*How to encrypt your Android device* Read the full walkthrough: goo.gl/MLq2hv Your Android device is a pocket-size container of important information that you don’t want to fall into the wrong hands. No one wants to be in that vulnerable scenario. That’s why you can lock down your Android device with a combination of protective security measures, one of which is encryption, a pretty important one. Learn everything about what encryption is, how it works, and how you can encrypt your Android device from this guide. By ***** and Alvin Ybañez
If you choose to encrypt your android device, it may only take a few minutes if you have little storage used. For example, I have 3.12GB of used storage (internal) and it took five minutes maximum for my android to encrypt the data.
I would really appreciate some answers: - Do you need to wait long every time you power on a phone (my Nexus 5 with 16 Gb and it's almost completely filled with apps and music)? - Since it's the same password/pin for both unlock screen and decrypting on boot what's the point? If someone don't know PIN he can't access data anyway since the phone is locked (same for the PC mounted storage, can't access before unlocking the screen). So if someone don't know PIN he can't access anything anyways, and if he knows PIN he can access everything anyways (just by typing it on boot) so what's the point? What are the actual advantages? - Will I be able to receive normally updates of new Android versions? (Since new versions need to be installed from boot, and from boot everything is encrypted right?) - Does new music for example that I store on my phone after the encryption gets instantly encrypted too or it stays "unlocked"? (or any other data for that matter) - How much does it affect real life performance? I've read it can slow down your phone/tablet and I'm concerned cos I literally have always 95% filled storage space on my phone (so that means it will non-stop encrypt new things I store on it?). Thanks in advance, I've tried multiple forums but I haven't got any (useful) answers.
Late response, but I'll respond anyways. "Do you need to wait long every time you power on a phone (my Nexus 5 with 16 Gb and it's almost completely filled with apps and music)?" - Having your hard drive almost full is already slowing down your device. Adding encryption will add to the processes being used and will most likely slow it down further. It may be noticeable, or it may not be. It depends. "Since it's the same password/pin for both unlock screen and decrypting on boot what's the point? If someone don't know PIN he can't access data anyway since the phone is locked (same for the PC mounted storage, can't access before unlocking the screen). So if someone don't know PIN he can't access anything anyways, and if he knows PIN he can access everything anyways (just by typing it on boot) so what's the point? What are the actual advantages?" - No matter how your phone is protected, I can access the files through various means. However, if the device is encrypted, it would be harder to determine what is what based on the display of what is being shown to me. Whereas if it were not encrypted, it would be easier to determine what exactly I'm viewing, accessing, and trying to steal from your device. The phone's lock screen is not the only way into your device. "Will I be able to receive normally updates of new Android versions? (Since new versions need to be installed from boot, and from boot everything is encrypted right?)" - Yes, you would still be able to receive the new Android versions. "Does new music for example that I store on my phone after the encryption gets instantly encrypted too or it stays "unlocked"? (or any other data for that matter)" - Anything that you add to your device in the encrypted hard drive would be encrypted. It's not the files themselves that are technically being encrypted, but the hard drive. "How much does it affect real life performance? I've read it can slow down your phone/tablet and I'm concerned cos I literally have always 95% filled storage space on my phone (so that means it will non-stop encrypt new things I store on it?)." - This was pretty much your first question. Refer to the above response.
Encrypting your phone makes it much harder to break in with Forensic tools.. And is especially useful with unlocked BLs.. With an unlocked BL, you can just delete a few files with twrp/cwm and then you can get access to your whole phone. Which is also possible on an locked BL by desoldering storage chip.. With encryption no one can access your phone whether it's locked BL or not without knowing your PIN/PW/pattern. They can only get your encrypted data but not decrypted.
Very interesting! This video taught me that I do not want to use encryption on my tablet. It could be a very good tool, I agree. I am all for security. It just sounds like too much work. Besides, couldn't "someone" just obtain your decryption password?
I was thinking to encrypt my phone and then factory reset it before selling it so would the buyers be able to use phone after buying but not accessing or retrieving my data?
Hi. I started to encrypt my htc phone, than because didn`t knew what is that, I stopped. Now my phone is not working : ` Encryption unsuccessful `. I tryed to factory restore but still this message ... What can I do now ?
Question. i use Dropbox alot to move files or i connect my phone to pc via cable, how will this affect me moving photos or videos ive taken on my phone and getting them to the PC? also if i Dropbox or cloud storage images or videos or even files from my phone and then access them from a remote computer how will this encryption effect that?
@androidauthority so I tried encrypting my htc one max running android 5.0.2 ( memory used on phone is abt 16gb) with a 6 digit pin and so far it has failed to reboot and commence the encryption. all it shows me is the green android without any other message (it does not say encrypting or show me the progress bar). its been like this for 8 hours. what should I do? wait or restart the phone?
I am about to send away my phone, and do not want others to see my personal info. First off, how does encrypt affect previous factory reset? will that data also be encryptet? How about this, I do a factory reset so all data become "deleted", then fill the phone to max with all kinds off apps, so it shall overwrite the deleted personal files. After that I do a encrypt and after that I do a another factory reset and while I have to write my previous gmail account I do not have to log in with it, so I just do not do that. I am secure then?
when l open mebile setting and go to encryption areas there ie all ready showing that "yor phone is encrypted" it is actual encrypted or not plz tol me

