This is the first Sweeney Todd who actually nods when Mrs Lovett asks if he'd come in for a pie, and if he'd like a drop of ale, a minor detail but it was something I'd come to wish for
This Sweeney Todd is not portrayed as angry as other actors usually do, in fact he acts nice and funny, and for me that's what make him more wicked. so, well done!!
The audience participation in this show is amazing. From Sweeney walking through the audience to Mrs. Lovett singing about an audience member during A Little Priest, I would be honoured to be in that audience
Your Sweeney in this production is particularly good! He’s actually got a sense of humor-dark and perverse, maybe, but a sense of humor nonetheless. His facial expressions were great, and what a voice he’s got! Fantastic!
So I recently received the role of Sweeney in my high school's musical. We are the first high school to attempt Sweeney in our district in the past 15 years give or take and I am not a man who has had any acting experience before. So there is a bit of pressure. But, watching your performance and interpretation has helped me tons in delving into the incredibly complex character that is Sweeney Todd. I appreciate your upload my man. Also, you have some of the raddest vocal production I have ever seen, it still blows my mind.
+Dazalaras Thanks! Glad that you're doing the show at the high school level. Recently here in Massachusetts a HS production was a source of some controversy as some administrators pulled the production due to content. Students of the production protested and even Steven Sondheim chimed in and eventually the production was reinstated. The main argument is that the story is not of just eating people pies, but the entire story is of love as different characters display the different levels of love. Also, that it is a social commentary on what the class system was like in the age of industrialization and how the upper class often exploited the lower class through their corruption of the power system. I hope you sing the crap out of the show and continue to check out my youtube channel. I have other productions of sweeney up and they may help even more. I found playing him multiple times rewarding.
+Bryon Gable Well I feel as though by the time the composer/writer steps in to say that that's not cool, that there isn't much to argue. lol. People down here are more amazed to see that a high school is attempting it. The largest obstacle for us currently is the administration not wanting us to say and do certain things, like sing the word "shit" or hand Anthony a pistol or a knife. The little stuff 😅
Well the S word isn't necessary, but the Fogg's Asylum scene may need to be reworked since it is the high school version. I believe the master script offers alternatives to the original. For example, the Judge's scenes are cut to a minimum due to the adult content. So, I'm sure Anthony holding a paper clip and/or a banana may be ok. lol.
Anadia Smith thank you. It was a great production and I’m hoping to portray Sweeney again real soon. Many from this production are off to incredible things! Pirelli is currently shrek. Antony played Jesus in jcs, I just got done with a run of playing the beast and Lovett has been in so many things you can’t believe. Others are off at college developing. We all appreciate your comment
Welp, I have returned to tell you how our opening night, happening just a few days ago, went. And dude I see why you have played Sweeney Todd so many times now. I mean before there was an audience this musical was tons of fun. but performing as Sweeney in front of 200 people that give back the energy that I threw out on stage was life changing. And given that it was a high school production. we ended up just replacing "shit" with "spit" and instead of the gun seen with Mr Fogg. Johanna just ends up pushing him to the lunatics who proceed to eat him. It was all good things. and with that. I can't thank you enough for posting the video of your performance still. Because it's helped me get into how the character feels and then more. Everybody who saw my depiction of Sweeney was in awe, and it just wouldn't have been possible without trying to live up to you. So thank you sir. Thank you.
I have never seen Sweeney Todd in person live (I have only seen the movie). Even though Mrs. Lovett is my dream role! Thank you SOOO much for posting this! It gave me an idea about the actual musical! Everyone in this did phenomenal!!
This is an AMAZING portrayal of the characters. The costumes and set is pretty good too. Usually when I want to see how good a Sweeny Todd production is, I’ll skip ahead to little priest. I’ll admit that the singing isn’t the best, but this version is delightfully entertaining regardless- which is the main purpose of a show.
