    As a Heavy Metal guy, this is my choice;
    1. Deep Purple - In Rock alone shows the ground work of what would become Speed and Thrash Metal.
    2. Black Sabbath - The beginning of Doom and Stoner Metal.
    3. Led Zeppelin - Their influence on Progressive Metal cannot be denied.

Hi again Phil, your Sabbath / Ritchie friend here, Pat. Being 15 years old in 1970, I was given In Rock, Sabbath's first album and Uriah Heep's first album to listen to all at once. Whole Lotta Love was out but I had not heard Zep's whole album yet. But my early take away was the overall sound of Sabbath was so unique, but the musicianship of Ritchie Blackmore, especially the Child in Time solo was astonishing at that time. What never left me, though, was the impact of Gypsy and Bird of Prey. So to sum up: All four were very close, each had their own signature. Led Zeppelin had an edge on pure song writing ability, Sabbath had the sound, Purple the virtuosity and Uriah Heep was stunning on recordings but harder to get that impact Live.
Your analysis is spot on also. I love hearing how you break down feeling from then to now. I agree that over time, Black Sabbath may have made a bigger mark. Have you heard the bootleg Live recording of Megalomania Asbury Park 1975? That was Ozzy's vocal peak. Plant had already lost some of his voice by then, and Ritchie still had the killer instinct into the 90s.
We were all so lucky to have all of them when we did. thanks Phil

Asbury Park is fantastic, it was included in the Sabotage deluxe set, sadly sourced from an mp3 source so your boot probably sounds as good as the official release.

Onya Phil. Another thought provoking presentation. Always going to be subjective. As someone of your ilk (a bit older) and growing through my teens with these bands, I can only support Zeppelin above all the others. Of course they finished when Bonham died as there was a major “component” of their sound- gone. Musically and creatively, they were leaps ahead of the others, dare I say it to new listeners who watch too much UA-cam.(!)…Zeppelin ruled our high school years and later, proudly as a father, I was even then told to turn the music down by my children…maybe that is the fascination as they are “no more” and have become even more mystical. Love your work, Dude. Cheers from Oz

Enjoyed your analysis of the big 3. I just turned 70 and was there at the start of this movement. When I was young CCR were my favourite probably due to being radio friendly.
WhenI first heard WLL it was a total spinout and shortly after Paranoid and black night all onthe radio. Wow.
I started listening to and eventually buying albums and love all 3 bands ahead of other bands from that time.
These days I listen to zep more than the others and as it is more diverse and overall the songs are stronger.
I still listen to a fair bit of Sabbath and understand why they are more relevant to the young today. Purple are next for me and still play them often.

fortunately got to see Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin 19 70, and 1971 I saw Deep Purple in 1972 i’m gonna rate these bands on their live performance. Deep Purple is absolutely spectacular. Live mind blowing pretty much Made in Japan was the type of show I saw. Saw Led Zeppelin they were great live really really long sets they played probably the best Zeppelin I saw was in 1975 Physical Graffiti tour. saw Sabbath first West Coast show, and then the Master of Reality tour. Sabbath sounded really good, but we’re kind of statue performers. Deep Purpel number one,
    Led Zeppelin number two,
    Black Sabbath number three.

I would have to say that Zep come out on top, with 2nd and 3rd alternating between Sabbath and Purple, where Purple have the edge. It comes down to what I was exposed to in the mid 70s when I began listening to rock in all its splendid manifestations. Remember buying a dodgy Italian cassette, probably pirated of the Zep V album. Not knowing what to expect and not having heard that much from any rock bands so my reference points weren't that many at the time. The first three tracks blew me away, so to speak, and they still affect and haunt me to this day. If only No Quarter had followed Song Remains the Same, Rain Song, Over the Hills and Far Away it would have been the most perfect first side ever. The riffs, hooks, lyricisms, ambience and the sheer distant thunder of light and shade in the production values. My first Purple was Burn (a mate lent me his prized copy and took him forever to get it back) and likewise was bowled over by it and the sheer force from Ritchie's guitar. He was at his best here with riffs that make it one of rock's greatest achievements. Mistreated is so varied, finger top sensitive and crushes everything else, as if Thor's hammer crashed down. With Sabbath it was Vol 4 (yet another wonky cassette) and what a wonderful yet weird experience this was. Read somewhere that it was considered proto-sludge, sludge being the operative word here. Snowblind being a favorite but there isn't a bad track here. All three albums set the template for me to which all else thereafter was measured. In fourth place (if anyone was to ask) I would have Budgie despite the Sabbath (and Zep) influences. But that's for another discussion.

