I look at life in a simple way. You have to have a bad day to appreciate a good one. Be sad, to appreciate happy, hungry to appreciate food. Be thankfull for what you have. As bad as it is, it could all ways be so much worse.
The lights looked great at night . Good job ! Thanks for the shout-out, feel like I'm famous 😋 Glad the coal timing was perfect. That was one of those unexplained last minute decisions . Took the bags off the van so it was empty to come up and I'd been that impressed with it in my stove I thought I'd see what you thought of it too and left one in . Log store looks great , functional and thats what counts , the fact it was built for nothing is just the icing on the cake. Cant wait to see the cladding go on . Cheers 😄 .
Well done family your boy will forget the play station etc but he will always remember his dad showing him how to use chainsaw life lessons will carry him pure simple magic
Thank you. Euan is in his element outside doing jobs, and we want to encourage this. Better life skills than sitting on an x box all day .. trust me, he'd do that too if we let him 😉🤣
I know how you feel when there is no water. We live on land in NZ and when there is a power cut, trees in our area fall down on the lines in a storm, our electric water pump can not work. To flush the toilets I use water from the troughs in the paddock to fill the cistern. Also as soon as there is a storm on the way we fill up water bottles and put buckets out on the deck under the roof for overflow. We also have a camp gas cooker and kettle so we can cook and have tea. We also invested in a generator recently which we can use if the water is out for days. It's all good fun!
Hi, yes, it's all about being prepared, and once again, we weren't 🤣. Lots of lessons learned all the time, but you know what, like you said, it's all fun, and we love it here. Makes us stronger & more resourceful. Too long we have had it easy with everything on tap, literally. I love the simple life! Sounds like you are too. X
Nice job on the deck, the framing and the log store. Everything is moving along nicely, I suppose we will be back to the rain soon enough. love the decorations, the lights are fab.
What did people do before palettes? Lol! They are certainly useful things aren't they? I've seen builds made out of palettes that are really clever. What's the saying? "Needs must where the devil drives?" or "Necessity is the mother of invention." We have a mountain to the west of us, so the sun disappears at about 3:30 in the afternoon! Once the sun disappears, the temps drop like a rock! Once the sun goes down, I become a hermit indoors. (or a bear) Hibernation becomes very appealing. Good luck with the work!
Hi, yes, that temperature drop is intense. Pallets are brilliant! Wish we had more! Always amazing things to be made. I'm going to do a Google search now! Give Sam some more tasks! 🤣
Love watching how you make something from nothing, you along with a few other UA-camrs are motivating me to fix things that time and weather had cause to no longer function as they should.
You lovely folk are doing amazing stuff....it's so satisfying isn't it, creating something that you need out of resources that are already lurking around. And such a good idea putting the log store next to water tank so you can harvest rainwater off the roof. (Rainwater harvesting from roof is very common here in NZ.) Go well all of you. Xx
The place looks great. Your son did a great job with the chainsaw. We built and renovated homes for all of my sons childhood. He learned how to use power tools safely from his father as well. It is a good learning experience. I am looking forward to seeing the siding go on.
Thank you for recognising that. ♥️ I'm fully expecting to get grief about Euan using power tools especially a chainsaw but like you said its the best way for them to learn and I'd rather yhe be doing that than sat in his bedroom 'safely' sat on the internet.
Great job guys, slowly but surely, remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. The wood store is cracking, you really are doing great sam and with your little helper .(get him some gloves using that saw) I was having kittens watching 😂 and the lights look fab and festive . Can’t wait to see the caravan all clad.living the dream guys 👍🏻 I’m jealous
Thanks Adele. Yes I know what you mean, I was having kittens too but Sam was in full control and it's great for Euan to help out. He will 100% be wearing his gloves next time. 🫣
Anything that could possibly go wrong did - on Saturday. It's off the forestry land and just about on the land - stuck halfway through the entrance. Next Saturday we hope to get it to its eventual resting place - fingers crossed.@@theirishhomestead

Been binge watching these vids for the last few days, great place you've got tbh. That neighbour is close but still far enough away to live both your own lives. Interesting seeing those 2 and that other cottage with the red roof down the hill all within a little radius, wonder why that is? Being Irish myself, I see the friendliness towards others like yourselves but tbh I think a lot of the help is so they can stick their nose in and see what you are doing 😂😂 everyone loves to know what everyone is doing here but won't admit it, can be a blessing and a curse 😂😂😂. Pity that tree got the shed but at least it wasn't a stoned one, new roof on that is another project one day. 😊
Hi! Thanks for the message. Yes, neighbours are close, but once in ours, you don't see them, and that hedge they put in to block us youtubers out 😉 will soon grow! They are lovely all jokes aside, and sometimes it's a blessing having someone nearby. Many Irish people have said the same, that everyone is friendly, but they are mostly just nosey! That's ok by me.....well for now anyways! 🤣.
