I think Riptor's theme in this game feels kinda generic to me personally. Not as "out there and in your face" as all the other character themes. Probably should have been a remix of her KI1 theme like what was done with Cinder.
So for those who don't know, a Yokai, a Japanese spirit or mythological creature in some capacity is often able to imitate the human form or our mannerisms, but they tend to have problems repeating themselves, like saying the same word twice in a row. Ever made a phone call over there and notice how they always say 'Moshi moshi'? It's to confirm if the person on the other end is a human and not someone possessed by an evil spirit or replaced by a shapeshifter. Apply this to Hisako's theme. She's an Onryo, a vengeful spirit and clearly not human anymore, but the vocals/lyrics repeat words. Despite her state of being Hisako retains her humanity in death and combines it with her otherwordly powers to chase UltraTech around for pillaging the graves in her village which she died for to defend in the first place. TL:Dr Hisako and her theme are top-tier in multiple ways.
That's not the actual reason why people started using moshi moshi, is just a cool urban legend. And not every yōkai has that ability, some of them are even playful, like the kappa. But foxes are tricky and some vengeful ghosts, like an onryō or an yūrei, can mimic human traits as well.
Listening to this, I just thought of something my Japanese teacher taught me: We were practicing greeting phrases, such as "moshi moshi", when it was my turn, I just said "moshi" and my Japanese teacher gave me a joking reprimand and some backstory on the phrase: Japanese people greet each other with the phrase "moshi moshi", especially when speaking on the phone, to identify each other as human. Youkai (japanese monsters) cannot speak proper human language, beast youkai because they do not have the right mouths and tongues to properly imitate our sounds, and youkai who were formerly humans have abandoned their humanity and so devolve and begin to lose the ability to speak like humans. Especially repeating words is impossible for youkai to do, so "moshi moshi" became a kind of trust phrase with the implication "I can repeat this word, so now you know that I am human" and if someone only says "moshi" it becomes a dead giveaway that they're not human. What about it? Well, during Hisako's theme, phrases are often repeated. ("Fukushu, fukushu", "kemuri, kemuri", "gyakusatsu, gyakusatsu", "ryuuketsu, ryuuketsu", "sakebu, sakebu".) Whether Mick did it intentionally or not, I think it would be quite significant to a Japanese person: Hisako is an onryou, but she's a rather unusual one. Instead of being an indiscriminating killer who curses everyone who gets in her way with her grudge, like a typical onryou would, she's out on a rather noble mission and only has one specific target for her grudge: Ultratech and the individuals associated with them. In other words, though she's an onryou, she hasn't abandoned her humanity and so she would probably still be able to pronounce repeating words. (And as for me, well, I still say just "moshi" when answering the phone and my argumentative nature eventually made my Japanese teacher decide that I'm actually an Amanojaku, a youkai of contradiction who goes against the norm, takes the opposite position and argues against people for the sheer hell of it... Well, that described me perfectly, so naturally I _had_ to deny being one.)
Garrett Boomgaard Depends on what you mean with "revenant"... I mean, it's not like there's only one definition of what a revenant is. The cadence of the lyrics reminds me of a folk song. The lyrics themselves remind me of a summoning prayer. This is a neat theme. I also like the idea of an onryou who's actually well liked/worshipped by the people she haunts.
Brilliant theme. Got to aplaud the ki team for character naming though. Just looked up what hisako means in japanese and it mean "long lived child". Fits suprisingly well despite the irony thay she is dead.
My favourite character. I've always had a strange fascination with ghosts and the undead, and I'm a big fan of horror movies like The Ring, so I decided I was going to main Hisako the instant I saw her. Really cool that she's a good guy as well. She's an unstoppable spirit of death that will follow you to the ends of the earth to cut your head off and eat your soul, but only if you're evil or you piss her off. Otherwise she's chill. Her theme is great too, really captures the J-horror vibe with the harsh strings, spooky chanting, discordant melody and the faint gurgle at the end, but also gets you ready for a fight. Really makes you feel like you're going to fuck someone up with your super ghost powers and then drag their spirit to hell.
Mick I gotta say your soundtrack is awesome beyond words. Even my 2-year-old has been going around the house humming Spinal's theme for the past year. I can't hardly even get on youtube with him in the room without him begging "Aganos, Daddy, play Aganos!! Play Omen song Daddy, Omen song!!"