Incredible performance! I had to watch this for a Drama assignment, but being someone who doesn't enjoy musicals much, I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it. However, right from the first line I was captivated! Great performance all around, and it's convinced me to give musicals a second chance. A stunning performance, especially from Sweeney Todd. Kudos all round
Great to hear that this helped you in your assignment and inspired you to give theater another shot! I wish you all the best as you try new things ~ Sweeney ;)
I loved this. I smiled and laughed so much. it was great. I can honestly say that I liked this a wee bit more than the Tim Burton movie. Great job to all of you lovely people.
possibly one of the best portrayals of Sweeney Todd and Mrs.Lovett I've ever seen! Well except for George Hearn. This is amazing great job! *standing ovation*
Wow that set was absolutely phenomenal! Brilliant casting and i love how you kept the Modern day version script alive! A Big hand for everyone involved in this production! Amazing!!!!
I'm not a big fan of musicals (with Sweeney Todd and Repo being exceptions) or plays, but I loved the Sweeney Todd movie, and I've gotta say, I love this version too! You guys did great!
I'm performing in Sweeney Todd come the summer of this year. I'm only in the ensemble, but I gotta say.. I'm very excited to be a part of this awesome show, and I cannot wait to finally make my debut in community theater. Yes, I'm doing Sweeney Todd as a Debut show.. In the words of our director to me, he said "This is going to be one monumental first show"
Ngl I was skeptical about this bc I only watch broadway clips but this absolutely fantastic, everyone is insanely talented and it’s an incredible production!!
Nice to see a version that includes the tooth pulling segment of “The Contest” (which was omitted from the original because it slowed down the fist half of the show); the Judge’s “Joanna” (which was cut as it was found to be too distressful - when performed with the self-flagellation, etc. - to preview audiences); and, “The Beggar Woman’s Lullaby” (which was later added to clue in the audience as to her identity before Sweeney recognizes her and what he’s done - to make his loss more poignant and tragic).
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this production! 😋 bryon you sing amazingly well and made me love the musical sweeney todd even more 😊 thank you again!
I’m just happy to see the tooth pulling scene and Mea Culpa...those are unfortunately left out of so many productions nowadays. Haven’t made it that far yet but PLEASE tell me Lucy Barker has that moment with Johanna’s reticule in the Final Sequence...those 3 elements make a complete Sweeney Todd production for me because they’re so often left out. (Edit: now that was different...I’ve never heard Lucy sing the Barber and his Wife melody before-what a pleasant surprise) This is also one of the better Sweeney/Anthony duets for Johanna II that I’ve heard. Too many times you hear the actors adding too much vibrato on the sustained notes which can totally throw the lovely harmonies off.
One of my all time favorite plays, portrayed impeccably. Sweeny was a bit less angry then other incarnations, which ironically made him scarier, though I wasnt a fan of Anthony, I dont think he was at par, but it was fantastic in all other areas.
Glad you enjoyed it! Been almost ten years! I haven’t had the pleasure of doing another Sweeney, but I’d love to! Glad to see you’re doing theater and Todd has a special place for you as well! Fly with wings ~ B
Okay, as of right now, I've watched up until Pretty Women, but not Epiphany. I love how much emotion and personality is put into the characters - I'm a huge buff and I could see some inspiration from Mr. Hearn, as well as parts from the movie and original script (the judge sentencing kids + the beadle talking about his ~sweet little annie~) which I've never seen before! So far, your Sweeney is on point! The quips and one liners are great. Gonna post this now and watch the rest. Finished it. That was amazing. So much talent in this, and so glad I was able to see it 😄
I've seen many versions of this musical, ranging from high school renditions, to a very high-quality concert version filmed in San Francisco in 2001 that featured a young Neil Patrick Harris as Toby, to Tim Burton's film version. While each interpretation had its strengths, and most had their weaknesses, this one has the best stage chemistry between Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett of any of them, IMHO.
This was absolutely phenomenal. I commend you for your work Bryon. I think that Johanna wasn't up to par, but I think thats because I'm picky because shes my dream role! I really loved your Anthony as well. Keep up the good work.
I wish more people would understand the beggar woman is not mean to be funny as much as shes meant to be an allusion to veneral diseases of the time. The reason I love this show so much is due to its beautiful immersion.
