This is no beginner couse this is intermideate at best. The basic shape part is at beginner level, but him drawing the van freehand without guidelines is a great way to teach students bad habits jumping several steps. If a beginner does the same thing its gonna look like a van with downs syndrome 😂
This is all kinds of helpfull! Just tried to copy a campervan picture and it is like a flat box!🙄 so many helpful tips here, I shall be rubbing out my picture and starting again!
I want to say thanks for being so descriptive in your tutorial. I just started with urban sketching. I have painted plein air but never urban sketching. The video was great for a beginner like me. I never had much experience in drawing and sketching and it holds me back so much. I was able to understand what you were showing. Thanks so much for your time. The kids sounded so cute in background. I have birds screaming in mine lol. You have a great day with your family ❤
Right at the beginning, the instant you start freehanding those straight lines IN PEN, without even a mark crilley type apology or nod to the 99% of people who can't do that, you're undoubtedly miffing a lot of folks. Once you get the perspectives in though, some of your shapes are off by a bit and it doesn't matter. You might want to point this out and emphasize that's because the basic perspectives and ultimate colouring are what makes the piece.
can ypu do a video on aerial perspective of cars and vehicles. This would be a helpful to stetch and paint cars on a street when we watch them from top example from higher floor of a building.
Cat driving the van was brilliant. Also, thank you for this! I've always had a hard time drawing cars and this helped! Now I just need to tackle buildings. I'm always lost on what details to include and what to do more suggestively so it doesn't look too cluttered
I recently bought a little 1970s Matchbox toy version of this and was thinking of sketching it. My all time favourite vehicle! This video has helped a lot. I sketched a Citreon van yesterday, and your tips would've really improved it. Especially about the tyres. Cheers, Scottie! 🎨
I have watched over 50 videos on how to draw a car , and at long last, I have found the best one here which explains how to get the correct perspective so well. I am really glad and thankful. I have came across many art teachers who paint well but have no idea how to explain things or they don’t have the patience to do it. U r one of those who can paint well n can explain the steps v clearly. I can’t wait to watch your other videos.
I use a uniball vision micro pen for black lines and a Pentel Water Brush pen for watercolor. It comes empty and you fill it with water. Check out description for details👍🏼
NICE SKETCH . Thanks for sharing your talent/gift . First time on your channel . Liked & Subscribed . God bless . Question: What is the PURPOSE of splashing (with the toothbrush) ?
Hi Scottie! I discovered your sketches today and I`m thrilled. I really like your way of drawing, it`s very helpful to enhance my simple sketches. My son drives an old Van and I`m looking forward to gifting him a painted Van very soon . He is now in vacation in Ireland on a roadtrip. Thanks Scottie and many greetings from Germany.
I just saw your channel, and i love it!! I'm industrial designer but it's been so long since I don't sketch. You make me want to draw again, just for fun... Specially becouse watercolours Is muy favorite technique. Can I ask you what type of paper do you use? Saludos desde Argentina!!!!
Thanks Emilia! That's great to meet a fellow industrial designer👍🏼. I use Stillman & Birn Beta series sketchbook. It's 270gsm so it's good for watercolor and comes in many sizes. There are better sketchbook brands for watecolor but they are slightly more expensive and usually have 100% cotton paper but I am only doing a light wash so it is very good.
Thank you for this video. I am very bad in sketching, so I am very thankful for something for beginners. I think to sketch people is to advanced for me, so I was happy about this explanation to sketch a car. Please more about simple sketchings. Greetings from Germany
thanks Ron! Scott Robertson has some great books for drawing vehicles in perspective. also check out Stephen travers on UA-cam for architecture tutorials on perspective.
One way of finding the horizon line on a subject is to find a line or a series of points on the subject that is perfectly horizontal. Eg if the bottom of all the wheels are in line horizontally, then the horizon line is at ground level (where the photo was taken). If the roof is perfectly horizontal, the photo was taken at that height. Hope that makes sense Ally
Those “pesky tires”!!! New Subscriber and this post made my day! Working on a current drawing and the back tire has been haunting me for days. 😖🛞 Glad I found your channel.

Best thing about your teaching is even though you are quite advanced artist...you know how to drop down to basics for a beginner 😊
Thanks Sujanith🙌🏼

@@warlorddk2070 That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. It's supposed to be a loose sketch. 🙄
I think you should make more videos to sketch vintage cars
Good suggestion!

Clearly explained, just starting loose urban sketching and this is so helpful for vehicles. Thank you for breaking it down that is understandable.

Thanks so much for the kind words! That is very encouraging🙏🏼🙏🏼
I always drew banged up cars because the body panels could be pointed any direction because I sucked at perspective 😅
Interesting compromise
What type of pen do you use? And did you empty what was inside it before using the other color, thank you

This is the exact VW Camper my dad has driven for years since I was a child. He’s 80 now and his van still sits outside my home in London.
That's amazing he had a similar van!
Bravo. Simple, but geometrically accurate. Thanks!

@@SketchingScottie Thanks.
How would I determine the horizon line for a object in a photo if I don't know the angle the photo is taken like the van photo?
