Big Block Mopar Engine Build Costs: Stock vs. Stroked.

- The big block 406 is in the car and making passes and in the 1968 barracuda drag car. If you’re new to the channel, I did a complete build series on this engine, then had the engine dynoed. A major question from my viewers was, “how much did the engine build cost?”.
In this video, I explain the cost of the parts that I paid for them vs. what they are off the shelf, and what a 440 source stroker kit would do to the cost difference.
THERE ARE NO MACHINING COSTS in this video. Machining costs are different around the world. Machining for the 406 block in this video was completed by @edsmachine93 .

Hello John
Hey Joe, nice budget build. Was wondering , is that an GM alternator and does that go with your AC Delco creeper? You do great work. Two thumbs up.
Haha! You called it. That creeper was my grandpas. The alternator is a power master knock off that I got for $25!
One thing I've learned the hard way. You can add parts pieces up eight ways from Sunday, but its the machining that bites you in the ass every time. Oh they'll tell you boring a hole costs X amount, so you multiple by 8 and think that ain't so bad. Then when you pick it up you'll crap your pants when you see the total price.
Guy I used to use wasn't cheap but he was good, just double what he might've said going in and that was pretty close, itd be right no worries. He retired, guy I used on my 318 build was unbelievably higher priced! Still walking funny after that bill. Over a grand more than what I was expecting and he cut the decks crooked.
My advice is find a good machine shop before you plan a build. This guy was recommended by several people, so be careful who you listen to, they might be idiots. 🤣
Thanks for sharing! Machining is key to making the best product. I definitely think good communication is important.
@JustMoparJoe I'd love to have a machine shop around here like the one you use! Went through a 273 this winter just to make sure it was in decent shape, it was. Would've loved to had the decks and heads cut to bump the compression but after the 318 experience left it as is. It's a low buck gas mileage experiment not a performance thing anyway.
very cool !!
Thanks Tim!
We want to see results of the new converter!
You and me both! Going to give her the ultimate test soon!
Wow! Everything is so expensive nowadays. I'm starting to sound like my grandfather.
Haha! Gotta do what you can with what you got!
Thanks for the price list the street rod nationals is next week and I got a booth in the swap meet going shopping for 4 days trying to build a 400 or maybe a stroker for my valiant had a 470 years ago in a duster that was fun on the street with a 4 speed I will be one of the few setting up with mopar parts usually sell most of my parts if you are going to be there let me know would like to meet ya you might need or want something I got thanks
I’d love to check it out! We just got back from vacation, so I better stay in and work on some of these projects.
Turned into a big money for something that used to cost 2000 dollars done and I would drop it in and go from there. Long time ago now as I think 🤔 about it.
I agree. I remember going through simple builds with my dad when I was younger. Aluminum heads added $1450 of the budget that a good set of cast irons would have saved.
Hey Joe do you have a video on makin your elephant ear motor mounts??
I’m sorry, I don’t. I wish they were connected like a front plate. It’d be stronger
Also a good machinist is hard to find around here and that's as important as the parts
Absolutely true!
What a beautiful sound on that dyno❤❤❤
Thanks brother! I had 4 dyno videos total
Joe, any chance you know how much lift can be safely run on a Big Block with a zero dect no grooves flat top pistons? I'm looking at Crower HDP271 & HDP282 and they are both around .500 lift and just a little more with 1.5 rockers and I'm wondering if I can run 1.6 rockers? I don't know if there is enough room there without cutting the pistons.
Also, any chance you have an extra set of non-roller adjustable rockers?
I’m really not sure. I know I sold my set of crane rockers recently to Mike at MKS.
The more important thing to remember is how long that lift is staying open. You can have a larger lift with less duration. Also setting the cam timing events can allow for more lift.
@@JustMoparJoe in looking for adjustable rockers I see some are 1.6 , I think with the cam I want I'll be ok with a 1.5 but that is what I was trying to determine is if I can run 1.6 if that is the rockers I find. It is a street car no racing so I'm more interested in durability than horse power. I don't want to be on like Power Tour and a roller go bad in the middle of the day. Let me know if you're going to make it to MOParty, I'll buy you a cold one. Thanks Joe.
@@dbc105 awesome! Thank you! The 1.5’s will be better.
Thanks for the update, looks like if you want to do the searching and not in a big hurry you can build a really nice big block Mopar without having to give up any body parts or ((kidneys, etc) wish 440sorce would sell the crank, rods, pistons for the B block engines like they have for the stock stroke 440,i think that a brand new crank, rods, pistons, rings, and i think all of there cranks are steel, but I could be wrong, still a complete balanced bottom end kit and a performance one at that for under 3200.00 dollars,i think it comes with bearings also is a good price,if you don't have any stuff
That’s true. They do sell smaller drop in kits for the B blocks 383/400. Thanks for watching. The fun part is coming soon!
I'm glad you've posted this build! I have a 1978 D-150 that's my summer daily. I've mulled over swapping the engine into my 1972 New Yorker and making a stroker with the 400 that's in it! I drive the truck more than the car anyway! My only concern was obtaining collector plates as opposed to hobbyist plates. The truck had the 400 as an option, but I would only need hobbyists plates if I turned the truck into a Power Wagon or short bed, as in change the look, turned it into a clone or tribute!
Nice rides! We know the 400 can be built anyway you’d like. Good luck with your projects 👍🏼
It all adds up.
Faster than we think it does.
You really did and awesome job on the budget side of things.
Bonus with your engine, it actually works.