You have done a great job on the roof for your log storage. I love your home made stand for cutting your logs. Very clever.good job teaching your young boy to cut up your logs. He will remember that. You guys are playing a blinder. Use everything you have. Recycle and reuse. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Deirdre. Euan & Sam are having the best time together and it's so lovely to see. When we were in the UK we hardly saw Sam. He was working his magic on other people's homes! The best thing we ever did buying this place. X

WOW. Your enginuity is amazing! Such a hard worker! I love your videos and never miss them. Thank you for providing a warm and safe place for your cats. Cats are so much more than barn cats - they love you and are part of your family. Watching from Oregon.❤
Excellent job! It’s very functional and has terrific character. Very useful resource’s renewal. The optimism you all share is so refreshing. Don’t apologize as much - a family that makes the choices you’ve done is to be admired ! Good on ya ! Great family, keep smiling and just one step at a time. 🥰🥰🇨🇦😉
Great job creating the wood storage with rain catchment roof! I just put up my Christmas decorations too. Makes it feel festive and cozy and brings a sort of normalcy to the chaos. Is it possible to install some of that tin as skirting around the bottom of the static? Even if it's rusted it will temporarily help to block the winter wind from making it cold under your floor. It doesn't look as though the cladding was meant to be installed in that area. So happy to see your love and concern for your lovely pets!🐕🐈⬛🐈🐈🐾
Hi! Thanks for your lovely comments. Christmas is big in our house. It is great for the kids as it makes it more homely. We are going to bring the cladding right down to the floor.
They have been a great help, but they are dangerous to leave down as we realised when they flew off in the high winds. Time for a safer option I think. Although I don't particularly like the chippings right now they will hopefully blend in with time.
Hello there it's class to see a father teach his son the foundation hardwork sirvival skills recycling learning all this in your on back yard cabin looking bespoke rustic utilitarian great to see you on the tools a we log bin in your weelie porch 👌 keep the videos coming all good glad you picked Ireland the back garden of Europe to settle down and restore your forever home 🇮🇪🎄💡🔥🏡🪓🧰🥳🛠️🔧⚒️⛏️⚙️🔩🧰🏡🔥
Thanks, we are so glad we came here too. The welcome we have had is amazing. The folk here in Ireland are so kind and helpful. We are really happy here. 😊 Glad you're enjoying the videos.
Great work! Lovely to see how well you are doing. You are very creative and resourceful. It's always very gratifying creating 'something out of nothing' {if you know what I mean}. The log store is great and the Christmas decorations look fab Looking forward to the cladding in the next video. Have a good week!
It's going to look beautiful in the lovely timber. The savings from repurposing means you can splurge on the things you want that will make a difference. Well done!
It's probably still frozen over but leave a small drip in the taps (shower + kitchen sink). The pipe will not freeze when the water is flowing (think of a river). You don't need a lot so the farmer wouldn't mind. The pipe for the troughs are less likely to burst also and he won't need to free them out for animals if required. You can get cheap thermometers in the likes of Lidl or Aldi which can monitor inside and outside temps. You'll be able to tell when to turn on a drip before you go to bed if the temp is down near 0 degrees outside. Plus it will help manage the temp settings from the stove. When to Open/close the draft controllers etc. and what effect it has on the inside temps. If you have a fire lighting its hard to tell what it is like outside. Thermometer will help manage the suitation. I had a quick look for this response. Apologies if already mentioned.
