This song makes me so proud to be a kiwi. As a kiwi living overseas I can tell you all - it is entirely true. Don't whinge; Aotearoa is a fantastic country and until you've seen the state of the rest of the world you don't appreciate just how good we have it back home!!
Totally missed the point, mate. This song is satire. It's taking the piss out of people who look at genuine problems in New Zealand and try to brush them under the rug by saying that we're lucky to be here. Just take a look at the lyrics: There's a guy I know who lives in town I see him about once a year I suppose He's had a coronary since Easter He's got a haemorrhage in his ear He went bankrupt a couple of weeks back And now his wife's left him too I said "You're looking odd mate You're looking queer, what are ya gonna do?" [Chorus] He said "We don't know how lucky we are To live in this joint Fred" So, there's a guy who's experiencing: - serious heart problems, - haemorrhaging in his head - bankruptcy - divorce and the consequent breakdown of relationships All of those things by themselves are enough to seriously diminish a person's quality of life. All of them together? That's a life which is basically in ruins. But the bloke goes on to say that despite all of this, despite destitution, poor health, divorce, and potentially impending death (from the heart problems), he's "lucky" because he lives in a certain place. Total bollocks.
Great song from the great John Clarke. Indeed, we don't understand how propitious are our circumstances compared to the rest of the globe, nor the great ruck we possess.
R.I.P to one of the fathers of New Zealand comedy you did a hell of a job and you deserve all the glories of heaven mate have a good one your one mighty bloke can't get as kiwi as this
Why the hell are you still here in the nuthouse?! Get back to where it's sane while you still can, NOW! Also, when you get back there, don't breathe another word about this fictitious island nation called New Zealand, because the fewer people know about it, the safer it will remain, not that it exists anyway. (A concerned UK citizen recently returned from a fictitious place.)
What utter BS..Its thé Godzone mentality of sleeping sheep NZ'ers that has put thé place under tyrannical gouvernance. Helen Clark....was thé start of thé décline.
Absolutely bang on, Fred ! I'm a Pome who loves his own country, but loves the bloody Hell out of NZ, too... spent several years there and absolutely love the place, and the Kiwis aren't a bad a mob of fellas, either (just don't anybody tell em, don't let em know... It'll be bad... just like when they've downed half a stubby of Tui... it'll go to their heads :)
Collectively we are not cognisant of how how propitious are the circumstances we find ourselves in New Zealand. What I love about this from John Clark in the 70s is that there are 2 levels. It is a great song to lift your sprits on face value. It also has a satirical meaning from when it was written. Back then we used to go on about how lucky we were and all the social, health and financial problems people had at a personal level were usually swept under the carpet. Not talked about and not addressed. Making them worse. Probably the 2nd meaning is lost now, but any fan of John Clarke will be well aware of his brilliance at satire. Thus not surprised to learn the second darker meaning of this song. RIP John Clarke. We are poorer without you. On both sides of the Tasman.
Two kiwi icons gone in as many months! RIP John Clarke! We truly "Don't know how lucky (blessed) we are to live in Godzone! Thanks for the laughs mate!
Great song. Hit number 1 after being re-vamped from an earlier, rather insipid (to be honest) version. And the beauty is it remains a legend because it never gets played on mainstream radio. I always preferred his other hit, "Gumboots", until this fantastic re-vamp came out.
I still hold this sentiment; we dont know how lucky we are. No matter how hard it looks for us, we dont have it anywhere near as bad as some othet countries; we have rights, social justice and help, no wars, and probably most importabtly - most people dont know where we even are on a map so were relatively safe 😂
Sean Fitzpatrick is in this video ^^ A fine engine-room All Black and captain, who didn't score many tries like tight forwards do these days, but I do remember one where he got up from a ruck and ran like over 10 meters and dived straight under the post like a GOOOOAAAAAL ^^ That was when I was a kid. Earliest childhood memories and I can never forget that face.
You'd miss it if you're a bit younger or from overseas but most of the people in this video were pretty big NZ celebrities at the time. Helen Clark, ex Prime Minister of New Zealand, is there at 1:26
@spots2012 I hardly think that's fair. The point is that we live in this wonderful country with so many good things and we don't even know it! Most of us are whinging on about how amazing other places are and what a 'hole' NZ is, without realising what a great place it is to live in! The point is that we DON'T know how lucky we are...
@Amberol I agree. And his too littlest kids got eaten by a whale, are you going down there this year, he said "Fred, right on the nail!" I loved that line most of all:)
@spots2012 I am English- live in Australia and have visited NZ six times over the years- mostly to see my shithouse rugby team get the arse from yours. New Zealand is full of culture- Maoris alone have fascinating legends and beliefs- also there's Scots, Danish, Polynesian cultures too. You live there and obviously know better then me but to an occasinal visitor- NZ seems chock full of culture- is a great place and has good people- not as obnoxious as Aussies or pessimistic as us Poms
This feels like something you'd see in V for Vendetta. It's not "New Zealand is great" it's "Everywhere outside of New Zealand is so horrible, that if you complain about New Zealand then you don't know how lucky you are to have been born here."
@Suparnovah What I meant was, planet earth is a fairly good thing (and unique) in this universe, and most humans don't appreciate it, or even notice. We don't know how lucky we are. When u grow up with the legends of Maui, hearing Fred Dagg's superb colloquial re-working of it, made me...emotional. Maybe english is ur 2nd language and 'selfish' wasn't quite the word u wanted, thats ok mr suparnovah from russia :)
Still as relevant as ever…a positive attitude seems harder to find today…but it’s there if you uncover gems like this. RIP John Clarke
"We don't know how propitious are the circumstances, Frederick".
Incredibly relevant now, Love you NZ
This song makes me so proud to be a kiwi. As a kiwi living overseas I can tell you all - it is entirely true. Don't whinge; Aotearoa is a fantastic country and until you've seen the state of the rest of the world you don't appreciate just how good we have it back home!!
Yep, that's why John Clarke left to live and die in Australia.
It's true it's strange that lol
Taking it for granted
15 years later I’m in the same boat feeling the same way!
@@MsMesem who is 'David'?? This was John Clarke.
Totally missed the point, mate. This song is satire. It's taking the piss out of people who look at genuine problems in New Zealand and try to brush them under the rug by saying that we're lucky to be here.

