Daddy Doggie was NEVER this protective in the original cartoon. I guess that since Augie's a girl now, he has to be more protective and keeping her safe.
Everyone had their personalities exaggerated for comical effect. It's like how Yogi Bear was always obsessed with food, but never to the point where he ate people.
Their just exagerating the fact that they always seem together, him being over protective isnt such a far off conclusion from the original. It doesnt have to do with gender.

Most of the comments are kinda... Wow. No offense but does everything have to be by the book with these people that complain about Jabberjaw and Augie? CH Greenblatt wanted to try something new with what was already becoming a forgotten era of Cartoons. The changes are in no way a bad thing, if anything it breathes new life in these older works
I think my only issue is that, with some of the gender swapped characters, they don't keep the original unique voices they had with them, and replace it with a generic voice instead. Like, for example, Jabberjaw had this unique voice to himself (though, it could get grating), but now the new Jabberjaw just sounds like a generic, sassy woman. I wouldn't have minded this, but they go out of their way to keep a bunch of other characters' voices the same or similar to their original counterparts. Yogi's voice is similar, Boo Boo's is similar, Huckleberry Hound is nearly identical, hell, even Doggie Daddy's is almost spot on. If the voice actress tried to do something a bit more similar to the original voice of Jabberjaw, I would be fine with it.

A lot of us grew up with these characters, so it makes sense why we feel some sort of deep association with them. I remember when Cartoon Network first came on the air and, at the time, to actually watch these shows on an all cartoon channel was revolutionary. That said, the cartoon network fanbase fractured with the introduction of new cartoons (cow and chicken, dexter's lab, and ppg), because some fans honestly thought that cartoon network was meant to be the Turner Classic Movies of animation. The gender swaps, though, don't really matter for me, but my issue is that changing the gender isn't really fresh anymore (adventure time did it 9 years ago). I mean, Jabberjaw being female is fine, but what else is there that makes the character stand-out. There needs to be something more and I truly hope they will do more with the character in upcoming seasons.

I get it, he's protective of Augie, but it just sounds like he always, ALWAYS, wants to be around his growing daughter 24/7/365. He was never a helicopter parent in the old cartoons and series. In fact, he's just a dotting Daddy, proud of his son (From the cartoons and series) of all he's done; from making friends his own way to being a genius. Speaking of which, kinda disappointed that not only is Augie a girl, but also lost her brilliant "Boy genius" ability. Overall, I missed the Father/Son dynamic Doggie and Augie had in the old series and shorts. This version of Doggie and Augie's just...I dunno, it's cute, but Doggie's overbearingness is as annoying as Timmy Turner's parents' neglectful and ignorant nature of Timmy's abusive babysitter and creepy stalking teacher.
if you want all the characters to be written the exact way they used to be why not just watch the originals. id rather see them try new things than hash old concepts over and over again, even if it doesn't "hit" every single time at least it's something new
That's honestly valid. I can't say I'm really attached to Augie since I barely remember ther og show, but I'm personally all for the interpretation as it's still funny to me and keeps the general theme I barely remember from my childhood. It's not 1:1 but I hardly expected that. I prefer the gender swapping over forcing new female characters and they didn't swap characters who's "core" centered around them being dudes. Imagine a doggy daddy turned doggy mommy or top cat being cat called instead. Not to say these are bad ideas to try one day, but the characters they did swap aren't too different from their og genders...which makes sense if the idea is to make boy and girl viewers feel equally as included.

They are in THIS series. The creators wanted to have a more diverse cast so they gender flipped some of the male characters. But If that is something you can’t overlook, don’t worry, this does not erase the older shows. You are still free to Watch the classic cartoons whenever you want. This is just the animators doing something new with something old.
I believe the reason for the gender change is so there can be more balance. Doesn't help that 90% of the Hannah barbara characters are dudes. While the personalities are different for some of the characters, id say it still fits for what the show is supposed to be: a simplified, goofy reimagining for kids. Changes had to be made so that the characters could better fit the show. The changes don't really matter to me as the characters are funny, engaging, and still have some core aspects of their original selves.

They are in THIS series. The creators wanted to have a more diverse cast so they gender flipped some of the male characters. But If that is something you can’t overlook, don’t worry, this does not erase the older shows. You are still free to Watch the classic cartoons whenever you want. This is just the animators doing something new with something old.
Think of this as an alternative universe, like how Harvey Birdman was.

For unknown reasons they changed the gender and personalities of these classic characters. This totally ruined them.

I believe the reason for the gender change is so there can be more balance. Doesn't help that 90% of the Hannah barbara characters are dudes. While the personalities are different for some of the characters, id say it still fits for what the show is supposed to be: a simplified, goofy reimagining for kids. Changes had to be made so that the characters could better fit the show. The changes don't really matter to me as the characters are funny, engaging, and still have some core aspects of their original selves.
How does it change it whatsoever? Jabberjaw is still a helpless dumbass even now that she’s a trans woman

This is (and was thank God) the most awful interpretations of Hanna Barbera cartoons I have ever seen.
