Working as a roadside technician, I’ve been out to a few of these with EGR faults, but most of the drivers use there mondeos only use them for short trips and nipping to Morrisons one day a week. Most of them that I go out to are usually immobiliser faults or flat batteries. Good cars really. 👍🏼

SEAT: seats can go all squeaky btw, interesting how it never happened to that car. Happened to mine (around 150k miles). Something rubs out under the seat, has to do with the metal rails. Had to take my car to a specialist and they "fixed it", but I saw some gunk down the seat - I don't even wish to know how they "fixed it". But yea, the proper fix? Buy new seats when this happens.
Its easy to "see", it just squeaks when you get in, get out, when you go over bumps. It can get quite annoying.
GLOVEBOX: sometimes it starts to open REALLY slow. if that happens, you can break it, do NOT force it open. you need to take out the box then and lubricate the soft-open thingie on the sides.
Phone holder: IF you have the model with the basic radio, the metal trim there can be used for magnetic phone holders. They work great and can hold biiig phones. If you have the CD model, then you can buy a CD phone holder (I use an iOttie one, works superb!).

    • @amblernectar
      @amblernectar 3 роки тому

The squeaking you can sort by just raising the seat slightly so it's not sat on the runners, or lift it up, and apply some lube then back down again. Just had to do mine as it was driving me nuts daily

I must admit my MkIV 1.6TDCI Econetic is one of the best cars I have ever owned. A 2011 estate with 190k and only three little faults despite a hard, unserviced life. Clutch slave cylinder leaks, so I shall just keep topping that up until the gearbox really has to come out, and worse, the turbo is disabled by the ECM due to a failed pressure sensor (£36 new replacement is sat in the shed waiting for a warm enough day for me to go out and fit it). That makes it very sluggish of course, but at a regular 75mpg on a run sat at 60 on cruise control I don't think I have ever owned a more economical motorway cruiser. Even on my usual mixed run 45mpg is the norm despite lots of high rev running when getting moving or finding a slight hill to compensate for having no turbo. The final fault is not really a fault as such, as a previous owner was a cheapskate, the battery fitted is not strong enough so the car has chosen to disable the stop-start system, no great loss really.
Perhaps best of all, not only are the seats hard wearing as you say, they are very comfortable indeed even on my low spec. It handles well on country lanes, has good all round visibility, the six speed gearbox is as smooth as the day it left the factory, decent load area in the estate so that 3 retrievers can laze around in there. Your comment about a non-car person would say "this is nice" is spot on, the exact words of my friend borrowing it when is similarly used & abused passat estate died.

    • @stevesmith7530
      @stevesmith7530 Рік тому +1

@@thenasadude6878 if you actually think about it, car engines are hugely over-specced these days. First car I owned was one in the "large family car" segment, a vauxhall cavalier with a 1.3l 82bhp engine, single barrel carb, no forced induction, and even today i'd be content driving it around, it was ancient when i got and kept pace well. There is no need for the larger powerful engines, the efficiency increases in smaller engines have been more than enough really, even with the increased loads placed on them, and the increased demands of emissions control etc.
A base level, 1.0l engine golf now gets over 100bhp, and is more than capable of keeping up with traffic and making a mockery of speed limits, capable of double all of them bar the motorway limit.

Hiya, have the 2L TDCI Auto Diesel.
Have had it since 2014 done 175,000km.
Have only had the belt and main pulley thing changed, a split in a hose sonewhere by the battery lol. Forgive me Solo Mama. Easy fix anyway.
Had the fuel line changed and the oil changed twice.
No heres the noise that will make you poor lads cringe.
I havent done anything for the last 50,000km. I havent had the money.
But im coming into some and want to give my poor car everything it needs. I onky have a small issue...downhill im doing 50km and will try to speed up on the open road, gear will shift down. To 3rd from 4th instead if going up and which point i take over manually. Is that a transmisson issue? Its not that regular. Its been like that for a couple of years. Now i live in the city and barely need to go over 50km unless im on the freeway and its flat as so no worries.
So please tell me everything you believe i should request to be done, to properly car for my car. Shes been so good to me and deserves so love lol.

Christ, what a lucky man! Here in Aus, we only have diesel Mondeos with that godawful Powershit gearbox, no manuals. While they last longer than the dry clutch ones in the smaller cars (Focus here), they are damn expensive to fix. I have one apart now that has only 200,000K on it, and no gears. Clutch is stuffed, springs and plastics trashed, and during normal operation, the worn clutch particles coat the magnetic sensors because people do not change the transmission oil and filter often enough. That is a proper strip and clean job. Time consuming and expensive. Pity we could not get the manual box behind the diesel engines. The front lower arm forward bushes also flog out and need changing. Good video though.

