Allotment Dairy : 100 Day Potato Harvest from a small container pot

  • Harvesting another small 12 litre pot of new potatoes, this time after 100 days in the polytunnel.
A much better result this time with 2 seed potatoes planted in the small pot rather than just one.
With just 10 litres or so of compost used it's quite an economical way of growing potatoes in containers, and you could probably get a bigger yield with 3 seed potatoes even in such a small pot.
    Happy Gardening.

Your channel proves you can grow potatoes in small container and have good results , American growing channel are focusing on fad 10 gallon grow bags , which is not practical for everyone , I say this style of gardening is the way forward for urban dwellers with limited space .... Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge

First year growing potatoes for me and I put two Red Pontiac seed potatoes in a 20 litre pot. Today I emptied the pot to see if I had any early potatoes, I planted them on April 30th so about 70 days growing and I got 1lb 10oz. I am quite pleased with my first attempt - thank you for your wonderful tips. btw - I am in Canada.

Great little pot of potatoes, I emptied a small pot today just wanting some spuds for dinner. It had been almost 90 days, but the tops had been eaten by some muncher bug so I got 11 little spuds and some still on the root ball. Now I know why I decided to grow my own potatoes, they were delicious. Thanks for showing us you haul on your little bucket. Kim

Love the idea of growing in a smaller pot to bring them on a bit earlier. Top tip on replanting the potatoes - we tried to dig up an outside plant a couple of days ago - two tiny potatoes the size of grapes - so we put the plant back and it's picked up quite nicely!

Perfect spuds from a small pot... I've not bothered growing spuds in pots this year, I was over run with them last year, but seeing this vid makes me wish I'd done a few small ones now. Aah well, there's always next year. Cheers Adam

100 Days for me today Dan, One seed potato per bag. Just pulled my 1st bag, got 2kg (4.5lbs)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one spud was like a jacket size and 1lbs himself!!
Jesus these rockets really have lived up to there name!!!! would have pulled them at 90 days if i knew the size.
Same compost as i used last year just stuck some BFB and chicken pellets in (when i say some i really mean a ton by your standard :P)
just had to share my excitement with someone! the pots boiling, cant wait to try them :D

Nice crop for this time of year.
My spuds have taken off over the last 3 weeks.
They have been in the ground 5-6 weeks but the tops are massive since we have had rain.

I think exact numbers of days to grow depends on date of sowing and how warm the spring is. Last year we had a sunny mostly mild April and my 85 day harvest was 2lb and 100 days 2.5lb, both from one seed potato. That was from a late February sowing. This year I have sown 5 pots 15th Feb and 5 pots 23rd March. February sowings broke through in 19 days, the March sowing in about 10 days, so already 9 days quicker with the later sowing.....

baconsoda seems that an early start gets mostly overtaken by growth spurt when the heat comes on. Add your own nitrogen 10% to water and that seems to kick things up some too. baconsoda I've done the same, and I was wondering if you have warm weather a little bit later in the season for the past few years? We have, and now I plant everything about a month, or more, later than I used to, and it seems to work. Of course, I never know when we may have an early cold spell in the fall, but with the cold being later and later in spring, I plant my heat loving plants later than I used to, and it does very well. Right now we are getting a cool spell, and it's been in the 80F-90F here. Weather has changed a lot in the past 5 years, so I changed the way I plant like many others here in the U.S. Curious to know if your area is doing the same.

What do you do with the soil from your pots once you've harvested?

dentednj I dig it into my garden soil to improve the structure as I have a clay soil. You could store it over Winter and add some fertilizer and use it again next year though.Cheers, Dan.

I have clay and rock here so I try to add anything I can to loosen it. Composting and my hen house bedding of wood shavings and chicken manure are the majority of the amendments I have avail. Still... better working form clay than sand in my opinion.

when you say 4 in a 30 litre pot, all on the same level or 2 on 2 different levels ?

Richard Griffin Either / Or really. If you want to "Grub" a few small ones out and then leave the pot to harvest in one go then maybe plant in 2 levels, but I don't really think it matters.Cheers, Dan.

I am envious I did my 90 day pot and only got 11 ounces. Not even a pound. Did video it but a bit embarrassing.
    Cheers

Peter Edwards Nah, still use them for the maincrop spuds, just seems a bit easier and cheaper to grow a few earlies in these smaller pots.
First time I've done it and I'm quite surprised.Cheers, Dan.
