Okay... I know Michigan is much more talented and with better coaches and Rutgers was working in a first year coach and what not... but there is no excuse to ever lose 78-0 at home vs a divisional foe. I have no idea why Rutgers would decide to do that. And furthermore, this year (2018) year 3 of Chris ash and they're just as bad or worse. 40 point loss to Kansas !? Blown out at home by Buffalo ? Why do they even bother fielding a team and that's an honest question. Pathetic
Schiano has them competitive-ish again. Not good yet, but the recruiting is up and the teams culture is finally there. We will have to see in a few years but they’ve only been solid one year since joining the big ten.
Just rewatching for the memories. It wasn’t too long ago but I still miss it. This was Michigan’s year. I know we lost to Iowa but with a win against Ohio State we would have gone to the CFB playoff. Of course there’s the whole overtime controversy with the bad call and all that, and I think we should have won that game. We were a better team that year. Since then I’ve wondered what would have happened if we won that Ohio Sate game. I think we would have won the B1G Championship and I think we could have gone to the National Championship. We may have lost but the recruiting would have been better and Ohio State’s would get worse. Ohio State’s streak would end there. We would have lost to them in 2017 (but by less) and then we would’ve won the next year. Lots to think about.
This was a home game for Michigan. There are so many Michigan alumni (and Big Ten alumni) in the NY/NJ area, I'm not surprised they fill up Rutgers stadium. Easy tickets, probably cheap compared to other Big Ten schools. People don't realize the Big Ten didn't get the Rutgers and the NY market because they thought Rutgers had a big fan base; they did it because of the huge population of alumni and their families in the area. It'll be the same when UCLA and USC join, except those teams are actually good and have fans.
I think in 2016 we saw two of the most impressive wins I've ever seen, and both came against Rutgers. This one obviously, the 78-0 win by Michigan, but also Penn State's 39-0 win. On paper, that might not sound all that impressive but it was played in an ice storm and the field was basically a skating rink. It was a game that usually would have been 3-0 or 6-0.
Jim Harbaugh's teams play it physically and violent and that's what I think allows them to break the will of their opponent more often than not. Even when they're outmatched and outmanned, they're able to go out there and play so physical and beat them down with plays like power, pulling the guard, down, down and here comes a big downhill running back. "I don't care how many stars you have attached to your name, as a linebacker, you get annoyed having to deal with that, and that's ultimately what returned them to power at Stanford, what made them so good in the NFL and ultimately what he's going to do at Michigan. He's going to return them to a physical powerhouse that every team is going to have to deal with when they play them.
2-4 and ducked three straight opponents to end the year. Now no one even knows if he will be back next year, and the fans of every one of his rivals openly roots for Haurbaugh to stay.