A few thoughts if I may:
Mk4 2.0TDCi 2007-2009 had EU4 engines. You can tell these by looking at the plastic top engine cover as the dipstick and oil filler cap share the same cutout in the plastic cover, whereas they're separated on the EU5 engine. Also if you have the Convers+ instruments with the colour display, these have proper mechanical gauges for fuel and engine temperature (replaced by digital gauges on the EU5). The front grilles are mesh effect like the older MK3s. Same basic block and stuff as shown here, but no fuel vaporiser in the exhaust to block up (DPF regens were done purely by altering engine parameters). Also these engines (and the 2.2TDCi after 2009) came with Durashift automatic gearboxes which are proper torque-converter type and generally very reliable. I don't believe any had the active front grille mechanism either to get smashed up. If you want a 2.0 diesel auto then these are the years you probably want to look at but you will pay for it in fuel economy and road tax (£320/year IIRC)
Mk4.5 diesels from 2010 had EU5 engines and these do have the vaporiser nozzles, active lower grille, etc. and both grilles are slatted. That's the car featured in this video. Ford also switched to the Poweshift dual-clutch gearbox and unless that's had regular documented oil and filter changes on the gearbox it can go expensively wrong when the clutch pack starts to disintegrate. You'll often find that Powershift equipped cars sell for less than manuals and there's no shortage of cars being advertised with gearbox faults. Thankfully the 2.2TDCi didn't use Powershift but retained the Durashift, and will actually be cheaper to tax (though not run) than the 2009 2.0 TDCi auto, though they're nowhere near as common.
Finally on all the PSA engines, a loud clacking or knocking noise at idle and low revs, especially from the timing belt end, can simply be a weak auxiliary belt tensioner which you'll see moving back and forth. Replacing this will quiet the engine for a while but the noise will eventually come back because the cause is a seized alternator pulley putting too much strain on the belt instead of allowing the rotor to freewheel. This can also damage the crank pulley if ignored.

Left car for two days , started and drove home without problem. Ive now lost faith in reliability , travel 60miles to work.

Few less ponies than the Focus ST due to the exhaust system. 220PS or 217BHP on the Mondeo. I have the Titanium X Sport and I would consider the Mk4 in this video a 4.5! The face-lift in 2010 lost the 2.5T for a 2.0 EcoBoost but more importantly lost the manual transmission in favour of PowerShift, so I opted for the 2009 TXS 2.5T

Got it towed to the garage. A complete new valve set, the cylinders were 100% O.K.
£2,200 for the rebuild. A sore one.
If any consolation, it drives better than ever, almost like new. Take Alan's advice and get it changed well before Ford's recommended 125k.

I had several of them. I still own all four generations in my little garage, I do almost all repairs on my own. All petrol. The best trouble-free engine in mk4 is 2.0 liter 107kw, same engine from mk3. I have over 400k km on clock on one mk3 with this engine, the only repair I did was cleaning egr. I change oil every 8k km. It still runs smoothly, the timing chain is still quiet, but I plan to change it soon just for case. Ford says the timing chain is recommended to control in 300k km. I guess Ford discontinued this engine in 2012 so you can still buy this engine in facelifted mk4.

    Hello , I have a 2014 2.0 TDCI , titanium,PSA engine,
Only has 64k miles. Done 10k faultless miles , then other night after 10miles lost power on the motorway at -7 , I was freezing. After 90 mins , the AA chap pulled up , jumped in the car, started it and all good until I stepped in car park, it would start but revving erratic and then stall. Left car for two days , started and drove home without problem. Ive now lost faith in reliability , travel 60miles to work.
Anyone have any ideas to fix ? No mechanical work done apart from changing battery in last 2k miles , car is well serviced. Thanks

    Has a 201 Mondeo mk4 with a 2.o TDCI and poweshift.
My challenge, however, lies in the back of the car, where it crbs around corners, and has changed shock absorbers without success.
On the lift I have tried to find the fault, but without success. Even with breakerbars I can not trigger the error, do you have an idea if the bet is swaybar bushings., Or - Thanks