    Hi Phil,

"The majesty of rock, the pageantry of roll" -(Spinal Tap). I would include Jethro Tull in this "era". I would choose Black Sabbath as my fave. A good point(observation) about how they started off as blues based rock, and then went on to be great innovators. the same can be said about the Beatles....

  • @AlbertEinsteinSpock

As you say, it's so subjective to pick favorites. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA). This is my recollection: the song "Hush" would still come up on the radio play list once in a while in the early 1970s. But Led Zeppelin was getting most of the post-Beatles buzz/spin. Deep Purple's "In Rock," for whatever reason, was largely unknown in America. As you know, there was so much great music back then that it simply didn't catch the attention of the radio station disc jockeys. Look at any Billboard music chart from the late '60s/early '70s and your jaw will drop at the big-name acts throughout the Top 40. Keep in mind, also, that many stations were playing both pop and rock. So, you could hear Neil Diamond or Elton John one moment and Led Zep the next. But when 'Smoke on the Water' made it onto the dial, it was monumental. The song was an instant classic, and for those who bought 'Machine Head,' the rest of the album was even better. It would be impossible today for someone young to wrap their head around hearing a band known for a mellow pop song like 'Hush" cranking out 'Space Truckin' ' a half-hour later on the same radio station. But back then, the radio dial was not as fragmented as it is now. Many people were on the same page, listening to both pop and rock at the same time. Nowadays, there are 500 TV stations and a zillion types of music and one generation can't relate to the other because they don't watch the same TV stations or listen to the same music. I don't know how big "The Who" were in England in 1972, but they would have been on the Mount Rushmore with Sabbath/Purple/Zep back then in the USA.

What a question! So in my adolescent Purple were my gateway into rock music and my no 1. I’m not really sure I got Led Zep fully and I didn’t really get into Sabbath until later through Heaven & Hell, and thereafter the early albums. Roll on 45 years…., and now without doubt I listen more to Zeppelin than any other band. The breadth, quality and mystique of those albums never wavers for me. I have spells of listening to Purple especially Mk 3 and 4 incarnations. I never got into all the reforms, the band ended with CTTB for me. I also now love the early Sabbath albums, the run from Paranoid to Vol4 was brilliant and original.

My order would be - Sabbath, Zeppelin then Purple a distant third. All of them were pioneers but Sabbath resonate with me the most, being lucky enough to see them live in 1976 whilst still at school. I had to see Zeppelin on film first! (The Song Remains The Same in the cinema), then at Knebworth. I never saw Purple live unfortunately but Made in Japan was a real favourite at that time.

Hi Phil. Love your channel : ). My ranking for the Unholy Trinity is:
    1. Black Sabbath - the band with the most heart. I love their raw, primal energy, especially the original line-up. They also have an underdog quality that I find endearing.
2 + 3 is too close to call. Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have a more polished sound. Led Zeppelin received the most airplay where I'm from so their songs are more familiar than Deep Purple's or Sabbath's. All have a place in my collection.

LED ZEPPELIN, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath. Hi Phil - it will always be Led Zep for me, I like Deep Purple, Sabbath less but still all great bands. Led Zep were from that blues rock era, out of all the guitarists in these three bands it was Jimmy Page who could play the blues and they never ventured to far from that. Led Zep1 was released on 3/69, Black Sabbath 2/70 and Deep Purple in Rock 6/70. Those were the three defining albums for those bands - all great albums. As you mentioned - and I agree, at that time the world view was Led Zeppelin 1. I've seen Zeppelin and Deep Purple in 1970/71 - both great concerts, but I loved Led Zeppelins versatility. The acoustic Zeppelin - the song writing was great, and Jimmy's playing was just magnificent. Dont get me wrong - the other guys were great to, but Jimmy IMHO at that time was the best. Great topic Phil. Cheers Doug

    Hi Phil,
For me is still Black Sabbath no 1
    Led Zeppelin 2
    Deep Purple on 3
But still these bands made it all
For me it stardet with the Beatles then Hendrix and in 1970 the albums black sabbath -- Paranoid-- led zeppelin 2 and Purle in Rock!
    What a year!!
Then in 1971 Iommi and Butler had have an different sound and that made me feel great. I love it.
That change the musicsounds with Purple and Zeppelin.
My friend Ron Dont like the sound and was in the Purple thing not Zeppelin.
    NOW 2024,
Look ad the box with Toni Martin and the new album from Deep Purple.
    What a selling!!
If the moment was 1976 i think it was Zeppelin --Sabbath-- and Purple at last.
But still for me it is and wil be BLACK SABBATH.
Specialy Master of Reality It change my live .... How i am today.
    That record blow me away.
Second Volume 4 and saw Sabbath in Amsterdam for the first time.
    Greatings from the Netherlands..
    Dick.