Having this feature equipped into a phones is exactly why Android touch screen sensitivity sucks. My Galaxy was always butt clicking things it shouldn't have never would I think it'd go into settings find click Encrypt Phone and butt dial a pin I am completely unaware of. This is so unfair.
Question: after enabling this, does this encrypt any communication going from/to the android device? even like the facebook messenger app messages or other social media?
No, it doesn't. The service you use needs to offer end-to-end encryption. I would suggest using Signal (available on both Android and iOS) if privacy is very important to you, as it's an open-source app that undergoes frequent third-party audits. If your contacts don't have Signal, you can also settle down for WhatsApp, which is also a very good option, despite it being owned by Facebook, as most people have WhatsApp. Now, in regards to Facebook Messenger itself, the service *does* offer end-to-end encryption. They have a feature called ‘secrer conversations’. Here's a link by Facebook explaining their feature: m.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/811527538946901?refid=69
Is there a phone that you can purchase that will automatically encrypt your text messages, voicemail, email, and internet... PLS HELP I NEED THAT KIND OF CELL PHONE
I'm not using a lock screen password but Encryption is turned on in Security under Settings on my Android phone. I may have accidentally turned it on as I was looking at things in the Security section for the heck of it. I can't turn it off. Is it true on newer Androids it is already set to on? It didn't start going through any processing thing just now but I'm worried if I turn off my phone and back on again I won't have access to my phone. Since I didn't set any lock screen password can I still access my phone with Encryption being on?Again I don't know if I just now turned Encryption on but I can't turn it off. I wish I hadn't looked at the security section as I think I accidentally turned it on but don't know if it already was on. Again I'm worried I won't be able to get back into my phone even if I didn't set a password and lockscreen with Encryption being on. Please help.

If encryption only works when the device is off, then why did the FBI have trouble with that iPhone? Was it already off before they got a hold of it? Or does the iPhone stay encrypted not only at boot?
The encryption works at all times. Booting it and entering the decryption key, simply causes temporary decryption. The files are still encrypted, no matter if the device is off or on. When you boot an encrypted device and don't have the key, you can't read any of its files. When the FBI got hold of that phone, it was encrypted and they didn't have the key, so they could not access any of its files. Of course, forcing decryption is possible, but the more complicated the key and encryption algorithm is, the more times it'll take, for example if you were to encrypt something with AES-256 encryption (which is also used by the pentagon nowadays) and a key that has 8 characters, decrypting it by force would take about two decades.
One thing that I always been wondered is encryption on a phone with a sd card. If my phone dies or I want to take out the sd card and connect it to my computer, can I do that?

