I love that you are not judgemental. You are super adventurous and always wanna try new things. I wish I was as inclusive with my eating habits as you are.
In the Philippines, a lot of old people would put coffee or hot chocolate in their rice and eat it with tuyo (dried fish). It makes it taste like champorado. My grandparents would sometimes eat banana with rice. Or dip banana in patis (fish sauce) to make it taste sweeter. I'm not saying this dish is just eaten by the elderly, but it's mostly eaten by them because most kids nowadays think it's weird.
My friend was married to an Indonesian guy and she always talked about cheese cake being actual cakes with cheese on when she visited the family there. This makes so much more sense now.
yesssss in the Philippines we have cheesecake with literal shredded cheddar cheese (boxed one) sprinkled in chiffon cake, it's so good. I grew up eating that so when I heard of american cheesecake using only cream cheese, it confused me xD
Yeah as an Indonesian guy imagine my disappointment when I ordered a cheesecake and got a sponge cake with sprinkled cheese on top. It's hard to distinguish what people really mean when they say "cheesecake" and that sponge-cheese-cake abomination has only become more popular. Lord, please save us. Edit: I'm surprised by the replies from fellow Indonesian and Filipino saying that that sponge cake cheesecake is their default one. Growing up I call western cheesecake (cream cheese one) as "cheesecake". Whereas the sponge cake with cheese on top was just called "bolu keju".
As and indonesian i can confirm some bakery shop in here use cheddar cheese as topping and there this one food called martabak that is a pancake with condensed milk and cheese also with sprinkle, it was a sinful food but you can't stop eating it 😂
It’s a very New England thing to eat extra sharp cheddar cheese on apple pie. It just works. You don’t use the processed, bland cheese, you need the really strong, aged cheddar. The combination just works, and I never thought it odd until I went to college and my roommates thought I had lost my mind when I ate it that way.

So I like to watch these videos for a source of comfort. Beryl provides that for me. And I’ve made a couple recipes before such as çilbir. But I was watching this particular video the other day and really paid attention. And I could NOT stop thinking about the peanut butter, mayo and pickle sandwich. So I made it. Before I took a bite, I was scared. But then I thought…what is there to lose? If I don’t like it? That’s okay! I have more of each ingredient to do what I would normally do with them. But at first bite? I had to laugh. “Omg. Why does this work?” I thought to myself. It is crunchy, soft, a little sweet, briny, salty, tangy…all the food adjectives that I LOVE all put into one sandwich. So, Beryl, thank you for your constant comfort for me and I’m sure other people. Thank you for also giving Madeline a platform to share this recipe. And thank you, Madeline, for sharing it. I absolutely love it. ❤️❤️❤️
For the Filipino cheese; when it's mixed with dessert it's usually as tiny cubes not grated. The cubes would add more flavor as it's a more concentrated surface area compared to grated cheese, and the little chew adds a different texture to usually creamy desserts. Fruit salad recipe: •Canned mixed fruit •Cream [Something almost like whipped cream in thickness like Mexican style table cream/crema] •Condensed milk •Filipino brand cheese [my brand to use was Ques-O but Kraft or Eden are more available internationally] Optional: •Nata de Coco [cubes of coconut gelatin] •Kaong [fruit of the sugar plum tree] •Raisins Instructions: •Strain the liquid from the canned mixed fruit [and the optionals if you use them] •Mix all ingredients together
Growing up in the summer months, we didn't always have a ton of groceries for lunches. One of the sandwiches that I had and loved (still love), was mayo and banana. Simple, three ingredients. Cheap white bread, mayonnaise and a ripe banana (cut lengthwise in strips). My kids don't get it. That's okay.
when talking about weird combinations that work, I think Champorado (chocolate porridge) and Tuyo (fried dried fish) will be a top contender in the Philippines
Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches!!!!!! YES YES YES (mayo optional) I've been eating this for 30 years! It's the best thing that no one believes is good. Vindication!
