Reviving Sri Lanka's Agriculture: FAO's Innovative Seed Project Empowers Smallholder Farmers

Sri Lanka's economic crisis in 2021 led to limited import of fertilizers and other inputs.
As a result smallholder farmers struggled to maintain their cultivations and livelihoods.
In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with funding from the government of Canada, supported 92 farmers in three provinces to produce high-quality seeds for improved onion and chilli production.
Traditional seed production methods were replaced with innovative technologies through modern equipment and extensive training provided to the farmers.