First , I’d like to say , Monica , YOU ROCK ! 💕 . Love your water cannon antics . They’re always welcome just as you are ❤️ . Alan , although I’ll never see the Mondeo in the United States , I want to say that’s a pity . If there were a left hand drive version , I would so want to own one . Unfortunately diesel fuel,is expensive here since it’s not the common use fuel for automobiles , only heavier trucks ( lorries ) and tractor trailers for commerce . A diesel in a commuter car would absolutely be a blessing since the engines are generally more durable , if of course built well . Many are , except the ones that General Motors built in the early 1980’s for mid size cars which were nothing short of a gasoline ( petrol ) conversion . I so wish I could have one of these Mondeo ‘s with the six speed for everyday use . The only draw back would of course be I’ll probably rack up speeding tickets since I don’t like cruising in a lower gear . I make use of the lower power band in a higher gear of which the Diesel engine was made for . Maybe we do have good cars in the unites states , in some folks opinion but I’ll say with cars like the Mondeo , the British have what I consider , excellent commuter cars . Unfortunately , we in the US drive automatic transmission . While that’s not a bad thing , the average driver in a country in Europe and the British isle know that manual transmission is more controllable on roadways . Our problem is stop and go traffic and lack of patience . Manual transmission is not favorable under those circumstances . Yes , there is traffic in your country but we are just known for it here . Not much fun therefore neither is there enjoyment for driving manual transmission in our cities . If you were here , I’d challenge you to find an average person who still remembers or even knows how to drive manual transmission anymore . Anyone younger than I (58) either hasn’t driven manual in ions or never cared to learn . I’ll bet however that if the Mondeo were available in the US , there would be followers , to a degree . Just the smartness and simplicity of the Mondeo would prompt a second look from some people and possibly an interest . Too bad people here are so lazy and couldn’t fathom learning , much less driving manual transmission . Diesel fuel prices aside , a gasoline engine version could make it here , but again , it would have to be automatic transmission 😢. The closing of the video was epic . Oh Monica , dear girl , your lovely , fun , and a good sport . It would be a treat to be in your presence . Hey , you both are fun . Great channel ! Bang on ! ✌🏻

Hi Alan, thanks for all your great videos. My experience, Mondeo MK4 2.0 Ecoboost 2010 auto, between 53k and 70k miles I have had... Gearbox oil change £350, broken rear spring, failed throttle body, failed water filler bottle cap, rear trailing arm bushes, failed cruise control buttons, failed adaptive head light leveller (new head light £300-£500). Low battery warning is hyper sensitive and claims battery is flat all the time when it isn't. My rear pads seem to be lasting for ever but I guess I am gentle on the brakes. Gearbox is great apart from one massive issue, under certain circumstances there can be a long delay engaging 1st gear which is a complete nightmare pulling out of junctions as it catches you out when least expecting it. I so loved my 2001 Mk3 V6 Ghia X, the steering was just so sharp and precise and the MK4 is like steering a boat in comparison.

I even have a Thetford 365 porta loo between the front passenger seat and rear seats 😁
I'm looking to part ex it for a van to convert to a camper but not found anything in my budget to warrant losing this wonderful car.
I can backup what Alan said about coolant loss, had this car 3yr 1 month and never had to even top up the water, no drips, nothing.
Apart from general wear and tear, tires, brakes I've only had one annoying problem and that was water in the rear boot/seats area. It turned out the the water was getting in through the tailgate wire loom rubber covers on the back of the chassis and running down the inside and the seats soaking the water up. I fixed it by simply cleaning and siliconing the around rubber covers.

Got a used mk 4.5 estate in 2017, top trim 2.0 tdci 120kW with PowerShift.
At 110k km had the PowerShift replaced (it had trouble shifting and leaked oil) and have been happy with it since. Butter smooth. Sometimes it's slow at intersections especially if you move then brake then accelerate again (the Powershift struggles to understand what you want to do).
The rear right door sometimes is hard to open, I tried lubricating the retention arm and the hinges but the problem persists. The harder you force it the more resistance it poses.
Sometimes the DPF regen goes crazy and when idleing I see fuel consumption 3 times higher (2.4litres/h instead of 0.9) and blue smoke comes out from the underside of the car, both at the rear near the tailpipe and under the bonnet. This seems more common in the summer, but it may have to do with poor diesel quality. The Ford dealer/service is not sure what the issue might be, suggestion are welcome.
    Minor complaints are:
hard suspensions on potholes (sport version on 19 alloys), but on the motorway they are perfect
Minor rattle from inside the dashboard/glovebox at idle (i'd like it fixed but can't trace it, suggestions welcome)
Faint squeaking from rear wheels (only heard when the windows are down)
The interiors are very nice, got the brown leather seats with black piping, a nice place to be indeed and still gets compliments. "Calming" is true, have had a lot of friends and family quietly fall asleep on long trips. As the driver, I can say I get to destination fresh and rested no matter the distance.