Thank you for taking the time to give us such great advice. We are hoping the cold snap I'd over for while now but yes leaving the taps on a little is great advice. We do need to buy thermometers so thanks for that as we hadn't even got that on our radar. We are learning about being more aware of the weather forecast and being better prepared. 😀
You kids have inspired me to clear out unused items that I’ve promised myself for 5 years that I would be using them!! Hate to do it, but handwriting on the wall each passing year. 🥹😵💫😝
Well done Sam you have achieved such a lot.Decking done woodshed done cat flap fitted Your woodshed will take hard work to fill it up..Becky must be very happy to have the decking fitted as it will keep the mud outdoors. The garland looks really nice lit up I am sure the kids are pleased with that.Looking forward to see the dog using the cat flap. Take care .God bless xx
Thanks Colette. The decking us amazing, as is the log store. I'm so proud of Sam. I wouldn't hold your breath regards the dog using the cat flap. He is so far not a fan! 😉🤣
WOW what a fabulous family and well done on the progress with getting ready for the cladding. Even though you’ve had it tough going at times you all are really living such a dream. Honestly we are all watching and living vicariously through you.... a more humble, hardworking, simple way of life until time for the homestead cottage to be renovated. Your ingenuity and ability to recycle wood and tin is incredible and the wood cutting stand is a beautiful piece of art. Keep ploughing on as it’s gonna be very very cold but time stops for no man and it’ll be spring and summer before you know. Great vlog and gotta say the Christmas trim on your home is delightful 😁😁✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅
Aww, thanks for that lovely message, Monica. It's definitely a learning curve, but I'm enjoying how resourceful this way of life makes us. It's much more satisfying when you make something for free that would have cost €€€ to buy new. Sam is the happiest I've ever seen him. 💗
The decking looks good nice job you will be snug once your caravan is cladded you always make a good job with all your odd pieces im the same make do with what you have got your making great progress .
I can’t help but keep thinking the tin on the barn on the left as we are looking at it, looks like a Christmas tree on that upright pole. 🎄. All it needs is the top reattached and some lights. 😂
Great update. You've achieved a lot this week. It's looking really homie and festive too. Will you be putting some kind of grid or netting over the water tank though? I'd hate the kittens to fall in now that the wood shed roof is up. Sorry Sam....another job!! Keep smiling and keep warm.
Ahb yes Carole dont worry we will make it safe for the animals/people. At the moment, it leaks past 2 inches 🙄, but once we sort that, we will make it safe. Thanks so much for your support. ❤️
be cold till april. ya better get coal too go with the sticks. check that water your using from the farmers pipe is potable as it could be only fit for livestock. depending on well or group scheme. you will get a few spells off severe frost up here over the winter up till april.
Thanks, yeah, we have a good place to get coal from. Need to stock up! The water is from the mains, we checked that. Same mains we will be tapping into eventually when the motorhome sells and we have the €2300 the water people want to do it. We filter all the water anyway in a berkefeld.
That wood store looks amazing....very sturdy too...im sure the corregated panels on frame work outside van would look better with coat of white paint and maybe the kids could paint a murial...hope your winter isnt too cold... It's definitely a winter you will never forget ! Looking forward to next vid
Hi, that's a great idea. The kids would love that. In this weeks video, sadly, more tin is added. Ugly but practical and, of course, free! I'm going to get some tins of spray paint 🎨 it needs to look more in keeping! Maybe green would work well. 🤔 Thanks for the suggestion.
Ha ha! Yes, the house will hopefully start in the New Year but very much depending on when the motorhome sells and the council gives us the green light. I am fully expecting to have another autumn and winter in the mobile, so I need to get it right now while I have the time. 👍
@@theirishhomestead It's an amazing setting for a house. So even the static being done will be just great to be surrounded by that. My Mrs lived in Bredbury so i recognised the places when you were back home!
I wonder how many friends and victims your cats are going to bring home now. Seems to me you should list that lovely insulated cat house for sale. Your wood store built from odds and ends and recycled stuff looks great. You do such a good job making use of what’s available.
Love the organic process in the different building projects!👍 we come to learn working on acreage you need to have a small 4 way front loader (different attachments) bit of an investment, but wish you guys the best!
Great job folks, love the recycling, and blissful orange glow from the sun. I really do love winter sun in ireland, makes up for the cold and rain! we dont have running water to our caravan, so we still have 5l bottles brought in so thankfully we are ok. We do have 2 wells going to the house tho. Just got the well grant in the summer and repaid this week... you can look into that. but truth be known, id not do the grant, we ended up spending more than doing something directly id say.
Not sure if someone has already said it but if you know the water might freeze, leaving a tap trickle a little will keep the water moving and stop it freezing. ❤
Great recycling engineering !! You think on your feet and that a very positive quality. Best regards from Switzerland in 70cm of new fresh snow and minus 5C outside, that’s cold.