I seen alot of people spend even more and have at the very best mediocre performance.
Your build is an absolute good and positive base line of what a good engine is and should be.
Well done.
The Machinist / Machine may have helped a little bit.😎.
Thanks for sharing.
Happy Memorial day.
Take care, Ed.
Thanks again, Ed. I know I sound like a broken record, but she runs and starts so well! Punching above its weight!
What bolt kit did you use on that engine?
The mains and heads got arp bolts. The 508 was the same except it got Manley head bolts with the Indy head kit. I think he bought an alloyboltz kit for the other stuff:
@@JustMoparJoe ah, yeah was meaning like intake/water pump bolts.. i see some priced crazy high and was just curious.. pulled the poly out of my 62 last night, getting the LA 318 ready to go in.. quick rattle can rebuild to get the bar mobile then gonna look for a 360 block for a stroker :) thanks for the videos!
Your alot better with your budget build than i'm doing on mine. I've got 2k in the pistons alone. Once done my hp will be a bit higher than yours but my guess is your is just as much fun.
Thanks Mike! I hope to have one of the fastest of the slow cars someday
There are still some good deals out there if you take time to find them. Looks like you saved quite a bit vs buying from the retailers
Thanks brother. I appreciate the support!
Thanks Joe
Thanks for the support!
Thanks for the parts brake down. Very helpful.
Thanks John! Gotta save where you can. Especially with mopar tax
Thanks for the break down joe. Everything is so high so you have to shop around. Good luck on your test hits at the track.
Thanks Jeff! I’ll get some testing and will have a fun day of Racing coming up!
Dear Mopar Joe, sorry for the English mistakes I'm using Google translate. I've been following the entire construction of the 508 very carefully, my goal is to build a low deck 500 or 512 street/strip using E85 fuel. But I can't go wrong, because in addition to the cost of import taxes and shipping being very high, making an exchange would double the costs, making it much higher than buying a new part. I'm unsure about a short piston with a long connecting rod or a taller piston with a shorter connecting rod (4,150 stroke/6,760 rods) or (4,250 stroke/6,535 rods)? The values of balanced rotating assemblies are very close (440 Source, Scat, Molnar or Eagle, between U$D 2.8K and U$D 3.2K (512 from 440source with all upgrades). Here in Brazil the E85 fuel has at every post in the country.Did you have any reason not to beef up the underside with billet steel main caps and main stud girdles. Best Regards.
Thank you for sharing. Many mopar guys agree that the bottom end of the blocks are very strong and won’t need the girdle. This one is a street stroker, that will see some street race and bracket racing, occasionally. As for the short be. Long rod, I’ve always heard the longer rod is better for the race track. I don’t think you’d ever see a difference in either purchase, on a time slip. There’s no replacement for displacement. Hopefully this helps, and good luck with your project.
That's a nice heads up man thanks!
Thanks brother! I hope your t shirt and stuff made it to you!
@@JustMoparJoe yes sir I'm grateful for it I appreciate it a bunch mr.
Being Canadian, our dollar goes half as far as yours. That being said I am close to $6000 into my 440 with frugal shopping and doing my own work. Home ported 915 heads though, aluminum is $2500 plus here and will happen at a later date. Great video as always!
I hear ya man. Add 40-45% to those price that includes shipping for us Canucks
Thanks Greg. I know y’all have to eat a lot of cost because of the dollar, and the leadership. Hopefully both of ours improves soon!
Nice breakdown for us. Thx Joe 👍
Thanks brother!
Thank you Joe I'll be smiling all day😊
Thanks again, Shane! You know to give me a shout if you’re ever down my way!
you know me - I love transparency on cost
Good episode brother
Thanks Mike!
Thank you. I have been trying to get a close figure on doing the 440 in my 1972 Charger. Very nice information. I appreciate your detailed building. I want to make sure I don’t make any mistakes after putting 5 grand in it. I am not on any time schedule. I just want it done right.
Excellent! If you can wait and shop around, the deals are definitely out there.
Nice deal Joe.
Thanks John!
Joe do you know of a good set of X main bearings (full or 3/4 grooved) for a 440 block? I looked a while ago but had trouble finding a set.
Thanks brother! I would call Mancini and see what they have. I don’t know of any off hand, otherwise.
🏦💵💰💸great Job on your build . Now go get ‘em . It’s ⏳.
Thanks brother! Exciting stuff coming soon!
We double that plus a bit in Australia, the cost of parts and availability is out of control now, 383 chrysler KB pistons and moly rings has set me back $1230 for example and had to order them in, no stock.
thanks for sharing the info Joe
I’m sorry to hear that about your parts. I know patience definitely helps when gathering items. Good luck on your project!
Does your Stroker motor there make a lot more mechanical noise than the 400? I was told some stroker engines make a lot more noise than a stock motor especially at idle. I was told it's probably piston slap since the pins are not offset like Factory Pistons
It really doesn’t make much noise at all. It has a larger cam, but it also has much more cubes, that way that cam up. My kb pistons and the icon stroker pistons both have centered pins. Most aftermarkets do.
Vandervell is good bearings. You did a great cheap build. Anybody should be proud with 500+ horses in what should be a very reliable package.
Thank you! I will get a nice test in June at the track!
Thats awesome
Thanks for the support!
The "B" Street Dominator is long out of production, is that a "RB" you priced new?
Yes sir. You’re right as rain! Wait, are you the “Rodney Byrd” from the video? 🙌🏼
@@JustMoparJoe NO! That guy's a poser!! He doesn't even have a YT channel!!
