Hello all, we have added a link to Greg's profile and key commands in the description. You can also find it here: www.steinberg.net/download_greg_ondo_profile_and_key_commands
Very useful tip Greg! What would be really great would be if you could take all of the cool presets and macros you created and have them show up in new versions of Cubase. Maybe under something like "Greg's Macros", "Greg's Presets", "Greg's Templates" etc.
HI, You’ll find Greg’s profile and key commands used in this video as a free download here: www.steinberg.net/download_greg_ondo_profile_and_key_commands
For Cubase 11 the command names are: Transport - Locators to Selection \ Edit - Split Range \ Tool - Object Selection Tool \ Transport - Go to Left Locator \ Edit - Auto Select Events under Cursor \ Transport - Nudge +1 Frame \ Audio - Decrement Event Volume \ Tool - Range Selection Tool
I did pretty much exactly this several months back for editing breaths in audiobooks. You get hundreds to deal with in there, so a macro is vital. However, I also added pre-roll on and off so that when the macro had lowered the breath, it wound back the duration of the pre-roll and went into play. It also turned use pre-roll back off since on that kind of editing, having pre-roll on is a pain,
Thank you Greg, I now use this very useful macro. Just one question : would you advise to add crossfades at the beginning and in the end of that new event?
Adding a keyboard shortcut was a pain in the tush. Took me a while to figure why the macro wasn't working - my key shortcut selection was already taken. Every key combo I could think of that made sense was already assigned. Grrrrrr!
Can you glue all parts together after splitting like that? Say you wanted to warp the vocals afterwards. It might be better to use the internal volume curve on the event?
wouldn't be easier, as I do since years, to key command the gain offline processing, that opens each time with the same amount of db like -5 db or whatever you set, and select + command? I've set ALT-G for Gain offline process, than I select the breathe, and then ALT-G.
HI, Preferences > Editing > Tools > remove the tick from the box that says: Pop-up toolbox on Right click. You can also right click + ctrl (cmd on Mac) and it will show the menu.
Thanks for the lessons. On some other videos that feature Cubase, I've seen small tags that might say "Chorus" or 'verse" on the tracks. How is this done?
I cannot get this macro to work in Cubase 10 Pro 10.0.10. It seems that the Key Command "Decrement Event Volume" no longer works in this version of Cubase. Even if you directly assign a key to "Decrement Event Volume" (just to test if that command actually works) and then manually make a selection and use the keypress - that command does nothing at all. You can still grab the top of the selection and pull the volume down manually - but this is more effort and unwanted in a workflow. The original macro was fine ! Is there another way to achieve this - or is it a bug to be fixed one day....?
i have created some simple macros.. but had no idea we could do such things as inc/dec 1dB. though, i wish and hope one day, the logic editor will introduce very simple programming functions as IF, FOR, WHILE, THEN, DO, + variables, + counting things (eg, count how many events are selected), + action permute, + track count/access, + a few extra options. with such new options, we could, among millions of actions, do : - get midi track pos/number | highlight midi track number 3 | select notes out of scale Maj7 | delete notes.... or Go to audio track #7 | select areas above xx dBs | apply plugin Id27 preset id6 | create 8 slices from selection | randomize/permutate slices position | set color #cc00aa to selection 1-3-5-7 | rename selection 2-4-6-8 name+ highest used frequency | select 3 random slices from slices 1-8 copy to audio track #7 between events 14 and 15 | ..... i mean, these are some dumb examples, but being able to count, random, permutate, +a few other options, inside the logic editor, many users could come up with incredible new macros, to move, randomize, multi select, etc etc etc.
kewl macro !!! but you don't HAVE TO know the entire name for a command. If you type in e.g. "left locator" every item with left locator in the name will come up as a hit if you keep clicking the button to the right of the search i.e. both "go to left locator" and "left locator to cursor" will appear as search results. If you just remeber one word in some weird command you might find it with a little luck.
Thanks Greg for the macro. i was not aware that macro was working like that (i mainly use logical editor for doing something) but it's not the same thing and purpose. an approach to the macros like photoshop do it would i think be better. hitting a record button, and it record all the action made by the mouse instead of here searching the shorcuts. almost everything i do in cubase, i don't know the name of the shortcut or where it is. i received recently several CMC series, and to program which shorcut it must use, i spend a long time searching them. so for the macros, it would maybe be a good idea to tell to the dev team that a recording mouse action could be a nice / better idea for the same result, just more "user friendly" ;). Thanks for your videos series by the way ! all of them are very interesting and instructive !
Good video as alwaysa! You could search the comands by typing in the shortcuts on the righjt side and the jump to it's place in the list (f.ex. with "p" this would be muchj faster). I do these things in the sample ediitor. But it's the same. In the end of the video: why don't you use zooming: ctrl + mouse wheel... or G and H ??? (I know what you think about me: this guy knows always something better - and you're RIGHT (,'.-) Please forgive me! )
Thanks for mentioning that point. Not all of the functions have a existing shortcut. I also wanted to have the full names for the function entered so that it might be easier create the macro for the viewer.
I see no real advantage over the method I use for 17 years+ (if that was possible in Nuendo 1.x, already. Can't remember...). Select (breath-) range and hit Key command for Gain ( set to minus x dB ). Please, fill me in what I am missing... For the lazy B's.. there is also Waves DeBreath, if that works ok.
I'm not sure, but i think this video is more to show the macro feature working than really a quicker solution to minimise breath ;) (what you do is great and perfect too !). until now, i was used to use the split option and mute the noise, instead of doing that (yeah, shame on me ;) ).
Many would find this quicker as it is select the range and trigger the macro with a key command. It saves a step of setting a value for the gain. While the mothod you describe works as well cutting out steps on a process that some people do thousands of times a day can really speed up work flow.
The issue I see is rarely do I reduce the breath by the same amount. Sometimes you want different amounts of reduction which I think would involve multiple breath reduction macros.
Answer to some of the replies... The problem with multiple gain reduction settings (the macro's & mine ) is that it all depends on the singer, the level of the recording and the applied compression, e.g. So, I figured that adjusting the gain reduction will be necessary, anyhow, in a number of tweaks. But, yeah, when you can do with a few macros of different settings you are good with it. No problem. Yet, if you accidentally choose the wrong macro, you have to undo and apply anew. Hey, what ever works best... and, finally, often enough none of this works and a cut/crossfade is necessary, anyhow...
I wish cubase had a real macro programming language... doesn’t have to be fully flegded, just the possibility to call functions, if/else and for loops and simple value input fields with variable assignment.
Thank you Greg very powerful tools that enhance our productivity in Cubase
Thank you for this macro! :-)
One of my favorite tips. Thanks for helping Cubase users Greg.
thank you so much. Very useful
Great solution!