Funny, I don't know why people would assume it's not good. Peanut butter can be sweet or savory so it doesn't surprise me to see it with pickles. I'm sure it's delicious
When she said cheese and dessert, i immediately thought about martabak keju (thick Indonesian pancake with shredded cheese and condensed milk as a topping)

The weird combo that my husband, Handsome, came up with early in our marriage is one that is one of our favorites to share with others--oatmeal and ice cream (especially cookies and cream, strawberry, or one of the more classic ice cream flavors). For this dish to really work, you have to make the oatmeal as you normally would with all the sugar and butter mixed in well. Then you place it in the dish while it is still hot and add a giant scoop of the ice cream on top. It can send someone into a diabetic coma, but it is totally worth it!
My lil' heart gets excited when Beryl'a knee pops out from the right side of the screen. What is it gonna do today? Introduce the most interesting and delicious food? Or maybe just make fried noodles? Who knows?
That phillipines combination is the same as in indonesia. In here, we use those grated cheddar cheese like maybe in almost everything too 😂😂😂 because it is good. I recommend you to try pisang keju (basically it is a banana (fried/grilled) and top it with condensed milk and grated cheddar cheese or even sprinkles. It is very sweet and good.
From the Philippines as well: crushed pineapple, Eden cheese, condensed milk spread on a sandwich. :) not too many Filipinos are familiar with this and some swap the condensed milk with mayo but I prefer condensed milk.
The ube halaya and cheese on toast, reminds me of cheesy ube pandesal tht have been gaining popularity in the Philippines in recent years. Also, the crunch from toast is quite similar to the crunch you get from freshly baked pandesal~
here in Mexico there’s something called marquesitas that’s basically a crepe you can put Nutella , condensed milk , cajeta and what makes them special is that they have this specific cheese called “queso the bola and once the ingredients are on the crepe they just roll the crepe and there’s a marquesita so the sandwich with sweet and cheese reminded me of it lmao
OMG, I do also combine sweets and cheese. My personal favorite, whenever I crave something sweet and there's not an actual dessert nearby, is a toast with Nutella and shredded cheese. Best combo ever!

I actually love that you love everything lol I always look forward to your huge smile and surprise after you try something new, I think it's what really makes your videos so much fun to watch 😁 your channel is the biggest reason that I've started trying new dishes, so thank you, I can't wait for your next video, great work hun! ❤😊❤
I'm gonna try that peanut butter/pickle thing RIGHT NOW! I'm gonna use naan bread and put sweet pickle relish on one half and a hot dill slice on the other.
*5-minutes later*
O! M! G!
That's the BEST COMBO! The hot pickle and mayo...mmm mmm! The sweet pickle relish was like a salty sweet jam. Everything just enhanced the peanut butter. This is now my go-to snack of choice.
I was eating Doritos while cooking with sweetened condensed milk the other day. Yes, they do go together. Better than my caramel turned out.
I've met the dude in your PFP. When I was in the hospital as a kid, he was coming around to visit. Very sweet.
Ooo have you tried Doritos and cottage cheese together?! 💣 🤯
@@rebekahanderson5020 no but that sounds great
@@bodyofhope Thats a nice story, thanks for sharing. Um this is a little racy but I think we're friends now lol. I started sending this picture to guys who would ask for naughty pics. It's my Dick Clark pic. I liked the energy of the picture and made it my profile pic
Here in the Philippines, some Moms and Grandmas even put cheese in their Fruit Salads.
Fruit and cheese trays are pretty common here in the U.S......mostly some type of cheddar with apples and grapes. And Baked Brie with fruit preserves isn't too unusual either. It's a good combo
@@stigmatamartyr4223 did your mom or Gran used to make cocktail sticks with fruit and cheese cubes on them for parties and stick them in a halved melon to try be fancy?
I think they learned it in the 70's and did this till like the 90's. So funny, tacky and retro. I kinda love it!
@@gstar81 I’ve seen ppl use toothpicks to put grapes and cheese together. It’s good.
