I love how this New Zealand Folk Song has been revived by Nathan Evans and half of Tik Tok in the past couple of weeks! Who would have guessed that singing Sea Shanties would be a world wide sensation in 2021? In a way it makes sense .. Covid has all of us feeling a little "lost at sea" and in need of some good old foot stomping camaraderie and connection! It's certainly lifted my spirits - and seeing the collaborations on Tik Tok has been magical and so inspiring! I hope you like my piano arrangement! I've included the lyrics so that you can sing along.

The thing I love about sea shanties is the fact that the beat is so easy to pick up. Doesn't mean it's easy to dance to, but still. Good beat.
yeah I agree, John - I love that it's music for EVERYBODY .. everyone can stomp a foot and sing along and it doesn't matter if you have a great voice or not ... or if you can dance ... I think that's why these shanties are enjoying a comeback - they connect us. Of course originally they were designed to help the workers on the ships stay in time with each other during rhythmically driven tasks.. like hauling heavy ropes etc.. and now we are united in the task of getting through this Covid 19 time and various lockdowns ... singing shanties lifts the spirits for sure.
They were work songs, used to time rhythmic work, so it makes them easy to pick up. Sort of the maritime equivalent of modern Jodies

@@alexanderzangal4125 I think the world of Games for me is a bit like the world of Classical Music for other people - I know it's awesome and I'm pretty sure I would LOVE it ... but it's kind of overwhelming and intimidating because there's just so much and I wouldn't know where to begin!

My family has a history of fishing in pugit sound, Alaska, the Caribbean and some of the most dangerous places my grandpa built a boat called the V.I.S. my aunt used to run a seafood restaurant called V.I.S. Seafoods using only the seafood my mom my aunt my grandpa and my aunt who’s running the business caught my dad sold the V.I.S. over a year a ago and I am still sad to this day so this song almost made me cry and it made me so emotional thank you so much for it.

I am not sure „The Wellerman“ qualifies as a genuine „work song“, which I believe shanties were originally. Someone even called it „shanty-adjacent“. But all music theory gibberish aside - it is still a gorgeous tune that anyone can pick up and there are SO many good renditions of it on UA-cam that I find enjoyable. It is simple, it is fun and that is good enough for me.

I agree with you completely - although it’s not a shanty in the purest definition of the term ... people are searching for shanties and singing along and it lifts their spirits and puts wind in their sails so I’m all for it too! I love playing these sea songs or shanties or shandy-adjacents haha so I’m going to enjoy arranging and uploading more and not worrying too much about those experts who get their shanty panties in a twist about mislabeling 😁😁😁
