I am still not sure about this. I got fascinated by heavy mulching methods for growing vegetables - Ruth Stout (hay/straw mulch), Back to Eden (wood chips), and Charles Dowding (pure compost as a mulch). And I am now not sure - am I missing something by not growing cover crops around my veggies? By only growing veggies of one kind in a row and having thick mulch around them? Is the soil life still working very well on the mulched ground in comparison to cover cropped ground?

I would plant a wildflower that blooms at a different time than your tree to support your pollinators. They don't use a lot of fertility and they're ornamental. You can thin the seedlings easily if you're seeding in and too many germinate.
Vetch is awful in the SE. I've never planted it, but find clumps of it year after year in my woods. That is the only non-native in my woods. No one near me grows it. Wind, water, or animals likely brought it originally. I remove it every year & thought I'd gotten it all 2 years ago, but I keep find it in mostly new areas. If I don't pull every year, I suspect it could cover most of the ground. 😢
Turkeys are highly vulnerable to something called blackhead disease, it's caused by a protozoa- Histomonas meleagridis. Other poultry can also have the disease too, it's just that turkeys are far more vulnerable than other poultry species.
Actually I completely agree with you! Paving planet is most certainly a major contributor to climate change. That reality however was not the subject of this discussion. If we hope to maintain an environment that nurtures the web of life humans depend on to thrive we need to start finding ways to have plants growing on roofs. We need far fewer parking lots if we are to avoid the worst of catastrophic climate change. Moreover new parking lots ( would that there were not any!) can be made so that up to fifty percent of that pavement is not there and very tiny tough plants can be growing in parking lots with this type of grid "pavement". Thing is that is not my realm I am just repeating ideas of others in this reply. We need everyone's expertise and passion if we are going to turn this around. I happen to know a lot more about plants than concrete and pavement. Hence the subject matter of this video. Meanwhile I promise you I act every way I can to resist more concrete and pavement.

Depends on the cover crop. Many of the “no till mulch system” cover crop cocktails they are using here are planted in the fall, overwintered, grow till the start to produce seed heads, and then killed in the spring right before planting through it as mulch! But basically there is an infinite number of different plants and strategies! Some cover crops are permanent, some are summer cc’s and they are killed in the fall. There are fall cover cropping strategies where you plant things that winter kill. There is the idea of understory cropping, like sweet alyssum under tomatoes, or purslane under the corn, or Fukuokue’s white clover everywhere approach. The entire concept in this talk imho with “dynamic cover cropping strategies” is to get creative! So.. to answer your question: yes!

I kind of want to experiment with native plants as cover, like maybe using a native annual bunchgrass/native annual clover mix, if you could find species that didn't have dormant seed. Then I wouldn't feel bad if my cover crops reseeded and escaped. But also I feel like I would be luring native insects in only to kill them when the crop gets terminated? I dunno! His comment about toads not getting killed by crimping was encouraging.
I'm a native plant enthusiast & grower on a small scale. I'm in zone 7 & would love to find a source of native clover seeds or cuttings. I agree about flora potentially exploding or ending up somewhere else. Wind, water, birds, and animals transport seeds. But I'm pretty sure that among the choices, I can grow non-risky cover crops, which won't include vetch or non-native clovers.

And I've only gotten it to survive with transplants, bc the seedlings get devoured by slugs. Trying a different species this year, hopefully it will be lower maintenance!
How do you start out on a neglected, mostly bare ground in a hot climate with a short, wet winter with low rainfall. Does Sorghum or Millets have the same seedling restrictive capacity as the hybrid sudex.
Wood chips is a good start. But, I’m still trying to decide what I’m going to do in terms of actual cover crops. I’m in Phoenix az. I’ve been using wood chips which must include leaves and they are working well.
@@OfftoShambala Be careful with wood chips for some are indiscriminately made all kinds of recycld wood biomass that are NOT ALLOWED for they are treated with cancer causing chemicals that causes cancers in pets and even in humans but especially in pets for pets wants to roll over wood chips in the same way they want to roll over playfully over grasses. Cover crops are only good if they are a mixture of 50% perennial cover crops and 50% mixture of annuals and biennials that will self-sow and self-bolt by themselves. For the aim is to produce fermenting plant biomass to produce humus after they went through their annual and biennial life cycles.
I’m not an expert but in my experience composted wood chips made during the growing season (ie with lots of leaves mixed in) is good, but for veggies straw is a good bit faster.

Macro evolution is a theory, a theory that top mathematicians tell us is so improbable that it approaches impossibility, having close to one chance in the number of atoms in the universe, a theory that has run its course, that has been shown by more intelligent mathematicians and scientists, including biologists, that it never should have been and should no longer be referred to as fact. These partly educated unwise pompous biologist types with their silly university degrees need to stop insulting our intelligence by referring to macro evolution, an impossible series of random events, as fact when it is so painfully obvious that there is intelligence behind the origin and processes of life.
Using a greenhouse doesn’t seem sustainable or regenerative. First there’s tons of pollution to make the product in China. Then more pollution to ship it. And rare earth processing and other electronic components aren’t eco friendly either. Which is why the EPA shutdown and killed the Us dominating the world in rare earth metal processing. That and greenhouses producing carbon to feed plants I get that, but that doesn’t seem eco friendly since if you cared about earth you’d want the plants to remove carbon that’s already in the air. If left to fester for long enough, they may even find themselves wanting to live a life of complete selfishness. They may decide that they are entitled to the labor of others, that their own children are parasites fit for slaughter, and live a life solely for the purpose of self gratification. Anyone that stands in their way will be subject to extreme violence and eventual annihilation.

There is much more biodiversity, both above and underground , with the cover crops. And at the end of their cicle, you can used them as mulch

@@novak23 some say it's as soon as they go to flower but others say, as soon as the flowers fall. I do it when they fall. Then I have more biomass

Ivy is a cover crop for concrete. (lol) I'm not an agriculturalist, just an observer.
While its true that concrete (and asphalt) are major heat sinks & affect rain patterns, a single object or event is not the cause of climate change.