@@stigmatamartyr4223 fruit salad is different from just fruits+cheese, in the Philippines, our fruit salad has chopped pineapples, raisins, nata de coco, papaya, grapes, apples, cheese (usually cubed), cream, condensed milk, then refrigerated overnight.
@@underseven9016 that sounds so good. There's a sweet dip here that mixes cream cheese, crushed pineapples and pecans and it's so good on crackers.
Yes, Beryl! Way to go with the ube and keso (cheese) pairing. That is a real combo we have here in PH. We actually have a bread that is entirely flavored ube and cheese. You may want to search the brand Gardenia and its flavored bread-- ube and cheese. :)
emmymade is incredible love that u mentioned her !
I love how you organically made Ube Keso without knowing it's a staple flavor in the Philippines
To everyone reading this, stay safe and take care of yourself! And if you can, take care of each other too:))
This is so sweet of you 😊
For the Filipino cheese; when it's mixed with dessert it's usually as tiny cubes not grated. The cubes would add more flavor as it's a more concentrated surface area compared to grated cheese, and the little chew adds a different texture to usually creamy desserts.
Fruit salad recipe:
•Canned mixed fruit
•Cream [Something almost like whipped cream in thickness like Mexican style table cream/crema]
•Condensed milk
•Filipino brand cheese [my brand to use was Ques-O but Kraft or Eden are more available internationally]
Optional:
•Nata de Coco [cubes of coconut gelatin]
•Kaong [fruit of the sugar plum tree]
•Raisins
Instructions:
•Strain the liquid from the canned mixed fruit [and the optionals if you use them]
•Mix all ingredients together
Growing up in the summer months, we didn't always have a ton of groceries for lunches. One of the sandwiches that I had and loved (still love), was mayo and banana. Simple, three ingredients. Cheap white bread, mayonnaise and a ripe banana (cut lengthwise in strips). My kids don't get it. That's okay.
Loved banana sandwiches growing up, we used butter instead of mayo but I think I might try mayo, sounds really good :)
We used miracle whip. Lol- all my friends think I'm nuts but I guess it's a family thing. my mom and my great grandma and I all love it.
These videos are amazing. Thank you for being you! So happy I came across your channel. 💕💕💕 The pickles, Mayo and peanut butter....OMG! Love!
I have a similar snack when there's nothing in the kitchen. Toast two breads, add a layer of butter, add pickles and spread some herbs! It's so good!
when talking about weird combinations that work, I think Champorado (chocolate porridge) and Tuyo (fried dried fish) will be a top contender in the Philippines
Do you add mayo?
I literally heard Captain Holt's VINDDDDICCCCATIONNNN
I must try this,.
It's also good with a slice of cheese 😁 instead of mayo... or with it, bring everyone to the party lol
It’s so good that she’s actually finishing her food
When she said cheese and dessert, i immediately thought about martabak keju (thick Indonesian pancake with shredded cheese and condensed milk as a topping)
Im Haitian but I prefer the traditional way of eating the polenta with smoked herring without the banana.
You should get a merch saying " this is so good"!
that smoked herring polenta dish looks soooo good!...and healthy! i'm totally going to try it....with the avocado and with the banana.
That glimmer of sadness when he takes the rest of the sandwich ❤️ aw
Yes, you tell the haters! I don't get why people are complaining that you like everything. Who wants to watch someone complain about what they are eating all the time? Ew.
Personally, I LOVE that you enjoy the food. That's why I started to watch your channel. I'm slowly making my way through all your videos and I'm having a great time. I love food and seeing how other cultures eat different ingredients. When you get excited, I get excited. I think your channel is so wholesome and finding it has given me something positive to look forward to when I come home from a long day of work.
Cheese is a pretty common flavor of ice cream here in the Philippines.
That sounds good
@@phoeberaymond8781 one of my fave ice cream is cheese.
My girlfriend hates cheese and I'm disgusted. Cheese is my favourite flavor. Just kidding, I love cheese, she hates it and that's how we roll.
