- 1st mov: Allegro con brio
Wilhelm Furtwangler leads the BPO in Beethoven's fifth symphony on May 4, 1954 at the Paris Opera. While not as well known as the wartime performance or the last recorded performance (5.23.54), I believe that this version is the best realisation of Furtwangler's overall conception of the score, despite the BPO being in less than perfect form.
Comments about politics will be removed.
absolutly not ! For Beethoven, Furtwangler is the undisputed master
Expressiveness, comunion with Beethoven reaches high altitude
the best perfomance
TY them from space for posting.A stunning performance as were most all that he conducted.
Bravissimo!!!!
Who is Karajan compared to Furtwängler?
At the beginning of Karajan's career he had no chance because in Berlin and in Vienna Furtwängler lead both most important orchestras!
And in his early recordings Karajan comes close to Furtwängler ...
I think Karajan didn't fullfill his talent completely. There Furtwängler was much better.
I was impressed with the sound quality of this recording. The clarity, definition, and full frequency aspects brought out the magic and profundity of Furtwangler. I'll leave it to others to criticize, rank, and compare.
Yes. I agree.
el maestro.
@viandante It's an old recording, technologie was not fantastique like solti's Ring. And it is not for the estetic we like his interpretation, it's because he played like nobody can. How he play it like a Horror movie just fantastic. Karajan changed the orchestrations because he was not the height. Understand Furtwangler is difficult but we have to :P
If you have a video of Furtwangler conducting this symphony that you want to offer up then do so and amaze me, but to my knowledge none exist.
This is a really good version, it's just a shame there's no video to go with it.
Pierre Monteux and Furtwangler are the best to capture of Beethoven 5th symphony message, in my opinion
Too damned slow! Karajan's and Kleiber's interpretations are so much better.
@cromulus BRavo! E' tutta un altra cosa. W, W, W, W, W KARAJAN
Do you really like it more than the 5/27/47 performance?
ES, EL MEJOR DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS
Humano, muito humano.
Sensational! Bravo! TY.
the best perfomance cahtellify
Even the surprising use of the "AGC" (Automatic Gain Control) cant hide the power and beauty of this historical gem.
The AGC was used in primitive cassette recorders but I didnt knew that it was being employed as late as 1954. In the 1930s (and to avoid overload distortion or clipping) some type of peak reduction techniques were common.
@ThePurpleHarpoon
In all likelihoods the early performances of this were under even scrappier orchestras. In the early 19th century this piece was considered difficult, today most orchestras can play it in their sleep.
grazie
@facundomaidana HERBERT VON KARAJAN
who can dislike that?
@zuckerkrank HERBERT VCON KARAJAN
Carlos Kleiber.
Furtwangler seems to have a very personal connection to this piece- I hear a great urgency, joy and energy here missing from other conductor's performances.
Bravo! qué orquestas y directores en aquellos tiempos!
"The mystery of the hollow fifth implied the tremendous unison first subject,
and the misty procession of fragments that is the second subject; and all these things
implied the mighty conflagration of the recapitulation - how meaningless the precise
articulation of the sextuplet seems in this searing sheet of flame!' that's Lang's characterisation for Furtwangler's performance!
thank you very much for this very rare historical document!
Stunning! The master speaks! Bravo! TY.
I am surprised by how much I like Furtwanglers version!
Nothing but perfect, makes me weep.
Ok, fine and original, but the ensemble problems are incredibly infantile and annoying. I don't understand this myth-making, there are many finer versions by less-feted conductors and orchestras.
It not the case of dislike this or that ,but once you have heard Toscanini performing the same work,than ask yourself again - who can dislike that ? Only deaf peoples ! I admire and respect Maestro Furtwangler's,but here he falls short ,
Neste caso, recomendo que escute a interpretação de Riccardo Chailly (2011).