Love the "By the Sea" it's priceless but both actress. I love how this Sweeney is more comedic. I get he's mena to be the the straight man but this is a nice change :)
Bryon Gable Sweeney rocks!! :) Feel free to watch my videos as well! I have a few musical theatre videos on my channel. Hope you will enjoy! All the best! :) Cheers! Greetings from the Swede in London!
This was opening night. You can check out the final show through the links in the video or the link here. ua-cam.com/video/lyE3LGyEn0c/v-deo.html Not as many goof and wardrobe malfunctions ;)
Ha, good question. I believe the director wanted the people to resemble corpses hitting the ground. Like the actors were "zombies" or dead people. It woke some audience members up I'm sure.
Look During Johanna II(when I'm killing the guys getting shaved) I stumble and almost fall off as I'm dumping the body. Luckily, the chair weighs 200 lbs! (no glow tape either) Also, when I carry the begar woman my tight pants tear. I told the director they look nice, but as soon as I move they are a no go....oh well LIVE THEATER :)
Very good, but a couple things--having The Beggar Woman discover Johanna in the trunk was unintentionally funny. Then Johanna is halfway down the steps and she goes BACK UP when Sweeney calls? She's not STUPID.
This was an amazing performance. Interesting to see the newer performance compared to the team of George Hern and Angela Lansbery. You are an amazing Swweny. I am currently taking voice lessonsin hopes of Playing Sweeny and Inspector Javert. I will definitely reference your performance. I hope to maybe work with you one day sir. You are amazing. Any tips and suggestions are welcomed :)
+Disciple8923 Good luck on both endeavors. Check out my page for when I played Javert as well! Definitely two dream roles. As for advice, make the performances your own! If you are lucky enough to get cast find out who you are going to become! I always do a lot of research when approaching roles to ensure I know how to act. Other than that have fun!
I have never heard some of these songs were they added or are they just in some versions and not others (all the ones I’ve seen were like the George Hearn one)
@@chefbigdog3404 I see what you're saying. Yes, both those songs are in some productions cut. Pirelli's song often stops after the first verse and the Judge's song is in many communities viewed too risky. We decided to keep to the author's original intent.
It is truly up to the director and production team. They would sift through the copyright and decide what their vision was. I can tell you for a fact the role of Pirelli has been cast female so, I wouldn't rule out Toby.
I'm in the ensemble for a local theatre group that will be doing Sweeney Todd later this month and our Toby is played by a girl. I think she may be 16ish - she is able to drive. So don't let that stop you.
Hi Bryon! I want to start off by saying what a wonderful job you did! I would like to ask you what theater this was performed in and also where I could get information on the director and cast?
christin smith thank you... that concept took some getting used to! I almost chickened out of it because I was worried about safety but my amazing director made me a convert. She's amazing and it was quite a thrill to strap the mechanism on each night
Katherine quinonez You are certainly not alone. I was never a fan of the Beadle myself. Theatrically or from the Tim Burton movie. I find him more unsettling than Judge Turpin. Not to mention that I just find Timothy Spall just creepy in any role.
I played Beadle... he's very different in the musical. In the theatrical version, he's more like a dramatic showoff, rather than a creepy minion. Or at least that's the way I interpreted it :)
I loved Lovett's preformance but I feel like it was dragged down by the comedic nature of Sweeney. He seemed more like a cartoon Beetlejuice than Sweeney Todd; the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. This is a beautiful musical filled with incredible dialouge and story yet by completely flipping Sweeney it threw that out of the window. Yes, it does have hints of comedy, but when you make everything comedic it makes those moments less memorable. Plus when Lovett is trying to do a normal character and Sweeney is overreacting it upstages her and her marvelous preformance completely. Edit: as I read through more comments I don't think making Sweeney made him scarier. It made it harder to take him seriously. A character choice, yes. But a good one, no.
Looking back I do stand by my choices, however I see what you’re driving at and as an actor I definitely see your POV of upstaging. Thank you for the critique. It’s something I will implement when I play him again. This time, much more menacing and more true to the copyright.
