All the jokes about "Yeah, nobody watches this" "Maybe if yo uadveritsed it" hit hard considering that right now, in 2024, is the FIRST TIME I AM EVER HEARING OF THIS.
I remember the show when it aired but since boomerang was running the original Wacky Races in conjunction with the new series many people decided not to watch it.
That joke doesn't really work because Peter Perfect objectively was not the main character of the original Wacky Races. Dastardly, Penelope, and the Ant Hill mob all had more screentime and focus than Peter ever got, and Peter also only came first in the races sometimes and just generally was clearly a supporting character. That line feels like it was written by someone who never watched the original show but just saw the name "Peter Perfect" out of context and assumed with a name like that he must be the protagonist.
"Nobody watches this." "Maybe if you advertised it." It's so sad how accurate those jokes are considering this is the first time I've ever even heard of this.
in a really roundabout way, team rocket was inspired by dastardly and muttley (wacky races was crazy popular in japan when it aired there) so it wouldn't be so farfetched. dick was also the only one who broke the fourth wall back in the OG show by talking to the narrator.
They should of went with the "Wacky Races forever" cartoon instead of making this. It would of been much more interesting. ( I also wouldn't re-colour Dastardly to purple, because it kind of became cliché for villains to have purple outfits).
Wacky Races 2017 was what Velma should've been. The show made plenty of jokes at itself, but it also respected the source material while being different enough from the original to stand on its own. The show knew how to be fun and didn't settle for mean-spirited lowbrow jokes and characterizations. Who would've thought Whacky Races would have a superior self-aware reboot over Scooby-Doo?
@nashwolf1731 sure was! It was from the 70s, and it was one of Hanna Barbara's more popular shows. Not Yogi Bear or Scooby-Doo levels of lasting power, but at least as popular as Huckleberry Hound and QuickDraw McGraw. Dick Dastardly and Mutley got their own spin-off show. As did Penelope Pitstop. And Dick Dastardly even kinda became HB's most iconic bad guy, usually being the main protagonist in several crossovers of theirs.
As the guy who made the former No Context Wacky Races account I'm so happy to see that this show is finding some retroactive attention. These *definitely* reminded me of the fourth wall breaks from the Steven Spielberg cartoons and I wouldn't be surprised if people from the show moved to the Animaniacs reboot. If there's anything I dislike I think the writers seem a bit too worried that these jokes aren't going to go over well, and like... guys, this is great writing, don't get down on yourselves like that.
Oh it's you ! You had deleted your account just when I joined the fandom ! I made another Out of Context account which I allowed myself to call your spritual successor lol glad you are happy to see more people are enjoying the franchise, it recently got many more looks !
Fun Fact: The Dastardly seen in this show is canonically the decedent of the Dastardly of the original, who in turn is the canonical decedent of the one from Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines.
The whole sequence of comedic bullshit immediately following the line "Just random acts of pointless violence" had me fucking heaving and laughing like Muttley for near on half an hour straight.
I am so disappointed...in myself for not discovering this *_gem_* of a show sooner! Before Boomerang's rebrand, I would watch the channel 24/7 whenever I had the time. Every morning while my mom was getting me ready for school, I would always watch an episode of Wacky Races during breakfast because that's when it was on. It became one of my favorite shows of all time and in a way, it sparked my love of classic cartoons. Even after the rebrand, I remained loyal to Boomerang because it still aired some of my favorite shows like The Looney Tunes Show and Grojband, for a while anyway. But then my family moved to a different house and got a new TV plan that didn't provide the channel, so I was out of the loop for a few years. I'm just now learning that a lot of new shows started airing on Boomerang primarily, shows that had a lot of potential but didn't get a lot of recognition thanks to poor advertisement. Among them was Bunnicula, Wabbit, and the Wacky Races reboot, which I didn't even know existed until about a week ago because it's not on TV. I tried to watch it on HBO Max but it had been taken down for some reason, so now I can't find any full episodes of the show. I did find a couple on Dailymotion, but there wasn't very much. I realize this means I can't really speak much on behalf of the show, but from the dozens of five-minute clips I've seen, I can tell that this show was incredible. Sure not all of the episodes revolve around racing, but I think that's the best part of this show! In the original series we didn't get to learn much at all about the racers personalities and lives outside of the races. Now we can learn more about their families and backstories and actually explore them as characters, even newcomers like I.Q. And my personal favorite, all the racers act like a found family both on and off the track. They're always together and know each other so well. They even throw Dastardly a bone every now and then. I'm so sorry to the cast and crew who worked on this show for ignoring their hard work, this show deserved so much more than what it got. I can only hope that it finds a life in the reruns.