Yeah sure, just make sure you don't get too button happy or she'll wakeup counter you to death, and then command grab you because you're not pressing buttons anymore
I swear, everytime there's an Onryo in any game they always have a kickass theme, awesome to play as AND against and their creepiness is fucking brilliant; being a literal walking consequence of other people's shitty actions. J-Horror is just the best Horror.
@@Daniel_Lancelin For example, Zappa in Guilty Gear. He's not technically an onryou, but pretty much almost all of his moveset is based around summoning them. Also, I can think of Noroko, from the MUGEN game The Black Heart, and Ella from another MUGEN one, or, if you want playable cases aside of fighting games, Yamaoka Rin AKA The Spirit in Dead By Daylight, Oichi in Sengoku Basara 3 (though she's not an onryou, she's designed to exactly function like one)... Most other cases include them as enemies.
They're scary as hell. Western equivalent would be a poltergeist, I suppose. A former human that should be as dead as his/her body, but is so full of hate and anger it refuses to go. Imagine living on so much rage that you didn't need food, water, or oxygen to keep going, forever. That's her.
from the description mick left this is what google translator says Revenge, prayer of revenge Indelible Hisako, indelible grudge Slaughter, massacre of tragedy Indelible Hisako, guardian Bloody, bloody rage Cry, cry, guardian Indelible Hisako, tomb of flame Smoke, the smoke of memory
Her idle theme is one of the best. You perfectly captured this character's former innocence which got twisted by tragedy and hatred while also incorporating KI's atmosphere. I can't wait until you put up Sadira, Maya and TJ's themes hopefully in that order.
Hisako is the greatest vengeful spirit as she has honor and only desired to kill and torment those who killer her and her family and burned her village to the ground. She does not involve innocents and instead only attacks the strong and powerful and guilty. With insane levels of spiritual power I might add. She'd destroy nasty evil Kayako and Sadako for sure.
Because she was a true samurai daughter, even after death. Kayako and Sadako (And Samara etc.) were created from the petty evil of modern day (Not that petty evil did not exist back then as well but you get my point)
One of my favorite songs by Mick, I love his Doom work, but I love hearing a rock horror theme, it is such a unique mix that you don't get often. And when it is done it normally isn't this well balanced, normally it is either more horror or more rock but Mick struck the nail perfectly on this one. Hope to play this game one day so I can main her lol.
I love this song! So somber, creepy and terrifying. Great job, Mick, Erika, Casey and Ali. Also the picture of Hisako keeps getting closer, anyone else noticed that?
His work for Doom is freaking amazing but Killer Instinct captures what the characters like in a way. Killer Instinct is definitely his best work with Doom coming in very closely after.
Nuclear-Skull87 Considering the time-period and the fact that anime didn't come around until at least the 1960s, Hisako is more than likely from Feudal Japan.
@@DetectiveNyx. Anime actually came around decades earlier than the 60's, more specifically around the early years of World War I. Back then, though, it was mainly used for propaganda purposes for the Japanese military. Your point remains, though.
I just realised that this version and the album version (I assume) are different, not only the vocals are more clear and loud in the album version, also in the "la la la la" part in the album you can hear Hisako crying
Some of the dislikes are from her competitors: Sadako (Ringu) Samara Morgan (Ring) Kayako Saeki (Ju-on/Grudge) Toshio Saeki (Ju-on/Grudge) Mar (Ju-on/Grudge) Alma Wade (F.E.A.R) S-Ko (Guilty Gear)
"Hello, my name is Fred. The words you hear, are in my head, and I noticed this little girl with a spear, only to see her stabbing me in the rear... And I found it, Naughhhtyy....."
+Hector Al As far as i know he's not making covers, at least on this cannel, plus i doubt that he knows this song, and, imho, the song you requested isn't as good as Mick Gordon's music, didn't mean to be rude.
Too bad that you were replaced by Atlas and Celldweller, these... "guys"... not even close to your mastery, who are too lazy to make some real effort in making real, memorable and majestic music like you, our lord, and just put their disgusting dubstep everywhere. Thank you so much for all the great music, Mick. This one's my favorite. The most bad ass fighting game track I've ever heard. Props forever and ever. Amen. I mean, EXTREEEEEEME VICTORY!
+Grubbo If awesome soundtracks are your thing, I would recommend taking a listen to the OSTs of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Both are done by the same guy (Daisuke Ishiwatari), and are some of the best there is. But from this side of the globe, Mick's work is pretty much as good as it gets.

