks better more clean
I think so too!
Im low-tech family welder having amateur welding skill. It was so hard making 45 with any angle grinder. Cutting 45 with zip cutting disc is not accurate. Making the bevel edge toke a lot of time. I see that Cope joint method save me because straight cut only is fairly easy.
i was wondering why he didn't like the miter joint as much, makes sense
Simple but very precise way of joints. Nice...
You have good welding skill. Thankyou for imparting welding wisdom. Best wishes from Wangaratta.
Thank you very much Robbie.
@Hello robbiefishing, How are you doing?
Mate you are a genius ...I'll use this technique
A one cut cope and really clean work. I'd like to see the finished work.
I have not edited the finished cupboard as yet, but I wil get it up as soon as I can. Thank you for your comment.
@Hello David, How are you doing?
I do this with all structural metal for strength purposes
God bless you mate. Was just looking for how to repurpose some old book shelf rack frames....and you nailed it for me.
be a lot easier to get a good finished weld if you left gaps , if your sure you can get full pen on the closed joint , then just mitre at 45 degrees .
im not seeing this as an answer to any problem , maybe just me who thinks that , but id not want to be paying you by the hour.
SO much easier than trying to get a perfect 45 degree angle...!
Hi! I'm from Philippines. Great video I'm your fan now
G'day from Australia, welcome to the channel, thank you for your comment.
That's a great way, looks really nice. I'll do this technique from now on. Thanks for sharing. 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻 cheers.
Thank you, I am glad you liked it. Thank you for your comment.
Great picture frame joint.
That’s a cool joint method! Thanks
Glad you like it! Thank you for your comment
At 2:47 if you make an additional cut to the coved piece you can fit it inside (on top of) the straight piece for a let more structural strength.
Thank you very much, I agree with you, and appreciate your comment.
That’s nice I will give this a try .
Thank you.
so good
Very good job see you from FRANCE !
Thank you.

Thanks for the great video! I was going to do a 45 degree cut for my frame but your method is so much better! Thanks again!
Glad it helped!
Very nice work well done
Thank you very much
Makes sense! Thanks.

Easy way brother. New friend 👋
Thank you very much, I am happy that you liked it.
Good idea,thank's🙋🏾♂️😃
I’ve done them both ways. The 45 is faster and easier-if your saw is at a vertical 90 degrees. Otherwise when you cut a 45 it’s going to be off. I use the bandsaw for the slice in the end for this method. Much easier, and cleaner than a grinder. But if that’s all you have...
The only advantage to me with this method is no sharp corner that needs to be welded. It’s better to weld this joint.
Yes I can imagine how good the bandsaw would be, thank you for your comment.
AUSSIE RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank's mate.
Very useful! Thanks very much!

Tôi vui bạn thích nó. Cảm ơn bình luận của bạn
I do prefer a cope vs a 45 miter for keeping the joint squared easier. The best is to notch a 45 and then bend and only have to weld 1 half of the 45 instead of 2 if you had just cut both pieces at a 45 and but welded them together
Yes, a very good comment. Thank you
Thankyou!
Thanks very much about idea welding work make some more video about welding work 👌