Ooh my goodness yes with the water! Our pipes were frozen too…luckily we had lots of bottled water for drinking…toilet and showering was a different matter! Haha Love the wood store, looks really good. It’s quite satisfying reusing the stuff that you have around and it’s also keeping the history within the house and grounds isn’t it? Add to that it’s far cheaper and you have a winner! I don’t know if you’ve found and it’s become our motto lol, but EVERYTHING takes sooo much longer than you think it will, the hours just disappear! We thought about putting the wood chips down for the walkways, but wasn’t sure if it would just sink into the mud…so we will keep an eye on yours and maybe until we scrape back we can chuck some of that down too. Look forward to the cladding going on! 😊
Thanks, guys. Yep, it's been a challenge, but we are just so grateful that we are warm. I'm not fussed about the showering bit, but yes, the toilet was a bit of a pain! 🫣 Luckily, our neighbours have mains water and helped us out. Yes, somehow things always take all day... May have something to do with not actually picking up a tool til nearly lunchtime, though 😉x
@@theirishhomestead 🫣 Yes that happens to us with the tools somehow not available until around lunch time! That and all the procrastination that we’re getting quite experts at! I’m sure come the spring and summer that will be the boost needed! 😉
💥👌👏👏👏 Well done on the shed. Repurposing = Creativity. And thank you for adjusting your content format. Showing how the shed's been built or the cat flap has been installed made me as a viewer feel so much more involved and excited for what is to come.
Great porch and frame for the cladding. love the rough edges. Are you going to insulate between the cladding and the static? Wasn't there a lean-to there that you tore down? Fantastic woodshed and a smart place to build a new one. Do you need a pair of chainsaw pants? Beautiful garland, wish I could visit and bring you some Christmas baking! Great music btw!
Hi, oh I love Christmas baking. We always welcome visitors, especially those bringing food! 😉. Yep, Sam needs chainsaw pants for sure. We need a lot of things to be fair 🤣. Yes you're right there was a lean-too there but it was dangerous so it needed taking down. We copied the original idea though with this log store. Yes we plan on using insulation on the sides the sane as the roof. Let's pray for no gale force winds again whilst we do it! 🍀🤣
As with life you roll with the joy of something you accomplish even a little thing like a log store. the way you utilise the items you have around you is brilliant. keep going be safe and warm and crack on
I witnessed the result of a chainsaw accident. It was summer holidays. Young man wanted to help his dad by cutting firewood with chainsaw in the garage. No steel-toe boots, chainsaw trousers or jacket. Lost control of saw and, lucky for him, only cut his toes off. Ruined his holiday and delayed his return to uni. Life changing really. PPE is not terribly expensive. Don't take your safety foregranted in that adventure wonderland/ building site of yours. Use it or lose it. Best wishes.

Don’t apologize as much - a family that makes the choices you’ve done is to be admired ! Good on ya ! Great family, keep smiling and just one step at a time. 🥰🥰🇨🇦😉
Thanks so much! Do you know I didn't realise we apologised so much! I think it's subconsciously in preparation for the UA-cam onslaught! 😉
Errr, you got this.
Bless you guy's, you're doing great & both looking really well! ❤👏 👏
Thank you!! 😊 It helps when you love a place. Working on it never feels like a chore.
You all work so hard! Thanks for the video!
Thank you. We are doing our best. 👍
God Bless.happy future
Thank you.
keep up the great work - living the dream!! Thanks for taking us along
Thanks so much for watching & supporting us. ❤️
The movable walkways are brilliant!! 😅
They have been a great help, but they are dangerous to leave down as we realised when they flew off in the high winds. Time for a safer option I think. Although I don't particularly like the chippings right now they will hopefully blend in with time.
Your progress is amazing, super proud of you all ❤🇬🇧
Thank you so much!! ❤️

Thank you. Hope you're staying warm.& well. 🤗
Great work! Lovely to see how well you are doing. You are very creative and resourceful. It's always very gratifying creating 'something out of nothing' {if you know what I mean}. The log store is great and the Christmas decorations look fab Looking forward to the cladding in the next video. Have a good week!
Thank you. Yes, the cladding is the next big job. Sadly, I can't make this out of waste materials!
It's going to look beautiful in the lovely timber. The savings from repurposing means you can splurge on the things you want that will make a difference.
Well done!
@mariehiggins-dq2tx yes you're right what we save is needed for things we have to splurge on. 👍
Great work love the wood store
Thanks 👍
lovely family one day it will all be worth the graft you both put in.
Thank you, so kind of you to say. ☺️
Great video! The log house looks terrific!
