I can say from experience, mixing Funwhole and Lego works fine. The drawback is twofold: Lego doesn't come with any light kits, so you'd need to shell out extra for that (and Lego is already twice as expensive as the best competing brands like Funwhole and Pantasy), and the newest Funwhole sets are somewhat more detailed than Lego modulars, so the Lego modulars can look a bit underdeveloped or bland next to them.
Hya. You’re right that the lack of lights with LEGO could be an issue. One potential solution: there’s been a power cut in that side of town 😉 As for underdeveloped LEGO Modulars, I would disagree: some of the recent ones, like the Boutique Hotel are intricately detailed. And even the older ones like the Diner and the Parisian Restaurants are beautiful works, worthy of standing next to a FunWhole 🙂
@MutantProductions The Parisian Restaurant is one the most beautiful Lego sets ever. But I do think Funwhole largely has a slight edge on exterior detail. (And Pantasy blows Lego away on interior detail.)
One thing I really like of FunWhole’s Modulars, are the walls you can open to see inside without having to remove the floors. They have a lot of originality and are improving so fast.
So far I've built 14 FunWhole sets, 3 more are on their way. And it's not even Black Friday yet. My impression: FunWhole uses GoBricks material and GoBricks improved their quality (even tiles) more and more. In most of their newer sets you won't find any stickers, just prints (and good ones). Comparing what you get and what you pay, makes buying LEGO sets kind of masochistic. And: Did you know that FunWhole is the same company that produces lighting kits for LEGO sets under the names Briksmax and Lightailing?
Hya. This is all news to me. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. The quality of the bricks is almost as good as LEGO (I can see the difference on large models). It’s not yet perfect, but it’s truly excellent. They also use totally unique parts… or are these commissioned to GoBricks as well? And what about their minifigs? The print quality is also truly excellent. LEGO should certainly look in the rear view mirror. Considering how quickly FunWhole are improving, they should certainly be concerned.
@@MutantProductions GoBricks only produces parts in large quantities. So the parts for cable routing, the lighting parts, and the printed parts should be FunWhole stuff. The figs... well, sadly they will never reach LEGO figs. But some look kinda cute. And AFOBs don't really play much. do they.
The FW figs have got their charm, but there’s one major problem: it seems the sets are designed with LEGO figs in mind, not FW figs. I like their rounded shape. I loathe having to build them. FW should package them with their arms and hands inserted at least. Very tricky and too easy to damage. As for not playing with them, to be fair, these models are tricky to build and I think more aimed at adults than kids. Or at least older kids 🙂
I have no issue with mixing other brands with the leading bricks. I used to. But, since the quality of the alternative companies has improved greatly, I no longer think it’s an issue. Let’s face it. In the real world we often buy cheaper versions of the same product that turn out much better than the well known market leader. Take Baked Beans for instance. Who would’ve thought ASDA own brand baked beans could take on and out do Heinz?
Great video. The Builds can mix very good in my opinion. But mixing the Bricks. That is for now a step to far. But the sidewalks of the modulars are different between Lego and F.O. that is gonna be ab issue in the Future
It’s not an issue at all, in the future or now: I delivered the solution. As for mixing and matching, what can you do? FunWhole don’t (yet) sell individual parts. So we work with what we have 😀
they look like great sets to build . as a model an diorama builder sets like that from lego an small snap tight kits are a great way to get into building dioramas an just models of many different sorts . the catch is the price if you can keep the prices low or at least reasonable it will draw more people to it faster . as far as mixing lego an funholes together in a build its great . model builders do it often by using kits of figures an oh lets say air plains an armor together along with equipment to build a great looking diorama . great video i look forward to your next one
Hey Christopher! :) Mixing stuff together should be the most natural thing in the world... except LEGO have a special hold on people, and the very idea of doing this is viewed - by a not so small minority - as sacrilege. Just trying to get those of open their minds :D
Great vid, Cap. Yeah, they look good but I'll stick to LEGO. I rather rebuild them and yes give the extra dollar. But LEGO has to step up their game in the modular range and printed parts. Other brick making companies may come close to quality but for me there's still a long way to go. Btw nice border on your MILS plates
You know, I was a LEGO purist until very recently. The Fun in the Whole company caught my eye though and I tried them out with their Newsstand… the quality of the bricks is 95% there. The instructions are on par, and everything is printed (now - didn’t used to be). I think if this company grows, they’ll cause serious completion to LEGO which can only be a good thing. I’m looking forward to the other sets I have from them 😀
Recent sets from Pantasy, Funwhole, and Cobi match or even exceed Lego in overall quality: bricks, designs, manuals, presentation... Never mind that Funwhole sets are half the price of Lego and include a light kit in every set. I'd advise anyone who's into building with bricks (versus just being a fan of the Lego company itself) to give them a try.
I have to admit that due to space limitations I never managed to build my own Lego City layout, but using MILS makes total sense for anyone who is installing light kits. You don’t want to have to change batteries for each building, and MILS are a great way to run wires through them for powering them from an outlet. And regarding the name: Jang mentioned in one of his reviews that the company is planning to rebrand because of their unfortunate choice in naming. So keep the jokes coming while you can!
Yep, I've got confirmation from the Whole company that's a lot of Fun, that they are in early discussions on how to improve their name. I am prepared to suggest that they keep "Whole", and change the other part to something that symbolises light, like the majestic feeling you have when the sun rises. How about replacing "Fun", with "Glory" ?
Oh and btw, I have massive space limitations myself…. My built models are stored in stackable boxes… and I’m running out of space for those as well!!!!
Are the instructions for their sets available online? Personally I'd just order all the individual matching Lego pieces off Bricklink or PAB and build a Lego version of this without the light elements on MILS and add it to my city because it really is pretty. I just refuse to use non Lego pieces.
Yep they have online instructions. But they also have some truly unique parts (and impressive prints). IIRC there aren’t too many unique parts in this one so you can always try, but I think it might end up being more expensive for you to Bricklink it than get the set itself 🙂 FunWhole have got these amazing plates that reverse the direction of the build which I sure wish LEGO would incorporate into their repertoire. Imagine the MOCs we could build with those ! 😀 Here’s our review of that Antique Store - if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/Wq9NLATkmAo/v-deo.html
I don't think it's JUST that Funwhole and some similar companies have INCREASED their accuracy and QC, but Legonin recent years has experienced a slight yet noticable decline in QC. I think the only merit to being a purist at this point is the principle of limiting yourself to what's available with the system... Even then, the limited color offerings of certain parts within that system doesn't actually sound like a compelling limitation, it just sounds like an annoying obstacle. But if you care more about presentation than the challenge of limitation, I haven't seen a single original piece from Funwhole that wouldn't be a welcome or necessary addition to Legos own system. I say mix and match.
Hey and thanks for your comment. You're right: there's a definite feeling that LEGO are resting on their laurels. The fact so many competitors forgo sticker, yet LEGO stubbornly refuse to do so is proof of that in my book. My favourite specialised pieces are those that allow you to reverse the orientation of the build. Bloody amazing and oh so useful. What a shame LEGO don't (or won't) have those.

@MutantProductions It's a good idea in general but particularly because the wiring requires more delicate handling of the structure overall.
The wiring is an absolute pain. And so is connecting the tiny connectors to the junction boxes. But the result is worth it 🙂

@@RobinHullBuilds so FunWhole is Heinz’s ASDA?
You're right. As a lot of people are discovering, some of the competing brand products are actually better than Lego, and usually far cheaper.
Just build it onto the MLS. I am doing that with my city
Ha! Well spotted 🙂
Yes this happened in a previous adventure…