Purple all the way. Black night started it all for me. Made in Japan is still the yardstick that no one can equal. As for guitar players, it's Tony Iommi. What a gifted man he is, also just take a moment to think what he had to overcome with his hand injury. If that horrible accident didn't happen, imagine what his guitar skills could have been? Still a fantastic player. Cheers

Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin. Never changed for me ever since discovering rock music in the early 1990s. Totally agree with your views Phil! What Purple and Sabbath had that Zeppelin didn’t was the top side projects (Rainbow and Dio) . This added to their importance among fans I guess. As for Zeppelin, for me, end up third for two reasons - I am not a fan of the blues and acoustic stuff. notwithstanding this, the film Song remains the same’ is perhaps the best live footage any band has ever released (together with Floyd’s Live in Pompeii)

Never been a big fan of either of those bands. I first came in contact with rock music in 1983. By that time neither band was particularly on a roll. They were regarded by us very young rock fans as "the old guys" and we wanted the "new" hot stuff. And so i never really cared for them at the time. And i also never felt the need to go back and discover them later on, because there was so many new music coming out in the mid 80s that i had a hard time keeping up with all the albums i actually did like. I've heard every album they've released ofc at some point in my life, but i couldn't say that i was hooked to any of them. But i can acknowledge what these bands have done for the evolution of rock and metal music and for that alone i will always be grateful to them.

Once again Phil a great review. For me as an American with an older sister I first got into Led Zeppelin, than Deep Purple & than Sabbath.
While I listen to all three very often my favorite has always been Black Sabbath.
My very first concert was Rainbow with Dio, and a little bit after I saw Sabbath in 76 and than saw Zeppelin in 77. All 3 shows were great but at that time I had not seen Deep Purple until 1985, and they were incredible as well. All of my favorite bands are British, not many American bands ever came close.

I will say that Deep Purple for sure has climbed the ladder for me over the last 10/12 years, after releasing some amazing albums like Infinite. I saw them live a few nights ago and they rocked. But sometimes when i listen to Zeppelin, in that moment they are the greatest band that ever existed. And there could not be heavy metal without Black Sabbath, Vol 4, Master of Reality, Paranoid, i'll never forget hearing those and other albums for the first time. So i guess i'm saying they're tied. 😂

Led Zeppelin albums were rather samey and Black Sabbath a bit too doom and gloom for my liking, whereas Deep Purple's music 1968 to 1976 was so varied, and they were all such great musicians.

Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple in that order. I was 16 in 1969 and Led Zep, The Stones and The Who have always been my top 3 bands. Closely followed by The Beatles and dozens of others, all British.

Impossible to pick an all time favourite of those 3 bands as i loved them back then and love them now . I find myself going through phrases where i may play more of a band for a few month, then do the same with another band . ATM it is Deep Purple , but I have no doubt that it will be Led Zeppelins or Black Sabbaths turn again

I knew exactly how it would turn out so I was curious about why you did it? But then I looked at the result! What do I know? I thought Zep were a shoe-in for no 1. I love Purple and Sabbath even more but I suppose I’m far more likely to join Zep groups and therefore assume everyone has them at no 1. So a good lesson learned for me and a fascinating reason from you as to why rocks most popular band back in the day came third. You’re dead right Phil, Zeppelin died with the 70’s but the others carried on. Not only that for me Jones (the quiet one) is the only one to impress me with a (typically) understated career in production, composition and musicianship. From working with contemporary pop artists to composing classical music in the “early” style. While the bands poster boy, Plant, has had a more consistently successful career commercially he’s never progressed in any significant way and nothing like the heights to which Zeppelin soared. And the real shocker Mr Page; the architect and visionary of Led Zeppelin has never created anything more than average short lived projects and a handful of unimaginative one offs. All this punctuated by his frequent returns to the “mothership” whether remastering the albums twice, a fairly random offering of live material, Unledded with Plant and his Black Crows Zep pseudo cover band outing. And the closest he got to those dizzying heights of the 70’s was of course the huge 2007 “didn’t you used to be Led Zeppelin” gig at the O2. This doesn’t disappoint me, it surprises me, this doesn’t anger me it makes me very very sad. Of the three of them I never thought that Jimmy would be the one living in the past, his “Las Vegas years” came early. For decades I knew he would rise again but I was wrong. If Page wants to enhance his legacy beyond 1980 then the best he could would be to start a long overdue live series from the many multitracks he has. He’s done the studio thing to death so come on Jimmy let’s have a celebration of the live stuff delivered with an equally forensic approach as that afforded to the studio stuff. But we have to be realistic here; is there time for this?
Great video Phil, thought provoking and personally educational. Only Now Spinning has that perfect non-partisan membership to answer such a difficult question with a result most likely to rise to the challenge of answering such a subjective question. 1,400 Now Spinners can’t be wrong!
Quick footnote: I don’t quite know whom would comprise a US holy trinity but there’s no doubt that Zeppelin are one of them, they were afterall an American band in all but birth and residency in the same way that Hendrix was (originally) a UK act.
PS: for me 1) Zeppelin 2) Sabbath 3) Purple