I think it's a mockery of the "jr" versions of cartoons that started to be made in the mid 80s, ie. Muppet Babies, A Pup named Scooby Doo, Tiny Toons etc.
Indeed. I was once put off by the removal of many of the main racers, as well as its status as a reboot (as at the time, I started becoming wary of any reboot with Warner Bros. or Cartoon Network's name on it), but I have accepted it, as that way, it helped the reboot focus on the more popular characters that are still fan favorites to this day (like Dick, Peter, and Penelope) while actually evolving from its roots of being solely racing and having the racers go on misadventures (and doing it better than Teen Titans Go ever did). Heck, the Hong Kong Phooey crossover episode felt like it could have been a backdoor pilot for a Hong Kong Phooey reboot (as it was amazing, even Phil LaMar, who voices the WR2017 Hong Kong Phooey, and is best known for voicing Samurai Jack, did a good job voicing the kung fu pooch).
@@ivoneo2806 it's not just for kids. They wouldn't have these meta jokes and references only adults and fans of the original series(that is predominantly made up of adults)if it really was just for kids. This show, like others, treats itself like any normal show, and that's what I am doing. So that's what I am going to do, and I just so happen to not like it.
I get the feeling the writers were resentful of the fact the show was hardly promoted and so no one knew the show existed and the execs did everything possible to prevent anyone from even finding the show
I just want to ask... why? Execs are paying to have it made to just throuw it out? Was it some tax exemption or something? Because pretty sure that'd be some kind of tax fraud if that was the case by intentionally making a product fail.
@@archmagemc3561One answer is to keep the IP "fresh" with new content in order to stave off claims of non-usage and to stave off potential copyright losses.
4:38-5:14 This kind of rant is such a perfect callout to critics who seem to use certain things that are actually likable as some target to criticize about. Also, Dastardly makes a pretty great point about how low makers of entertainment are willing to sink to these days.
2:46-2:56 This rant also perfectly captures how some people make a habit of throwing insults to stuff they constantly watch yet barely pay attention to. Seriously, it's a waste of time.
Uploaded 4 years ago. Just hitting the algorithm now. All-in-all 7 years too late. Great job Warner Bros., I would've actually liked watch this if I knew where to find it. (Contrary to the rest of the comment section I actually did know this existed. I just forgot all about it.)
WR 2017 was a great reboot for WR. 1st season wasn't the best but once it found it's footing, it became great. The writers, animators, and cast (even though it's mostly Tom Kenny as anyone that isnt the main racers minus Bela) shitting on the execs and addings tons of little references. Even basing entire episodes surronding other series with Hong Kong Phooey and the court one with Hooded Claw. I wish this show didn't end up cancelled, the finished storyboards [with voice acting] would have made for a great new season
Hanna Barbera usually nails their reboots. Idk what the hell happened with Velma, but this and Jellystone! are really solid reboots. Maybe they should stick to kids stuff, it forces them to be creative to avoid censors.
@HeftyDan no, they are not. The references in this are predictable and done before. It's no longer a novelty and now just does the same stuff in many modern cartoons with the repetitive meta humor and nostalgia references. I've seen it all before. I will continue to say that almost EVERY animated reboot is not good. This one is boring and so-so once you get past the novelty at first of meta jokes and references. At their core, they are no better than most other cartoon shows now.
I don't know bruh, but I feel that for the wacky races reboot at least that it's cynical and self referential tone actually works in its favor and makes its greater arcing narrative of higher ups and executives fucking over the creatives in the entertainment industry a whole lot stronger than hurt it. If you are entering the reboot expecting a cell by cell adaptation of the original, you are bound to be disappointed. The wacky races reboot really isn't a "reboot" in the traditional sense because the show makes it clear that those racers ARENT the original ones but the descendants of the og kinda forced to be their to make profit. In a way, they are almost self inserts for the creatives in the animation industry and if you approach the reboot as more of a critique of the modern entertainment industry than an actually reboot your bound to find it a whole lot more engaging. Perhaps give wr2017 a second go because in their case, their self referential and deprecating tone really was what made the show for me because it just WORKED.
agreed with all that! perhaps my wording was a bit too strong- I meant "downfall" ironically, because watching the show in hindsight to its cancellation actually made its own cancellation jokes more funny to me. it almost sounded like they knew they'd be canceled for dumb reasons in the future. but I hope this vid isnt taken the wrong way! I enjoyed the show a lot personally bc of its meta humor. I wish more animation fans could give it a chance. Looking over my description I think I can see where my wording went wrong, I'll be fixing that.