Okay I guess I'm going to be the first one to say it, why does Toby need to kill Sweeney. For God's sake the man such narcissist he could have done it himself. As a matter of fact it makes more sense to have him kill himself, the man's lost everything. Why does Toby need to kill him, by having him kill Sweeney he's no better than mr. Todd himself
I think it completes Tobias' character arc. Meaning, Tobias is a simple dimwitted boy who, through external maternal and paternal forcers, simply cracks. It is the complete loss of innocence, I believe, we see through Tobias when you are blinded by revenge. As for Todd, he also is completely broken. His pursuit of revenge built him, but ultimately caused him to operate in a blind rage, when he destroys Lucy, he destroys himself and can not fathom what he had truly done. He can no longer operate/function in the world. Therefore these two arcs, Todd and Toby, complete and destroy one another. Just my thought.
I see you point, however just once I'd like to see it ended where he kills himself. It would make perfect sense to have him commit suicide because as you said he destroyed Lucy, mentally he's already dead so why not go threw with it!!
I personally think a better ending to the show would have been Toby crying while he killed Todd, then gently whispering "not while I'm around." This would show that he had the same devotion to Lovett that she had to Sweeny and that Sweeny had to Lucy and Johanna, furthermore proving the morale of the musical.
Gabi Dulcich Thank you! We really wanted to find the humor in the dark story. I for one love all the one liners Sweeney gets to say.
It defo helps make him feel more frighteningly human
I love that they cast an actual child to play Toby. It certainly makes him more convincing.
The audience participation in this show is amazing. From Sweeney walking through the audience to Mrs. Lovett singing about an audience member during A Little Priest, I would be honoured to be in that audience
i LOVE THE MRS. LOVETT ALREADY AND ITS ONLY 15 MINS IN
Olivia Montes
She's so sweet. As well as the young lady who plays Johanna.

Great job all of them!
I can't be the only person that thinks that judge turpin looks kind of like Doug walker AKA the Nostalgia Critic😊...
was tobi a girl? never the less they were amazing
funniest version
What's the name of the actor who plays Anthony?
Hi Bryon! I want to start off by saying what a wonderful job you did! I would like to ask you what theater this was performed in and also where I could get information on the director and cast?
Aloisia Galloway
Just a small theater in Northern Massachusetts and we had a cast of about thirty. :) Thank you for the support.
Sweeney is the one form Steam punk Sweeney isn't he!?
christin smith yup I'm the same guy . Did the steampunk after the traditional
You are absolutely amazing I loved how in the steampunk one your razors looked like Freddy Kruger's glove that was a brilliant idea!
christin smith thank you... that concept took some getting used to! I almost chickened out of it because I was worried about safety but my amazing director made me a convert. She's amazing and it was quite a thrill to strap the mechanism on each night
sweeney todd got some sense of fashion
was a little iffy on the actors but once my friends came on i was hooked
now i want to be a part in this musical 😓
I hate the beadle even more how dare you kill a harmless little bird
Katherine quinonez
You are certainly not alone.
Sweeney is as big as Leatherface.
It would make perfect sense to have him commit suicide because as you said he destroyed Lucy, mentally he's already dead so why not go threw with it!!
brian dirr Toby kills him because he killed Mrs Lovett, the only person to show him love.
I personally think a better ending to the show would have been Toby crying while he killed Todd, then gently whispering "not while I'm around." This would show that he had the same devotion to Lovett that she had to Sweeny and that Sweeny had to Lucy and Johanna, furthermore proving the morale of the musical.
Is this a High School Theatre?

Doing this for a college project, ignore this comment
Kawaii razors
I'm sorry but the guy that played Joanna's father sang really badly I couldn't stand it!
Emily Tolman
Agreed. His version of Johanna lacked empathy in my opinion.
This Sweeney is kind of portly
Arnav Dinesh Kamath too much pie, that’s my problem. I saw my size in this and I’m down 30 pounds in the 3 years since. :)
George Hearn was heavyset too.
He was really fun to watch too
We did Sweeney Todd october of 2017, and it was almost a different show.
This is the worst production I’ve ever seen in my life. Yuck!
Finally someone who agrees with me
