Im only here to say I just gave your last episode of the competitive 40k podcast a listen. When I first saw it I thought, Ok now Vanguard has run out of things to talk about and are doing another one about sportsmanship. But it was a great episode! Really glad I didn’t skip it. Keep up the good work!

I really liked this. I'm currently in the worst losing streak of my 40k career and need to try something new to avoid burnout 😂 my next game is in 2 weeks so going in my goals are as follows -
Non-negotiable: have fun and be the kind of opponent I want to play against.
Achievable: win the game and learn something new (rules or how to approach a new enemy army), finally end the streakof death
Stretch goal: know my own rules well enough to stop interupting the flow of play

I love the idea of the using your ambient time throughout your day to think about situations you might run into during a tournament (so you don’t use mental energy on it during the tournament). LSV (a magic the gathering pro) said that he’s always thinking about corner cases in the format that he’s practicing for. This way he doesn’t have to use mental energy on solving the problem during the tournament, he can then use his energy on other things.

Much like in magic we’re playing a game of small edges, where we are doing things to add small percentages towards us winning (which compound). Putting these situations in your subconscious (by #PuttingTimeIn) adds to your win percentage. It doesn’t guarantee you’ll win, but it increases your odds

This is exactly what I do for d&d
I send my idle time "walking around" in the world, thinking about what the characters could do next, and what those consequences could be.
So during session I can pull it out if the circumstance arises and focus on the number crunching and other things

I’m going to my first tournament next weekend and found this really helpful to get into the right mindset.
Non negotiable: play all 5 games
Achievable: try to make a friend in every game and be a great opponent for each of my games.
    Stretch goal: win one game!

Non-Negotiable: Be the best opponent I can be (try my hardest to be a player that I’d want to play)
Achievable: Fully utilize judges and not feel afraid to call them when there is a dispute (as opposed to giving in and allowing my opponent to do things). Related, not be afraid to call my opponent on things when I believe they are doing things that are against the rules.
Stretch Goal: Play a clean and quick game. Know my rules to the point where I don’t need to look at my army rules.

I've got my first Combat Patrol tournament at my local store this weekend.
Non Negotiable: Have fun, chat with other players.
    Achievable: Don't come last
Stretch Goal: Win one of the three games.
I did my first 1500k tournament last month at my local store and was bricking it going to it (I didn't book my ticket till the last day as I was worried I wasn't good enough having only played a year), so your comments were so on point. I thought as long as I didn't come last, it would be a success (I somehow came third!)

Absolutely brilliant video with some great ideas. Definitely started looking at my primary and secondary scores and have changed my list (reducing firepower) to make it easier to get points and/or have more trading units to achieve them.
I've used other lists to compare to mine to check I'm happy with the choices I have made but great idea to take random other army lists and consider what fixed/tactical objectives I would pick and how I would deploy.
My current issue is getting more games in so my objectives will be:
Non negotiable: Get one game in a fortnight rising to one per week by Easter.
Achievable Goal: Get primary points scoring above 35 and and secondary points scoring above 25.
Stetch Goal: Attend a 1 day event, and complete the main goal in every game.

I think one thing I noticed from my MTG days was just embracing people, you can't play the game unless you have an opponent. So respecting your opponent and having fun to me became paramount. Talking to people between games about what they enjoy about the new set or edition, what they are looking forward to. Talking strats, enjoying the people and stuff around the games themselves can really turn a LGS into a sanctuary.

      1) Non-negotiable: get back into the tournament scene. Just show up!
      2) Achievable: do at least a little hobby everyday. Chip away at the backlog even if it’s only 5 minutes.
      3) Play a full 5 rounds every game (even casual) within 2:30 hours on my clock (stretch stretch goal: under 2)

Chaos marine question. Undivided legions pay homage to all 4 chaos gods equally. Yet if you choose a heretic daemon prince it must have ONE of the dark gods mark thus making that army loyal to one of the 4 chaos gods. In fact if any of your HQ have a mark of any of the 4 gods you run into the same issue according to GW Undivided chaos. So how can you have undivided legions such as word bearers black legion alpha legion night lords with any HQ mark unless undivided?

Non Negotiable: Just stay positive in the face of adversity and play a great game.
Achievable: Every turn take a brief step back and evaluate what needs to change with my game plan to make the next best move. Don't get tunnel vision on what my previous plan was and learn to adapt.
Stretch Goal: Optimize my use of Character in my army and be proficient with every play style my army is capable of before the end of the year.

Relating to your achievable goal, I’ve been using that step back to drink water. I find that during a tournament I completely forget to eat or drink water (which makes me fatigue way faster ). I love this goal 🙂 we tend to get lost in our game plan & specifics (trees rather than the forests) and miss things (e.g. grots on a point behind a building). It’s just hard to self tigger at the end of each turn.

nah honestly age of sigmar seems to be much easier, as I looked at all the guides and all I see is that to start playing it you need to have 4000 points to change things that will suddenly get nerfed, what a shame... I was thinking of starting to play wh40 slowly on tyranids or black templars but now I don't know :(

Played 10th against a DG player without his codex, because GW is too greedy to release all codexs at the same time. He was uber mad because I went and completly destroyed him with any rule I have in my codex. Didn't shake his hand, told him to suck it. Good game.

I'm still amused that there's a competitive scene for 40K considering at its core the system is a horrible wargame. Any game where so much rests on the result of who gets to go first... is a bad game. Any wargame system that requires you to fill up the entirety of the map with line of sight blocking terrain as a band-aid to counter that failing? That's a bad game. It's like pretending to play a World War 2 game where the only way the system works is if you only fight in Stalingrad.