Mick, I can't afford an Xbox One, and it kills me since I played the original games to death, but I made sure I bought the first season's soundtrack on iTunes. Like the original games, the soundtrack is awesome, and wanted to let you know I think you rock. Keep it up man. Kudos to Robin Beanland too.

The cadence of the lyrics reminds me of a folk song. The lyrics themselves remind me of a summoning prayer. This is a neat theme. I also like the idea of an onryou who's actually well liked/worshipped by the people she haunts.
Lore wise, six years late I know. She protects the village.
What is a onryou?
@@heitormedina7098 scary ghosty! big vengeance
Brilliant theme. Got to aplaud the ki team for character naming though. Just looked up what hisako means in japanese and it mean "long lived child". Fits suprisingly well despite the irony thay she is dead.
necroshadow (tech magos primaris) awesome find, thanks
Mick Gordon is a musical genius
I've been waiting for this. This is so freaking good!

Play Omen song Daddy, Omen song!!"
anyone notice Hisako getting closer and closer to the screen? its not just me right? guys? GU....
+Sarutobiization RIP
+Sarutobiization like i wanna kiss her anyways its fine for me :D
Probably just a reflection on her INSANELY, UNBELIEVABLY, INCREDIBLY slow walk speed. I know. I main her.
Kakyoin Noriaki Nah she come can come as close as she wants me and my boy TJ Combo love to get up close and personal.
Yeah sure, just make sure you don't get too button happy or she'll wakeup counter you to death, and then command grab you because you're not pressing buttons anymore
I actually prefer Mick over the new guys over at KI. just my personal preference
You're not alone, though atlas and cell are not bad at all. Their Eyedol theme is fucking amazing.
I just think their songs are very hit or miss. You either really like a theme or dislike it.
BraveHeartedHero1 Absolutely agreed.
I haven't really played since season 3 came out. Didn't realize they replaced Mick. This is very disappointing.
@@taxisalad After seeing what he came up with for DOOM 2016, I say it was well worth it.
I swear, everytime there's an Onryo in any game they always have a kickass theme, awesome to play as AND against and their creepiness is fucking brilliant; being a literal walking consequence of other people's shitty actions.
J-Horror is just the best Horror.
I can't really think of many other examples of video game Onryo. Could you list a few?
@@Daniel_Lancelin
For example, Zappa in Guilty Gear.
That's her.

Sutairu Masuta of course it would be on 4/20 lol we gonna light one up and see a dude ablaze ;)
Omg if they release cinder on 420 I couldn't tell you how happy that would make me
Her idle theme is one of the best.