@@pergrogly4136 oh, well then sorry about that! Its just that i always tend to get wary when people criticize a reboot because most of the time it just boils down to "its new and i don't like that" but its great to see other fans of wr2017!
@@theslotherin1831 Oh def! And yeah it's a common complaint, esp for people who didn't even give this show a chance. But it's odd how these reboots work- a show like TTG can be hated so much, and yet the animaniacs reboot is very popular and liked. Perhaps it really does boil down to writing, expectations, and sticking with the old show's strengths and characterizations. In wr's case, the show does go in a new direction compared to the old one, but it's like what the characters say in this video- some of the jokes and ideas have been run into the ground by this point, and now the same jokes are mocked and parodied within the show. The show even mocks racing at several points, including the fact that many of their episodes sidetrack from the races- which isn't a new concept since the old show did the same thing multiple times. I personally thought the change was good, and it does follow some of the beats of current shows, which isn't necessarily a bad thing imo. Sure its not as action-y as the wacky races forever pilot, but I thought it was fine as its own thing. I can write a whole essay on this lol.
Is it ever specified that these aren't the original racers? There's one episode where it's revealed "Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines" Dastardly is the grandfather of this Dastardly, but that's the only thing I can think of. I recall a couple episodes implying these are indeed the same racers. I agree with you that the show is a lot of fun.
Damn, the writers of this show knew how to waste the executives' time and resources on a show everyone on the team knew nobody would watch. Well played.
“What we need is something so simple that even an American audience can instantly grasp the concept.” “Like… racing?” “Something with incredibly simple rules and pointless danger.” “Like racing!” “Something with cool cars we can make toys of.” “He’s going to say racing.” “Something fast!” “He’s going to say racing..” “Something furious!” “He’s going to say racing.” “Something like…” “ *RACING!* “
Eh, it may have had its bad moments, but I liked the metahumor this show had. Self-deprecation in shows like this are pretty common, it's like the writer's way of criticizing their own show's faults by winking at the audience. Is it annoying when it happens often and the writers do nothing about it to improve the writing- maybe, but at least I'm still laughing at the humor of it all.
Man Dastardly held NOTHING BACK when he was calling out parents who complain about what their kids are watching but also refuse to parent them. This clip needs to become popular just for that bit
The "downfall" was because it and other shows were cancelled not because of views but because of a change of execs that cancelled all shows, in fact it was even greenlit for its last season. And I don't see how self derision is a low humor, a LOT of movies and shows do and that adds a good self aware criticism given by a crew that wants to give quality (because that's like NOT the main focus and the best jokes are nlt related to this, sad if you look just at that) all while poking fun at greedy execs who don't care. That's just being a killjoy at this point
you can check out my previous reply! I agree with your comment too. yeah i think the show was canceled due to the at&t merger, which caused a number of shows to be canceled including venture bros. we'll just have to see where the future goes with future ips, such as tiny toons and jellystone. i love humor like this. reminds me a lot of the type of humor found in the old animaniacs cartoons.
just like samurai jack got cancelled for no reason by female ceo the rating s were fine until she cancelled it, not just samurai jack along with good shows getting cancelled also no reason
I’d be mad too if my Cartoon Network Studios show didn’t air on CN, and instead was left to die on boomerang. All that said, they should’ve put the Slag Bros in there. They would’ve gotten renewed for like 6 seasons at least.
You’re telling me the Ant Hill Mob wouldn’t do the reboot because of PAY CUTS?! So Dick Dastardly, Penelope, Peter, the gruesome twosome- they weren’t being fucking paid their original wage? 💀
Dastardly would have won a good number of the races if he didn't go out of his way to set traps and cheat in both series. He's a quite competent and skilled driver, and the Mean Machine is an advanced car with an aerodynamic design. It's a shame that playing fair takes the fun out of it for him, because he'd such an edge over the other racers if he played by the rules.
My idea for pilots for the next Wacky Races Cartoon: Dick Dastardly and Muttley Peter Perfect Penelope Pitstop The Ant Hill Mob (This time they are in a limousine or a more modern gangsters vehicle) A replacement for The Red Baron, who is a Top Gun-esque rebel (In contrast to Peter's gentleman approach, he is trying to seduce Penelope) A family of anthropomorphic rabbits on a machine called The Warren Wagon Sergeant Blast (who is afraid of hippies, tell me if that's in character for him) and Private Meekly Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth The Slag Brothers Pat Pending with his mad scientist personality from the "Wacky Races Forever" pilot (IQ is his nephew) The Gruesome Twosome (Bella is female like in the unaired pilot of Wacky Races Forever) Lazy Luke and Blubber Bear Captain RubyBeard, a mermaid pirate with a crew of fishes, pirate versions of Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian and can evoke a Kraken Your thoughts and suggestions for their personalities?
