Anyone notice that a good portion of these books have red or orange book covers?
    Thoughts on that?

I was looking for banned books list and so many lists had things like Harry Potter and Gender Queer. They were fake lists basically. This video has the real deal

Thanks! I did throw a couple on there (like doctor Seuss), but I really wanted it to be real banned books, not a silly list!

I did not know green eggs and ham was banned in China once. I remember that book as a child.

Weird, isn't it? It seems like a simple children's book, but not but everyone!

Mein Kampf is not an easy read, particularly because he wasn't a great writer. I remember trying to read it as a teen just to have the background knowledge but just couldn't.

American Psycho is satire but to a point where I found it unreadable.

Good to know. Do you know what version you read? I haven't picked a translation.
I wonder if I won't feel the same way....I do have a feeling I'll read a bit and then put it down and read a plot summary instead.

@@MatthewSchaefer This would have been over twenty years ago, so I don't know. If I still had access to my library account from that time I might be able to pull that data, but I don't.

@@KathyTrithardt hello Kathy! since Adolf Hitler did not write a novel, maybe its not that important how good his style was but he definetly made up his mind about politics, 1.ww. and other issues which were current at that time. By the way - his friend and prison mate Rudolf Hess helped him writing the book and finally an old comrade double checked it once more. I don't know about the translation but the original is an highly interesting read ... maybe thats why it is not only in germany still not allowed to offer Mein Kampf (except the hard cover - annotated edition which is huge, boring and unaffortable)

@@MatthewSchaefer I got a copy of the "Manheim" translation back in the 90s when you could buy it in the history section of any bookstore. Now it is very hard to find 🙄

Great list my friend! May I recommend "The Plot: The Secret Story of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion" by Will Eisner.
It changed my perspective more than any book I've ever read. It's a graphic novel but don't let that throw you off (after all Eisner invented the graphic novel)

I do love Eisner (and graphic novels!). I'll definitely add it to my list. Thanks

      I read it.... And I didn't love it...🤷‍♂️
I'm thinking about making a video about why though.
Why do you love it so much?

Good list, though... id say the most disturbing thing i ever came across was The Turner Diaries... i don't know if Amazon would have a listing for that - truth is even in the USA I'm still afraid to even search bar it to check

if you really like brave new world and 1984 you should definitely read "amusing ourselves to death" by neil postmann its an amazing book,he uses those two books as reference to the world we're living in and it was written in 1984!

I don’t think “things fall apart” is controversial because it is one of the main books that started the writing back canon on post-colonialism ...it was banned b/c of colonizing countries trying to quiet any negative depictions of colonialism. I personally wouldn’t categorize it as controversial, especially as a similarity with some of the other books in this video, b/c it is an important book that shouldn’t have a pre-text negative connotations regarding it’s message. It is just a thought to have in mind.

    • @MatthewSchaefer
      @MatthewSchaefer  3 роки тому

Thanks for the conment, you are definitely right.
There are a couple of other books that's aren't currently considered controversial (green eggs and ham and brave new world, for instance), but you are definitely right that we should go into a book like Things Fall Apart with an initial negative bias. It certainly isn't Mein Kampf.
Thanks for the comment, and the clarification!