I think you need to come here to the Philippines and let us blow your mind with our awesome cuisine
Beryl, you should definitely try “terang bulan” or “martabak manis” from Indonesia!!! Try the chocolate + cheese combination lmao. Great video as always btw
You are my absolute favorite. I'm sick right now and I've been binging all of your videos in bed. You are so good for the soul, girl. I love you and everything you put into the world. 🙏🏼 Please never stop making videos.
UBE HALAYA AND CHEESE IS ONE MY FAVORITE!!! FOR THE WIN!! OHH I SUDDENLY MISS HOME!!
Ube and keso is a real Filipino flavor combination ❤❤❤❤
The first recipe reminds me of something similar we do in Brasil, we eat feijouada (kind of a black bean stew) with orange and banana as well :)
Fun fact! In Argentina we have sweet empanadas, made of cheese and sugar, some people call them pastelitos, it's an either love it or hate it dish!
I live in Minnesota and can confirm that peanut butter and pickle sandwiches are a thing here!
I'm in NC, and can confirm. It's a thing here too
The weird combo that my husband, Handsome, came up with early in our marriage is one that is one of our favorites to share with others--oatmeal and ice cream (especially cookies and cream, strawberry, or one of the more classic ice cream flavors).
Who knows?
tf are fried noodles why did i type that-
i just meant noodles lol
@@shalmali-379 fried noodles are a thing lol
Fried noodles? Maybe your brain was trying to put you onto a new delight? Noodles can be fried and are delish.
@@trixiemontejo7172 ooh lol I've never heard of them
Try peanut butter and pickles with sriracha!! I make it open face style, sooooo gooooood!!!
Thank you for including The Philippines often XOXO
PB, yellow mustard and onion sandwich. Delicious! Your dog wanted to eat your Haitian dish; she was licking her chops 🤗.
One time some Filipino friends gave us some cupcakes that had sticks of cheese down the middle and y'know what? It worked. They were pretty good.
Puto with cheese is absolutely amazing!!!
@@pusheen9444 Yeah! And thanks for the name, now I know what it's called!
Me la antojaste, voy a ir por una derrato
I love Madeleine's passion about the pickle crunch :D
it is of the utmost importance.
OMG, I do also combine sweets and cheese. My personal favorite, whenever I crave something sweet and there's not an actual dessert nearby, is a toast with Nutella and shredded cheese. Best combo ever!
Just think: peanutbutter, egg and pickle sandwich..😯🥰
Can I toast bread with butter instead of mayo 🧐
Another great combo I recently discovered is Philadelphia Caramilk spread (this might just be an Aussie product) with raspberry jam. Great on bread or even cruskits
Oooh I am going to try the peanut butter pickle. It's not too far from the peanut butter-avocado-soy sauce-garlic sandwich I make
My grandma used to eat peanut butter and pickles too, and I remember being shocked by how good it was the first time she convinced me to try it. She passed away several years ago, and whenever I'm especially missing her I eat it to feel close to her. She didn't make it with mayo, but I'm definitely gonna try it that way now!
Are there any foods or dishes you've made that you now eat more regularly because you loved them so much?
Exactly my question!
I am so stoked about how much you love the PB, pickle & mayo sandwich. It's something that my friend's mother made us for lunch as a child & (despite my own family thinking it was completely bizarre), I have been eating it ever since. SO good! My favorite is crunchy PB, dill pickle slices & Sir Kensington's mayo on rye or Pumpernickel toast. AMAZING.
BERYL! YOU"RE MY GIRL! There's an ube and cheese ice cream flavor very popular in the Philippines. Craving it soo bad now!!!
We can get these flavours at grocers here in Vancouver, Canada, too. So fun!!
I used to eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches with my grandma too!! I miss her. Thanks for the nostalgia. 💗
My inlaws always want us to pack Eden Cheese whenever we visit them from the Philippines.
Peanut butter and pickles....dad used to love that. He also loved tuna fish and jam (either sandwich OR fried in won-ton wrappers!)

Same. Her grandma is going to love this video. So cute.
I love how the title says Philippines and then it becomes a gathering place for Filipinos