I am not sure on all episode but I do know there are some times he did get a win usually through a bet he makes with Peter Perfect the first was in the Cold Rush episode mentioned, Peter made a with Dick Dastardly to go the whole race without cheating and if he won Peter would wear a pink tutu, even though the race was ruined Dastardly still won the bet. The other one which is also a legit racing win was the Good Sportsmanship charity drive where Peter bet him to be nice for the whole race while suffering the feeling of goodness Dick won by not only completing the challenges but he sacrificed his chance to win to avoid hitting a stand full of babies and kittens and since the race was about being a good sport he was declared the winner due to Penlope disguised Pandora not being a good sport.
The thing is in one episode he did legitimately win, but they showed a tape of him cheating making him lose. It's why he doesn't just try to win the race despite having the faster car
2:52 oh yes! The racers who didn't got to return, I see! My favorite wacky racer is Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth w/ the Buzzwagon, and I'm disappointed that them, along with the other removed racers, didn't return.
Hope that this show gets a new season. Sure the script is not as deep or thought-provoking but it's not as clichey as it used to be, the animation frames are unique/not reusing the same model drawings over & over, it doesn't have the bean-mouth style and the jabs/4th wall jokes are funnier.
Glad to see another fan! Unfortunately, however, the reboot was canceled a while ago, and the last episode aired around the end of 2019. Some of the animatics for the third season are available on the director's vimeo site, linked in the description.

I feel the main problem of this series was not just because it way too cynical and self-aware (even though that is a major issue with this series), but also because it was trying to be like every single story-telling cartoon, see in my opinion what made the original Wacky Races so good was that it focused on broadcasting an animated competition with cartoony antics in it rather than telling a cohesion story, this what I like to call "A Competition Cartoon", and other examples include "Yogi's Space Race", "Laff-A-Lympics", "Fender Bender 500", & even the "Total Drama" series (before they made all the characters toddlers with "Total Dramarama"), and it's a real shame they're not done as much anymore, cause the original plan for the original Wacky Races is that fans would guess who'd win this upcoming week's show, and if they got it right, they could be eligible to win prizes, and I really wish they'd do that in recent years, hell when I first saw the pilot to the Disney Junior show "Mickey & the Roadster Racers" known as "Race for the Rigatoni Ribbon", where Mickey & the gang race in Italy, I really thought that was going to be the formula for each episode, Mickey & the Gang car racing around the world with all kinds of cartoony stuff going on, but no it's just a basic educational slice of life cartoon with a car racing theme, and that was really disappointing for me, also I like to imagine that in the late 60s/early 70s, neighborhood fathers would get together and gather around the tv with their kids every saturday morning to watch the show, and actually place bets on the wacky races, do you know what I mean?
That's a wholesome thought, def. You can look at my comments above about what I think about the show not being a competition show, but yeah the show is a different tone to what it was before, and it really did depend on the direction the writing and storytelling team were going with. the 2017 show was rather similar to other animated shows premiering at the time (very comedy and story based), but at the same time it was doing its own thing. I agree, some of the humor and ideas were heavyhanded, but I liked how the show just went off and pretty much said "no ones watching this anyway, lets just write crazy stuff" which I found was interesting. The humor felt very reminiscent to older 90s cartoons to me with it being self aware, plus the fact that the show didn't have any story arcs yet it had plenty of recurring characters. I accepted it as it was, and found myself enjoying it, but its not for everyone, definitely
@@pergrogly413690s cartoons were never THIS self aware. Plus, the show did all that comedy while still having the tone that people are watching this show. Less people watching is not an excuse for terrible writing and terrible joke writing and just doing whatever. The show still treats itself as a Wacky Races installment. If doesn't want to be Wacky Races, why is it being Wacky Races? It only did things different by being more meta and referencing it's original show. It's kinda like Teen Titans Go but with different characters and less gross out and unfunny weird humor but instead more derivative meta humor. I mean, the characters don't even feel like their own unique characters that much. Just empty boring vessels to speak meta jokes and references out of. The same problem Teen Titans Go has ironically.