You really helped me to identify loads of issues I would have otherwise missed and I got the price knocked down accordingly. Top lad! Do you do servicing for general public mate?

Also (last one I promise), for anyone randomly curious.. If you have the satnav version, to get a usb stick to work for music it needs to be 32GB or less and formatted in FAT32. Any larger and a different format won't work. The seals on the sills at the bottoms of the doors always disappear as well, which is just a crap design.

I have a Mondeo mk4 1.8TDCi 125hp 2007 (with chain) and no problems whatsoever. I would love to have the 2.5T i5 (hatchback) but they are almost non existent in my country :-(

Used to own an 09 plate 1.8 Zetec from new until I sold it in 2015 with 170k on the clock.
The belts were replaced at 97k. The wet belt was severely cracked and I was lucky it hadn't snapped.
The flywheel failed at 140k but the clutch was still ok when replaced.
Swing arm bushes lasted about 130k.
Apart from these wear and tear items nothing else failed.
The aircon was rubbish from new though but I believe all mk4's are poor .

Love watching your videos mate, great review of a great car, one thing about rust though, they do rust, eventually.... mine has spent all its life in the scottish highlands, we get harsh winters here and the salt is beginig to take its toll underneath now, looking a bit orange in places, nothing compared to what a sierra would have been like at the same age though

    I have a MK 4 2.00 sport. 74000 over ten years.
    Needed new petrol pump £1100.00
Air con bust needs new condenser £1200.00
    Rear door lock doesn’t work
Just had to clean out a non return valve on the front window washers due to being clogged with some sort of plastic gunk - easy fix
I’ve had half a dozen Mondeo’s. This is the worse one ever.

I have owned a ford mondeo mk4 titanium powershift gearbox 2012 for a year now. How good do I think it is? I'm more disappointed than happy! powershift is a bad gearbox with problems. This is nothing new that powershift is a bad gearbox!
Ford has cut corners to save money something you notice after a while.
It has poor sound insulation and makes a bit too much noise!!
    sharp treble in the stereo
This is no wv polo but a mondeo titanium and then you expect more from it!

Had my 2007 mondeo mk4 2.0 tdci stationwahon for 3 years now and it has rolled 175k miles. Really reliable car and I can fit anything in it.
Except for regular service I had to change wiring for front right ABS that rusted away, handbrake wire that rusted away, hosing to DPF that somehow disintegrated from i side, wheel bearings and MAF. And yeah the goddamn headlights reflector burned out. It was tricky but easy to restore.
Other than that the engine runs perfect and can pull a lot of weight.
Edit: the worst thing about this car is that the Swedish transport agency/government hates good reliable diesel cars and taxes the hell out of it :(

Useless fact, the Ford Probe used a Mazda V6 engine before Ford made their own V6 (The Duratec, first fitted to the Mk1 Mondeo).

I own a mk4 1.8 tdci. It has recently developed a warm start problem. After a 20 minutes or so drive if I stop the engine and try to start again it won't crank up at once. However, the cold start has been bang on.

Yes, they just bloody run forever. Mine is 2011, 215000km. Did rear bushes, the damn vaporisier, one turbo pipe, the little solenoid for the actuator turbo, and rebuild steering rack and that's it, all it needed since new, apart from usual service obviously. But in Romania, maybe we have way worse roads, but around 200k km mark, most of them take a dump with the steering rack which needs rebuilding. I'm surprised you don't have this issue with the taxis.

Mine is 2012 1.6 ecoboost. The only show stopping snag I had was a faulty low pressure fuel sensor. The snag was the Ford spares system claimed it did not exist. Had to source one elsewhere, epic fail for my local dealer there.

Hi Alan, do you know where the fuel temperature sensor will be on a ford transit courier 2018 1.5 tdci? as Ford says that they do not list one for it. Thank you!

I have a check engine light On, OBD scanner says it’s a EGR fault, it’s a Mondeo 2.0 duratorq tdci diesel, 2012 model.
Any ideas how to fix this?

hmmmm. here in norway it known for leaks at the injectors. the turbo problems P003A. EGR problems. The cover on top off the injectors desolve after leaks. The tail lamps crack.