My phone is huawei and it keep saying encryption unsuccessful and want me to reset phone I tried the steps to system recovery but after I reboot it still comes back to encryption unsuccessful, what should I do help me pls...
Can a rooted encrypted Oneplus One with ADB enabled running official CyanogenOS (build 01/01/2016) with latest TWRP custom recovery that requires password on startup in system as well as recovery be hacked or cracked?
Of course it can, but the point of encryption is not that it makes a device unhackable, but that the files will become unreadable and useless in every way, so that no one can access your data even if they were to steal and hack it. With the way you have set it up, it would take quite a while to crack it, but it would be doable. Forcing decryption is possible as well, but it takes time to do that. A LOT of time. For example cracking the encryption of a device that has AES-256 encryption with an 8 characters key would take about two decades, even if you were to use a supercomputer.
+Alexander Mercer So, the phone can be removed from my Android Device Manager by the hacker who has the phone? Correct me if I am wrong, but an iPhone can't log in into different apple account unless logged out with password by the previous user. Doesn't android implement such a safety check?
+NipunShrivastav Your device can be removed from the Android Device Manager, if the person who stole it can trick your phone into thinking that it is actually connected to your computer, instead of theirs. You see, through USB debugging, it's possible to do pretty much everything unhindered, HOWEVER when you use a debug command from the computer which it is connected to, and if it's unlocked at the moment, it'll ask if that computer is yours/whether it can be trusted. You, at one time, probably when you rooted it, got that notification and pressed "yes". At that moment, your details about your computer were added to the list that your phone labels as "authorized devices", i.e. authorized to use adb commands to manipulate the phone. What a thief would have to do, is trick the phone into accepting false information about his computer - information which would have to match yours. It would take a while, but it can be done. And after he gets the details right, the phone will allow him to use any adb command the thief wants, such as commands to fully erase Android Device Manager from the phone, or to change TWRP's code or to install a different recovery entirely. This, however, would only be the case if you don't erase all your data after it being stolen. If you do erase all the data, the list of authorized devices will be deleted and then, there'd be no way to trick your phone into giving in, and it would be truly unhackable (at least, that is as far as I can tell). It's actually more secure than Apple's idea as faking those identifying details is A LOT harder to get right, than a password, but it's still hackable.
+Alexander Mercer I have been constantly checking my phone on Android Device Manager after it was stolen. But I checked it today after a month or so and my stolen device has disappeared from device manager, though I can still see it in the menu to hide and unhide devices at play.google.com/settings. Any idea why this might be happening? Thanks for the detailed replies. Appreciate it.
Maybe whoever stole it, managed to hack it. Devices stay in your Google Play, even if your account is no longer associated with them - Google's algorithm assumes that if a phone associated with the account x, doesn't go online for a long time, that there's no other reason behind it, it assumes that that device has just been unable to go online, instead of assuming that it's no longer using the same account. Two phones that I had a couple of years ago still appear in my settings, even though I haven't used them in almost two years, and they're not even associated with my account anymore. And as you, I can not affect the listed devices in any way, either. They're just "ghosts" - a mere hint that that account was once associated with the listed device.
But when YOU turn on your device and enter your decryption key , you have the screenlock code. But are the files not encrypted when you booted the android device ? How encrypted are your files when you have booted ?

Useful, but I'll just stick with not putting in data that can be used to harm me.
Thats why after encrypting you factory reset it to delete forever

Depends of your model. On newer devices it's allow to use patterns or biometrics. Anyway, Android mustn't let you encrypt without a PIN or password
hey how to hide the power off opition when phone is locked ? in case of pattern lock or password lock..
pls tell me something
Well for old Android versions..
Lockscreen Protector, Smart Lockscreen Protector
For newer modern Android
Cerberus Lockscreen Protector.

OK what can you do when you just start up your tablet and you see this message, type password to decrypt storage , when u did nothing to it?
Will it effect phone bill
No, why would it??
Would this work on BLU or any other Chinese phones from stealing your data from within the phone itself ?
Good question