Hey Phil ... Well, we are pretty much the same age, and very similar in musical tastes. Let me make myself perfectly clear, it has been, and will always be, Purple for me. And when I say Purple, I mean, Deep Purple 1968-1976. I was against the 84 reunion, but I do like The House of Blue Light & The Battle Rages On, but think Perfect Strangers is trash, apart from the title track, and I haven't heard anything from them since then, nor do I want to. I do like Zeppelin, all the albums, but live, I feel they were rather haphazard, and live, is where Purple reigns! As far as Sabbath goes, I have all the Ozzy & Dio albums, saw them many times, but they don't even rank in my opinion. Iommi however, is a fine guitarist, but one outstanding band member, does not a band make. Purple however, the nucleus was an inimitable powerhouse of Hard Rock, nobody would dare dispute that!

‘The sainted Led Zeppelin’ as viewed by certain members of the music press in the 90’s. Ditto the original Black Sabbath line up, get the cap doffed in their direction. Deep Purple MK2 or nothing, fan mindset. I gravitated towards MK3 and MK4 D.P from the mid 80’s, ditto Dio-Sabbath.When I read a review of that era of those acts it was mostly laced with barbs,in mainstream magazines like Q etc. The Rock/Metal press were generally more fairer in their reviews. It can all get very tribal.Snotty OGWT presenter ripping into Deep Purple reforming,Whitesnake getting a ribbing. I love to seeing that footage of David Coverdale paying OGWT back a year or so later in an interview. I do remember Jimmy Page and Roy Harper getting the treatment too on the OGWT. At that time those jurnos ruffled my feathers. When these jurno’s interviewed Bernie Marsden on their podcasts in recent times,it’s all pally-pally ..

UK (70's-80's) Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath
US (70's-80's) Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath
I would say that today due mostly to younger fans who weren't around in the 70's, 80's, 90's and who have been influenced more by newer Metal bands, they see Sabbath as more of a forerunner to their kind of music than DP & LZ which would explain why Sabbath is now first IMHO

Zeppelin were far more pioneering and eclectic compared to the other two. All 8 of their studio albums are classics (9 if you include Coda). They evolved, embraced different styles of music, experimented with different sounds and studio techniques. In effect, they were like the mid to late period Beatles. Purple really only had 2 classic albums, In Rock and Machine Head. Personally I’ve not explored too much Sabbath but I get the impression that they’re all about doom, gloom, death, grave yard music if you like, ie a bit one dimensional, but do correct me if I’m wrong.

Purple, particularly Hughes/Coverdale lineup. Zeppelin definitely had their moments, though the yelping vocals largely kept me at bay. And Sabbath I didn't get into at all, so not on my list.
Mind, I would take Glenn Hughes-era Trapeze above all of these.

Deep Purple (2 masterpieces - In Rock and Perfect Strangers, few good other albums, lots of good tunes elsewhere), 3. Led Zeppelin (2 masterpieces - first 2 albums - and then just a few good songs elsewhere).

Deepest Purple was where I came in, and I think, maybe because Deep Purple never introduced many new songs into their live setlist, the quality of their studio work has been overlooked. I think their songwriting is much better than they've been given credit for. So for me Deep Purple remain ins constant rotation, they are the band to which I feel the strongest emotional connection, and it's not even close. Led Zeppelin are second, but, beyond a couple of songs, their music doesn't really speak to me any more, and their songwriting has probably been overestimated, even if the performances in studio are great. I never really cared for Black Sabbath, apart from when Dio was in the band, so, while their legacy is clear to see, it doesn't mean that much to me.
