The Best Guitar For Kids Ages 10 & Under

  • What guitar should I get for my kid? Here's my recommendation:
    Yamaha GL1 Guitalele: amzn.to/2wO9h4L
    Kids can learn to play guitar, but we need to make it as simple for them as possible, and that starts with the right guitar.
    In the past, I've always had to teach on either the normal guitar or the ukulele, until I discovered a hybrid.
    The Guilele or Guitalele is the best of both worlds, and it's reasonably priced, right at $100. It is the size of a ukulele, which is great for small kids, but plays like a guitar, so they can transition to a larger guitar when they grow up and take all of their knowledge with them.
    My two oldest kids started learning on a Guilele at ages 6 and 8, and it has worked great for them. I feel confident that they will be able to upgrade to a normal guitar as they grow, and keep learning where they left off.

    This video was very helpful having a 11-year-old who has tried the full form acoustic guitar but found it challenging and soon given up.

    I completely disagree start with electrics. They make small micro versions and they are so much fun and versatile. Smaller necks and clearly look so much cooler! Acoustics can in later when the kids respect it more and or can handle the strings.
    Electric guitars can modified for when they get older for better sounds. And it still cost less to have someone modify them for you

    You can actually tune a Guitalele on E tuning using special strings. I use an Aquila Guilele 153C (Red Series) set to play my guitalele on standard E tuning, but you can even tune it on high E with an Aquila Guilele 145C set if you want your guitalele to sound like an ukulele, but play like a standard guitar: ua-cam.com/video/dX81iAjEUpw/v-deo.html

    How about ukulele with low G 4th string? (Any ukulele can have a special same-width low G installed.) It has the same tuning as the guitalele with the benefit of not having the awkward wide neck - not sure how that's comfortable for kids. In terms of different chord shapes, it may actually be more beneficial to understand how notes relate on the neck beyond simply shapes after spending much time on one instrument and then be motivated enough to pick up another related instrument.
    Also notable is Yamaha APXT2 (APX Thinline) 3/4 small acoustic guitar. Using nylon strings is not a bad idea for softer playing, which is possible to put on a regular guitar.

    An electric with an ergonomic body (strat like, but better no tremolo bridge) + a capo is another way to go.

    Looking to teach my 5 year old and looking for options. This is a great idea. Why not just tune it eadgbe?

  • @BenRose3d
    @BenRose3d 5 років тому +2

    Thanks for the video. Would it be any problem if the guilele were tuned EADGBe? It then be the same finger placement for the chords related to the nut right? I feel like I must be missing something.

    • @SimplifiedGuitar
      @SimplifiedGuitar  5 років тому +1

      Hey Ben, it would be pretty near impossible to tune the guilele to a standard guitar tuning of EADGBe. If you tried to go up, it would be very tight on the strings and neck. If you go down, it would be too loose and wouldn't stay in tune. What I do, is just put my capo on my guitar on the 5th fret and play with the guilele. Then you're in the same key.
      The reason the guilele is tuned ADGCEA is because of it's small size. But again, you still have the same chord shapes, just on a different fret.

    • @BenRose3d
      @BenRose3d 5 років тому

      @@SimplifiedGuitar Thanks for the response! Sounds like there could be opportunity for string manufacturers to make special strings for these instruments. I'm just worried as a newb, I'd get all mixed up with the same chord shapes having different chord sounds. Or have I misunderstood that too? Otherwise, it would be neat to get one of these for my son to learn on and we could get a nice little travel guitar out of it as well.

    Your comments on the transfer of chords etc. from guitar to Ukulele are not exactly correct. As you mention later in your video a guitar capoed to fret 5 has the same chord shapes on strings 1 2 3 & 4. as the Ukulele.

  • @8170youngwilliam

    Learn on something that makes you want to pick up. Not all kids want to learn on an acoustic. Stay away from department store guitars, go to a proper guitar store, you can get a cheap guitar the stores technician will have set up. Nothing worse than learning on a cheap guitar and the intonation is out, or the action is too high or too low. Grandparents, don't buy your grandchildren guitars unless you are a guitar player yourself.

    i disagree. i get paid £10 per lesson 10 lessons. and i give a 3/4 Paragon open body semi acoustic active pick up and a 15 w squire amp at the end, i would say the paragon semi is perfect for kids learning £70 i gig one myself. i dont do adverts

    Thanks for the video. Please do you think it is too early for a 1.3yr old to learn how to play guitar? She's very smart 4her age and has started playing the harmonica. She fiddles with her dad's guitar but I'm thinking of buying her one. Any advice pls?

      must be the lost note, "h". when my parents purchased my 1st guitar in 1962, they had no clue to what they were doing. it was well used and they balked at the price of, $10. the action was at about 1" at the 12th fret. the guy down the street said it was not tunable or playable. that provided the folks the ammunition to refuse everything i ever wanted in the future. if children want to learn, give them enough respect and buy them a mini-strat by fender and a decent practice amp. electric guitars are easier to learn on and they aren't fighting the strings. if they become disenchanted with playing most of your investment can be recouped.