So freaking addictive! I've been blasting this through my speakers on a daily basis.
I love this song! So somber, creepy and terrifying. Great job, Mick, Erika, Casey and Ali. Also the picture of Hisako keeps getting closer, anyone else noticed that?
Now I do
Meeeeeeeeeeep
People always talk about Doom, but Killer Instinct was some of Mick's best work IMO.
and right now after that bullshit which happened in id software they are flaming him and spamming how bad composer he suddenly is :/
Prey, Wolfenstein, and if I recall Boarderlands are also Mic Gordon.
His work for Doom is freaking amazing but Killer Instinct captures what the characters like in a way. Killer Instinct is definitely his best work with Doom coming in very closely after.
Also, Bring Me the Horizon's "Parasite Eve"
Hisako is surprisingly gothic & colorful for a anime-style Japanese Ghost-girl!
Nuclear-Skull87 Considering the time-period and the fact that anime didn't come around until at least the 1960s, Hisako is more than likely from Feudal Japan.
Oh, absolutely!
@@DetectiveNyx. Anime actually came around decades earlier than the 60's, more specifically around the early years of World War I. Back then, though, it was mainly used for propaganda purposes for the Japanese military. Your point remains, though.
You did it. You turned the killer instinct theme into a Japanese rock ballad-friggin-lullaby.
"Keinai Hisako!"Yet again, Mr. Gordon. My ears are slave to your compositions. Great work. Cant wait to hear what you do for Cinder!
I don't know what is more terrifying about her, her theme, her personality, or her walking speed
I just realised that this version and the album version (I assume) are different, not only the vocals are more clear and loud in the album version, also in the "la la la la" part in the album you can hear Hisako crying
3:32 I thought she was laughing.
You're goddamn right.

Kayako Saeki (Ju-on/Grudge)

Mick brilliant composer. I love the fatness to your sound. I hope we can work together one day. This is one bad ass track
JGS Music Thanks man! Totally!
+Hector Al As far as i know he's not making covers, at least on this cannel, plus i doubt that he knows this song, and, imho, the song you requested isn't as good as Mick Gordon's music, didn't mean to be rude.
+Abc Defg If you didn't know Mick is actually the composer of ALL these new KI themes
What do you mean "fatness"? .-.
Too bad that you were replaced by Atlas and Celldweller, these... "guys"... not even close to your mastery, who are too lazy to make some real effort in making real, memorable and majestic music like you, our lord, and just put their disgusting dubstep everywhere. All new themes were ruined, they are 2, but they are nothing, compared to you!
She lullabies the ki theme. That's very clever, as people used to play soothing music before a battle to calm nerves.
Can’t believe this song is 7 years old. Time flies!
Thanks!
This is my new favorite Birthday Massacre song.
Befitting of Hisako. Creepy and badass.
Hisako just freaks me out, every time I fight her she just turns it to a fighting game to a horror game for me
And this part of the track doesn’t help🤣 3:06

Took me a few months to realize they were singing the theme for Killer Instinct.
I think.
Love how you had to sneak the Grudge sound in there at the end. Great stuff, Mick. You are an absolute legend!
Seriously, save like mad and get an Xbox One! It's worth it for KI alone!
True that the only reason i even have an Xbox One is for killer instinct
Silverism Your picture is hilarious XD
Silverism Ehhh a single game does not make a console worthy IMO. Sunset Overdrive looks fun though.
I share your sentiments bro. One game isn't enough to warrant an entire console purchase for me, but hoo boy am I enjoying appreciating KI from a distance. My only hope is that it may come to PC, and if it doesn't, I'm content watching videos and listening to awesome tracks like this.
By the way, stellar job as usual Mr. Gordon.
HOLY SH!T RINGTONE UPDATED!

Nah, you're the one who's awkward, the song is just sexy.
mick gordan is the only composer whos work I have ever took active notice of, and started following, seeing what games he has composed for.

No, He must remain sober throughout the duration of KI lol.
Maximilian's waifu!

Andrew Blechinger Whats a wakeup?
A wakeup is a move you can do when getting up from prone, such as a Shoryuken. See his SFA3 boss rage where he's getting beaten by Sagat to see the concept in action.
The part when the song amps up at around 4:05 is the most amazing music i've heard in any video game.