Thank you! 👍
Give it time.xx😂
Hi guys
Another week of hard work.
Luv the cat flap and the Christmas decorations glad you kept them. See you on the next one 👋😘
Thank you. Yes I'm so glad we did. It's made all the difference for the kids. ❤️
Massive progress!
Enjoying your progress, great that you can recycle bits lying around into something useful 👍
Thank you. We are lucky there is so much scrap around & that we have a Sam who just gets on with it! 😉🤣
Good job 👍
The decking looks good nice job you will be snug once your caravan is cladded you always make a good job with all your odd pieces im the same make do with what you have got your making great progress .
Nothing better than making something useful out of rubbish is there?
Hello from Ecuador. Great work on the wood shed. We make things work here too.
Thank you. Much more job satisfaction, that's for sure. 👍
Nice
Love Sams enthusiasm...cracking on nicely now and the kids learning too ❤
They really are! Best thing for them being in the countryside. Really grateful. ♥️
I can’t help but keep thinking the tin on the barn on the left as we are looking at it, looks like a Christmas tree on that upright pole. 🎄. All it needs is the top reattached and some lights. 😂
I see it too! 🎄🤣
Look forward to videos. Only just found ur channel. Love watching ur journey. ❤❤❤❤❤
Aww thanks. Hope you enjoyed it. 👍
Keep forgetting it's not even the house. Great to see it inching along from nowt to what it will be. Keep up the grand work!
@stevenwoodman1032 ahh yes Bredbury was not too far from us! 👍
I wonder how many friends and victims your cats are going to bring home now. Seems to me you should list that lovely insulated cat house for sale. Your wood store built from odds and ends and recycled stuff looks great. You do such a good job making use of what’s available.
🫣 yes, it could be a disaster with cat 🎁 Felix is the only one so far who has mastered the flap, but only coming in, not going out! 🤣
Love the organic process in the different building projects!👍 we come to learn working on acreage you need to have a small 4 way front loader (different attachments) bit of an investment, but wish you guys the best!
Thank you. Yes, lots of lessons learned here. Thank you for the support. We are complete novices at this way of life, but loving it all the same. ❤️
nice job on the log store it looks well solid. here's hoping for a mild winter!
Fingers crossed, but the kids are praying for snow! Great sledging slope at the back of the house they have their eye on! 🤣
Interesting thanks. Yes the winter sun is spectacular. ♥️
Your Doing a great job! Both of you doing great work ❤🤗🙏
Thank you so much for the support. ♥️
My Germanshepherd loves watching your show, well done guys and love your channel ❤❤❤ xo
Thank you. Glad your dog is enjoying it. 😉
You guys are doing an amazing job. keep it up.
Thank you. ♥️
Great progress again. 👍❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Not sure if someone has already said it but if you know the water might freeze, leaving a tap trickle a little will keep the water moving and stop it freezing. ❤
Good tip! Thanks, I will try it tonight. 👍
Great recycling engineering !! You think on your feet and that a very positive quality. Best regards from Switzerland in 70cm of new fresh snow and minus 5C outside, that’s cold.
Ooh yeah, that's cold! Weirdly, we have had no snow yet. I think it's the fact we are close to the sea maybe?
You're an inspiration Sam with your creativity! And all the hard work to bring it to fruition.
Thank you. I try! 😉🤣❤️
looking forward to watching this!
Thanks, hope you enjoyed it.
Well done, great progress against the elements. You're winning, and it will get easier. Thanks for keeping us up to date with all your endeavours.
It is starting to feel like we are getting used to it all here, especially working in the different weather conditions. 🤣
Just love what you are doing. What a wonderful family experience. All of you building your future together.
Stay safe and warm 😊
Thank you so much. Such a great education for the kids, and hopefully, they will do something similar in years to come.🤞🍀
💥👌👏👏👏 Well done on the shed. Repurposing = Creativity. And thank you for adjusting your content format. Showing how the shed's been built or the cat flap has been installed made me as a viewer feel so much more involved and excited for what is to come.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. We are learning all the time with editing & filming. 👍
As with life you roll with the joy of something you accomplish even a little thing like a log store. the way you utilise the items you have around you is brilliant. keep going be safe and warm and crack on
Yes, definitely. I'm enjoying the satisfaction I'm getting, building from waste materials, and even better, it's finally my own home I'm working on. 💪
I will treat myself to some better ppe
@@theirishhomestead thanks, man. You'll never regret it.