So, there's a guy who's experiencing:
- serious heart problems,
- haemorrhaging in his head

- divorce and the consequent breakdown of relationships

The greatest New Zealand comedian / satirist. He will be greatly missed.
Another absolute kiwiana classic. God I love NZ.
We don't realize how propitious are the circumstances. Damn I love this song.
Great song from the great John Clarke. Indeed, we don't understand how propitious are our circumstances compared to the rest of the globe, nor the great ruck we possess.
Fred Dagg is often right when he says we don't know how lucky we are.
Brilliant R.I.P. John Clarke aka Fred Dagg
Thiis is the New Zealand i remember 😔
R.I.P to one of the fathers of New Zealand comedy you did a hell of a job and you deserve all the glories of heaven mate have a good one your one mighty bloke can't get as kiwi as this
Such a great song. I quote it often to people when they are moaning.
John Clarke is a national treasure.
"He said we don't know how lucky we are to live in this joint Fred, we don't know how lucky we aaaare he repeated" gets me every time 🤣
R.I.P John Clarke - yep we don't know how lucky we are! Thank you for helping us laugh at ourselves and especially politicians!
I'm a kiwi currently in the UK and watching what's happening here vs in NZ with Covid 19 this song is 100% accurate
Why the hell are you still here in the nuthouse?! Get back to where it's sane while you still can, NOW! Despite the Earthquakes, we don't realise how proficious are the circumstances, Frederick!
RIP Mr Dagg...you were one of NZ's best !
John Clarke is very funny & a lot of fun! He will always live on through his comedy!
R.I.P Fred gone to the great gumboot store up yonder, your comedy is never far from home

Brilliant song so true at the moment
Rest In Peace, John. We knew we were lucky to have you!
We need to make another one of these. Gosh, 1998, so many years ago and back then, 'We didn't know how lucky we were'.
RIP MATE! You will be sorely missed. Rest easy John Clarke.
RIP John Clarke. Fred Dagg was my mentor growing up on a Farm.

Brilliant-

New Zealand's true nation anthem.
RIP John Clarke, huge loss for NZ and Australia. But right now I'd say God is asking: "is this new bloke for real?"
We are very lucky indeed!
ye after a while here, the awesomeness plays with your head, and you need to take a break :P
@Amberol I agree. And his too littlest kids got eaten by a whale, are you going down there this year, he said "Fred, right on the nail!" I loved that line most of all:)

I'm here till tuesday. 2019
Yes New Zealand is Gods own..
Hey the act is really coming along. You ought to be on the stage, the next one out of town
This feels like something you'd see in V for Vendetta. It's not "New Zealand is great" it's "Everywhere outside of New Zealand is so horrible, that if you complain about New Zealand then you don't know how lucky you are to have been born here."
So many famous Kiwis. Baha! Love it!
Of course we do, who else would come up with l&p?

Aaah Fred Dagg...They just don't make em like this anymore 😀.
@elliott6178 Could only agree with you as far as John Clarke doing us the honour of coming to our shores, the man is a genius.
Tino Pai Bro, good shit!