It's not that they didn't want to be wacky races, it's that they couldn't be. It's even referred to in this video. They can't pull off half the stuff they want to because of legal bs and executive meddling. @@william3100
@@william3100 I doubt that the series is bad to watch, I watched like 39 of these episodes and finished the 39th episode a few hours ago. I have not seen much meta jokes in the show nor has it and it's writing affect the quality of the show. Which episode did you dislike?
This show would have to change the competition episodes eventually, let's say there would be 10 episodes that are all competitions and you decide to watch them all since they have the same plot-point, same gimmicks and nothing of substance to be added to make the series fun and exciting. Would you rather watch that or a series that involves plots where you would get to know these character with different plots, a variety of jokes (mostly pain related, which are often pretty funny)
I actually enjoy how unhinged this revival could be, but what really sucks is that there was an unfinished episode that perfectly captured how insufferable nostalgic fans can be when things don't turn out the way they want and take their anger out on the overworked creative team instead of just accepting things for what they are. That story came from a very real place of personal experience and it resulted in the funniest episode in the entire series that should've been finished before the reboot got axed.
"you havent actually watched the new episodes have you"
"well its hard to find..."
damn, even the writers know no one watches their show
The thing with the babies was such a stab at every reboot ever.
At least the racers themselves knew that it was stupid.
I think it's a mockery of the "jr" versions of cartoons that started to be made in the mid 80s, ie. Muppet Babies, A Pup named Scooby Doo, Tiny Toons etc.
pup named and tiny toons were good tho@@hypnotised-clover
I didn't even know this was a show, that's how good the marketing was.
I totally didn't learn this show exists this very moment
Honestly, this show was very underrated. The jabs at executives and haters really make my day.
I kinda disagree but Not really for ttg when one is just for kids like it was unecessary imo@@jeremyriley1238

@@william3100 no?and it's not really terrible, like it just for kids

The irony in the fact they failed to advert this and people are only now hearing about it
WR 2017 was a great reboot for WR. I wish this show didn't end up cancelled, the finished storyboards [with voice acting] would have made for a great new season
thhhhhiiiiiisssss
Unfortunately episode 14 season 2 wiki is canceled season 3 but i found lost episodes season 3
At their core, they are no better than most other cartoon shows now.
welll mostly Tom Kenny and Billy West lol

Eh, it may have had its bad moments, but I liked the metahumor this show had. Is it annoying when it happens often and the writers do nothing about it to improve the writing- maybe, but at least I'm still laughing at the humor of it all.

You’re telling me the Ant Hill Mob wouldn’t do the reboot because of PAY CUTS?! So Dick Dastardly, Penelope, Peter, the gruesome twosome- they weren’t being fucking paid their original wage? 💀
you'd figure the ant hill mob would steal their money, being criminals and all
I didn't knew this reboot were soo self aware
Kinda makes me watch it
Dastardly would have won a good number of the races if he didn't go out of his way to set traps and cheat in both series. He's a quite competent and skilled driver, and the Mean Machine is an advanced car with an aerodynamic design. It's a shame that playing fair takes the fun out of it for him, because he'd such an edge over the other racers if he played by the rules.
My idea for pilots for the next Wacky Races Cartoon:
Dick Dastardly and Muttley
Peter Perfect
Penelope Pitstop
The Ant Hill Mob (This time they are in a limousine or a more modern gangsters vehicle)
A replacement for The Red Baron, who is a Top Gun-esque rebel (In contrast to Peter's gentleman approach, he is trying to seduce Penelope)
A family of anthropomorphic rabbits on a machine called The Warren Wagon
Sergeant Blast (who is afraid of hippies, tell me if that's in character for him) and Private Meekly
Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth
The Slag Brothers
Pat Pending with his mad scientist personality from the "Wacky Races Forever" pilot (IQ is his nephew)
The Gruesome Twosome (Bella is female like in the unaired pilot of Wacky Races Forever)
Lazy Luke and Blubber Bear
Captain RubyBeard, a mermaid pirate with a crew of fishes, pirate versions of Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian and can evoke a Kraken
Your thoughts and suggestions for their personalities?
Why not just use the classic group but with better cars still connecting with the old ones but with more characters@@mrrunodan8119

This show would have to change the competition episodes eventually, let's say there would be 10 episodes that are all competitions and you decide to watch them all since they have the same plot-point, same gimmicks and nothing of substance to be added to make the series fun and exciting. That story came from a very real place of personal experience and it resulted in the funniest episode in the entire series that should've been finished before the reboot got axed.