I love macro's, Cubase is great. Thanks Greg
Excellent video Greg ! One of these days I'll go through the zillions of key commands, which would be the first step in dreaming up useful macros. :-)
Super! Thank you. Exciting to see this!
excellent macro! thanx!
Fantastic tutorial! I find it somewhat frustrating trying to remember all the different terms, without which, writing a macro would be very difficult!
FYI In Cubase 11.02 some of the key command names have changed.
Excellent!

You and Greg are my saviours! I'm editing an audiobook too, and the breaths, f's, v's and etc. are killing me. This is awesome.
bless you Greg, thank you so much;-)

Did you find out how to add crossfades ?

Great video. But what I do is just use the key command 'split range'...then I can lower the volume of the split event as I please
Great Greg! Efficient and inspiring. :-)
Thanks, as a bassist I was inspired by BroomStick Bass.
You're so kind, Greg! :-)
Good tutorial Greg
wow... Now that is cool :). And I second that!, make a Greg's Macro set :D.
Key command select tool is not showing in cubase 11. Has it been renamed?
Awesome! Is there a way in the macro to then have it select all three new pieces and do a crossfade?
+1
Brilliant!!
Very helpfull thanks
Can you glue all parts together after splitting like that? Say you wanted to warp the vocals afterwards. It might be better to use the internal volume curve on the event?
A easy way to do that is just to do a render in place for the vocal part and choose create single part.
Thank you.
wouldn't be easier, as I do since years, to key command the gain offline processing, that opens each time with the same amount of db like -5 db or whatever you set, and select + command?
I've set ALT-G for Gain offline process, than I select the breathe, and then ALT-G.
very usefull thanks !
Thank you for this tutorial. By the way any news about Melodyne ARA implementation in Cubase?
Thanks!
How do i get a list menu when i right click like that (1:29) I can only get the rectangle :-(
HI, Preferences > Editing > Tools > remove the tick from the box that says: Pop-up toolbox on Right click. You can also right click + ctrl (cmd on Mac) and it will show the menu.
hello and thanks for the videos you publish, I'm very helpful. where can I find the link to download the macro? thank you
Thanks for the lessons. On some other videos that feature Cubase, I've seen small tags that might say "Chorus" or 'verse" on the tracks. How is this done?
It might be the arranger track.
i thought that was the marker track

Indeed, that is a fact. Does not work with Cubase 10.

You can also create logical and project logical editor presets which can be incorporated within a macro for added flexibility.

Thanks for mentioning that. I also typed in the full name to have a visual reference in the video to indicate the full name of the function.

Inceptor I would make three separate macros : less to greater gain reduction. I think it's still worth it.

I can not believe that someone disliked this video! :))))))))))
Igor Korzhov i would bet the 2 dislikes came from 2 Logic or Live users who dream of having such macro tools ... but dreaming is all they can do.
I sometimes get a dislike for a live Google hangout video before they even start. :)
that's probably "auto hater" function :)
Or... You could just get Waves De-breath for $29 when it's on sale and make your life even more easier.
