I think the Playboy crowd was kinda progressive in many respects, they were early to embrace gay rights as well. I guess they had a "rebel" label by the rest of society and as such gravitated towards others who went against the grain and said something different.
Exactly, saying and singing "I'm Black..." Weren't trying to actually be Black. You should here some of the lyrics they say and sing today. Use to be fighting words back in the day.
